Vibe of the Tribe is the fourth episode of Survivor 42.
Story[]
Night 7[]
Vati returns to camp, rattled from a chaotic Tribal Council that ended in Jenny Kim's elimination by consensus. Daniel Strunk wants to debrief in the morning, but Chanelle Howell plans to explain herself before the tribe goes to bed. Daniel claims that Chanelle blindsided him, and she retaliates by revealing that Daniel had told her about Mike Turner's Beware Advantage, upsetting Mike even further. Hai Giang comments that everyone was blindsided, but that Daniel caving at the rock draw allowed him to flip the numbers in his favor. In the fallout, Hai reaches out to a burned Mike with the offer of an alliance between themselves and Lydia Meredith, which would allow them to control the five-person tribe. Mike accepts Hai's deal.
Daniel |
“ | Tribal Council was a disaster, I would say, for me. I made the decision to trust Chanelle as my number-one alliance member and the trust wasn't really reciprocated. When it came time to potentially go to rocks, we needed to convince Hai to vote for Lydia; she didn't really have my back and I feel like I've just totally, totally screwed everything up. | ” |
Chanelle |
“ | Tonight at Tribal, Daniel threw me under the bus, saying 'Chanelle blindsided me and backstabbed me', which I was a little confused about because I didn't do anything to change the plan. Was it my idea to get Lydia out? Meh, sure. But I can't admit to that because then that would ruin my game. | ” |
Hai |
“ | Not only was Jenny blindsided, Mike was blindsided, Chanelle and Daniel were both blindsided, because they thought I was voting the way they told me. Everyone at our Tribal was blindsided. Daniel was so assertive in the fact that we could not go to rocks. This man is a lawyer, he can talk circles around us, but at that point, I knew I could shift the game in my favor. Daniel folded like a ton of bricks. That man has literally no backbone, none! | ” |
Mike |
“ | Daniel absolutely lost my trust. He was going behind my back, making other little alliances, and telling secrets I told them. But you know what, that's in the past, what I need to do is move forward. I gotta adapt. Either I adapt, or I'm a dinosaur. I'm in survival mode now. There ain't no kumbaya. The 'k' left, the 'kumbaya', the 'umba', everything left, there is no 'kumbaya' tonight. Holy crap-baya, that's what it's all about right now. | ” |
Daniel and Mike go off to talk, and Daniel explains that he intended to work with Chanelle, which caused him to go back on his alliance with Mike. Daniel apologizes for lying to Mike and regrets putting trust in Chanelle, saying this could be a game-ending mistake while commenting that Chanelle has not received any backlash for her duplicity.
Daniel |
“ | Once the votes were revealed, it exposed that I was playing both sides, but it seems to me that Chanelle has somehow gotten off scot-free with her playing both sides. She's getting no blowback from this as far as I can tell. That's crazy to me! This game is totally fickle—it can turn on a dime, which is what I'm hoping it does again, because I'm in a world of hurt and I need a dime to turn. | ” |
Day 8[]
The tribes head in for the Reward Challenge, where Ika and Taku learn that Jenny was the first member voted out of Vati. Maryanne Oketch is shocked. Jeff Probst then introduces the mechanics of the challenge: Tangled Up Sled Slide. Only the first tribe to finish the challenge will win the reward of ten fish. Ika sits out Rocksroy Bailey and Vati sits out Chanelle, then the tribes get to the challenge.
Jonathan Young leads Taku in an organized choreography to untangle their ropes, giving his tribe an early lead. Ika struggles at the first obstacle, and Rocksroy shouts advice from the sit-out bench. Maryanne encourages Taku by listing fish dishes they can make with their reward. Taku gets to the lasso first while Ika and Vati continue to lag behind. All four members of Taku quickly land their balls in their basket and win reward. Swati Goel is bewildered by Taku's efficiency, and Drea Wheeler comments that Jonathan led the challenge for them.
After the challenge, Jeff praises Taku for their unity, and Jonathan agrees, stating that Taku has made themselves a "solid four". Tori Meehan calls Jonathan a "Goliath" and calls back to the previous challenge where Jeff commended Jonathan for one of the best challenge performances he had ever seen. Tori admits that Ika needs to look within themselves to find where they click. Jeff congratulates Taku on their way out and sends Ika and Vati back to camp empty-handed.
Hai |
“ | I thought we would do a lot better than we did, but wow, Taku really just blew us out of the water. They have Thor, he is insane and they are the top-performing tribe now, so we need to pull it together. | ” |
Taku returns to camp and see their reward. They are surprised at the size of the fish. Lindsay Dolashewich says she wants to try a fish eye. She comments that food is a big deal in this game and sees Jonathan as a massive challenge asset that helps them get the sustenance they need. Jonathan is annoyed that he made the off-hand remark about Taku's unity after winning the challenge, and Maryanne chides him for the impulsive comment. Maryanne and Omar walk off to collect wood, and Maryanne is still chagrined by the faux pas. Omar agrees, but concedes that Jonathan is indispensable even if he may be clumsy with his words.
Maryanne |
“ | Jeff undersold the fish, man. After winning the reward, we walk into camp and see ten massive fish. We're like, yo! Jeff, you must be eating like a king to think these are 'decent-sized' fish. These are amazing! | ” |
Lindsay |
“ | As a tribe, we're killing it right now, like it's very obvious, like when we win, we blow out. And the fact that the other tribes struggled so much, it was clear, they're not eating. So we clearly have a huge advantage. Being able to have that much in that one sitting, who knows when we're gonna get that again? As long as we have Jonathan, we might have it again tomorrow, but… | ” |
Maryanne |
“ | So when we win the reward, Jeff asks Jonathan how our tribe was. And Jonathan basically said, (imitating Jonathan) 'Hey, we're a strong four, you can't break us apart!' So I'm just hitting my head being like, oh my goodness, yes, what you're saying is true, but you couldn't just be vague, please! | ” |
Omar |
“ | Jonathan, Mr Dummy Jonathan opens his big mouth about how we're such a tight family of four. So that was frustrating to see, that my main man is a bit of a slop! But, Jonathan is invaluable to the Taku tribe. | ” |
Jonathan expresses his annoyance with Tori calling him "Goliath". Lindsay tells him not to overthink, while Jonathan comments that he sees that he is a great shield. Lindsay believes everyone is also too hungry to get rid of Jonathan. Jonathan talks about his childhood and relationship with building strength. He is aware of his position in the game: the provider, and he intends to capitalize on this to advance him in the game.
Jonathan |
“ | I've been wanting to be on this show since I was 14. When I was young, and I was like 3, my dad used to wake me up and make me do pull-ups. And he would tell my brother and I to run up a mountain and race, and whoever lost had to do it three more times, so I have a foundation of strength since I was little. I know that what I can do is supply a service for my tribe. Everybody knows I'm big, so I need to use it. I want them to see that my service is that I'm using it for them. Whatever you need, that's my service. (laughs) | ” |
At Ika, Rocksroy is coaching Romeo Escobar on making a fire. Romeo is frustrated by Rocksroy's nagging, but goes along with him to placate him.
Romeo |
“ | Rocksroy is the oldest one in camp, so I feel like he wants to prove that he can do everything better than the rest of us. He's coaching me, but he's not really coaching me, but I'll let him feel like he's coaching me. I'm gonna do whatever I have to do to get to the end. Show montage: Rocksroy and Romeo in the woods. (imitating Rocksroy) 'Make a knot here.' 'Pick that one up.' Yeah, no problem, no problem, no problem, no problem! In my mind, I'm thinking, shut the hell up! But I can't do that here, you know, you have to keep your cool. | ” |
Swati and Tori strategize. They agree that Drea should be the next to go if they visit Tribal Council, but realize that they are in the minority because Drea is aligned with Rocksroy and Romeo, and has an Extra Vote in stow. In order to usurp power, Swati realizes that they have to pull in Rocksroy, but Tori is displeased by this given her lack of a working relationship with Rocksroy. Swati tells Tori that Drea has been gunning for Tori, and so Tori caves to Swati's suggestion. Even though she wanted to work with Drea, Tori realizes that working with Rocksroy is the best bet for her game.
Swati |
“ | At this point, I feel like I'm not in a power position on the tribe, and I wanna change that. So I have a plan in the works to vote out Drea. She has an Extra Vote, and thus holds a lot of power. But to do that, we need to pull in a third person. | ” |
Tori |
“ | I do trust Swati. Swati is my biggest ally, so if people actually do want me out, I've to do something. But what's hard is trying to deal with Rocksroy. His way is like the way, and is really frustrating Rocksroy displays these tendencies of, like, a narcissist. Like, unless an idea comes from him, it's not a good idea. And, I work with clients who are in relationships with narcissists, and sometimes the best advice is to, like, get out, really, if you can't. But, I wanna try with Rocksroy, I can't get out. And to get rid of Drea, we're gonna need Rocksroy. | ” |
Tori puts her pride aside and goes on a walk with Rocksroy, where he nags about camp work. Through her irritation, she bites her tongue. Rocksroy brings up Drea's summit and wonders if she received an advantage. Tori reveals that she has an Extra Vote, to his surprise. Tori then opens up the possibility of working with Rocksroy to blindside Drea with Swati. Rocksroy is resolute that he has not committed to any alliance, and plays along with Tori. However, he is suspicious that she is scrambling and cannot bring himself to trust her.
Rocksroy |
“ | Tori came to me and said, 'Drea has an Extra Vote.' Tori knows that she's on the bottom of the pecking order I believe, so her game is to try to bring myself and Swati in to try to make an alliance and the person that she wants to go after is Drea, for some reason. I don't know why, but it's not gonna happen, because in my gut, I just do not trust Tori. | ” |
Rocksroy goes to Drea and Swati, and divulges that Tori leaked information about Drea's Extra Vote to her. Drea appreciates Rocksroy's frankness. Drea is disappointed because she has done everything in her power to keep Tori informed, and she considers this a betrayal. Swati backs out of her alliance with Tori, not wanting to be associated with her.
Drea |
“ | I've been wanting to work with Tori, and I even wanted to do a girls' alliance, but when I found out that Tori told Rocksroy about the Extra Vote, it changed everything. | ” |
Swati |
“ | Oh my God, Tori shared more information than she should have and got busted. And now, I have to step back and reassess before I get myself in trouble. And as far as Tori, as much as I would like to work with her, I'm not going to go down with her. | ” |
Day 9[]
The tribes arrive at the Immunity Challenge. Daniel comments on the rainy brutality of the past nine days, and says that he is only alive because of Hai's body heat. Maryanne agrees that the downpour has taken a toll, before proceeding to say her activation phrase again. To her silent exasperation, nobody responds.
Maryanne |
“ | I masterfully say my phrase and I hear nothing. Are you kidding me? You're telling me, I am the only one who found an idol? Dude! What are the other tribes doing? I'm just thinking that they're just sitting down, like, twiddling their thumbs. I'm so disappointed, because I don't have a vote because none of y'all wanna go out and look for an idol! Do better, y'all! | ” |
Jeff takes the Immunity Idols back from Ika and Taku, then explains the challenge: Beyond the Tuna. Ika sits Romeo out and Vati sits Daniel out. The tribes strategize and proceed with the challenge.
Swati and Tori will swim for Ika, Hai and Mike for Vati, and Jonathan and Maryanne for Taku. Each pair swims to pull their tribe's boats to the tower, and Jonathan's powerful strokes allow Taku to earn an early lead once again. Lindsay leaps off and grabs her key. At the Ika tower, Drea makes quick work as well. Lydia, however, is unable to make the leap and falls back empty-handed. Omar then grabs his key on his first try, but loses it and has to swim out to retrieve it. Chanelle then grabs Vati's first key successfully. Rocksroy gets Ika's second key. Then, Omar makes it back to the boat with Taku's second key. Jonathan single-handedly powers Taku to the puzzle stage. Meanwhile, Vati is set back as Lydia falters again, while Daniel cheers Vati on from the sit-out bench. As Omar unlocks Taku's puzzle, Ika makes it to the puzzle stage. Chanelle makes the second jump for Vati and grabs their second key. Vati swims quickly, trying to break from dead last. When they reach the puzzle, Hai and Mike collapse in exhaustion. Mike says that he loves Hai, and cannot believe they just completed that swim. In a calm, systematic operation, Omar and Maryanne make quick work of the fish puzzle for Taku. Drea and Swati extend the lead for Ika, while Hai offers advice for Chanelle and Lydia. However, Ika starts to face a roadblock, allowing Vati to catch up. Taku wins their third consecutive challenge as Drea drops part of Ika's fish, opening the door for Vati. In a narrow finish, Vati ekes out Ika to win immunity by a margin of two pieces. Jeff sends Taku and Vati back with the Immunity Idols, before taking the flint from the losing Ika tribe. Tori expresses her nervousness at being the target once again at Tribal Council.
Tori |
“ | I kinda wanted to come in and be the sweet girl, play a little under the radar. Did not expect, for the first two Tribals, to be on the chopping block and be the center of conversation. So I'm having to fight and wiggle my way out of it, but if I'm feeling insecure, I can play my Shot in the Dark tonight. | ” |
Ika returns to camp and starts their fire. Romeo is relieved that there is an ember left burning. A dejected Rocksroy is frustrated at the tribe's losing streak, but takes comfort in having a "safe" vote in Tori.
Rocksroy |
“ | We lost today, again, I just- I just, my head just wants to, just… Why?! We're a disaster! The only positive thing is that Tribal should be very simple tonight. We need to eliminate threats, and the biggest threat is Tori. She can't keep a secret, and she can't be trusted. So she's going home tonight. | ” |
Romeo has a conversation with Tori, bringing up that he is aware she wanted to align with Rocksroy and Swati. Tori explains that she acted on Swati's information that Drea, Rocksroy, Romeo, and Swati were aligned against her. Romeo is alarmed that Swati divulged their alliance to Tori. He realizes that Swati is more duplicitous than her youthful innocence lets on.
Romeo |
“ | What the hell! The four of us had decided it was going to be Tori next, and now I come to find out Swati told her 'bout it. Why would you do that? | ” |
Romeo |
“ | Everyone likes Swati, she's this innocent 20-year-old. You think she's just out here for self-discovery, she's scared, and then you realize… wait a minute, she's playing, and she's playing hard. | ” |
Romeo sits with Drea, saying that Swati has been playing both sides. Romeo says that Swati has pledged to be his number-one; Drea compares notes and learns that Swati has been double dealing, making the same promise to each of them. Drea and Romeo realize Swati has probably made the same promise with Rocksroy and Tori as well, and is probably trying to divide the Ika tribe. Tori confirms this with Drea and Romeo, saying that Swati had planted the seed for Tori to go against Drea. The three agree that Swati is the biggest threat on the tribe. Tori rejoices in learning that there is hope for her yet.
Drea |
“ | From the beginning, I felt that Swati was someone I can trust, but now it comes out, she's playing all of us against each other, and I just find that too much of a threat, she's too good in her social game. | ” |
Tori |
“ | I had this game plan, and Swati was very much a part of it. But now, it's looking like Romeo and Drea want to work with me, of all people, to get out Swati, which is a great step up from the bottom, and if that's what I have to do to stay in the game, I'll do it. | ” |
Swati sees Drea and Tori having a private conversation, and is flustered when she is stonewalled by Romeo. Swati goes off to talk to Drea to save herself, asking Drea what Tori has done to drive a wedge between their relationship. Swati wants to affirm her loyalty with Drea, but Drea does not know who to trust. Before leaving for Tribal Council, she talks with Rocksroy and Romeo; Rocksroy says he is sticking with the Tori plan, but Drea and Romeo remain undecided between Swati and Tori.
Swati |
“ | Tori and Drea just had a long conversation and if Tori let out I was trying to blindside Drea, I could be in trouble. So, I thought I'd do everything I can to make sure I'm not going home. | ” |
Drea |
“ | There's a lot of he said, she said, and I'm trying to calculate it in my head, who's telling the truth and who's not telling the truth. My gut's always been weird with Tori, and it sucks 'cause everything I think that Tori and I are on the same page, she does something sneaky and deceitful. Then again, I don't know if I can trust Swati either. And it's just like, what do I do? This is pissing me off. If it was my job and people were messing with my million dollar deal, I'd cut them out of my business, but I can only get rid of one of them. And if I make the wrong decision, it could be the end of my million dollar deal. | ” |
Ika meets Jeff at Tribal Council, and Jeff opens by asking Drea about the "vibe" of the Ika tribe. After a long pause, Drea concedes that she does not know how to explain the vibe. Though Ika claims to have unified, Drea has not seen this unity, which frustrates her because she values teamwork. Tori agrees, hoping that tonight's vote will rectify whatever is upsetting the "vibe". Swati summarizes the afternoon at camp. She came into Tribal Council believing that somebody would be punished for getting caught trying to make a big move, but questions if that "somebody" has successfully shifted the blame to someone else. She shirks the vagueness by calling out Tori for trying to blindside Drea; Tori rebuts, calling Swati out for projecting onto Tori, to which Swati vehemently objects. Drea and Romeo whisper; Drea is unsure if she will use her Extra Vote. Swati insists that she is unwilling to go home for someone else's mistakes.
Drea is frustrated that she is always targeted despite being the main person trying to rally her tribe. She states that she has to consolidate all the information that she is being fed to synthesize a single truth. Swati pleads her case, trying to refute Tori's supposed narrative that she is an agent of chaos before affirming her allegiance to Ika. Romeo agrees with Jeff's observation that Swati is clearly gunning for Tori, and believes that the majority's best move is to stick together. This, in his opinion, will make Ika more cohesive moving forward. Tori fires back at Swati, sniping that it is difficult to counter Swati's points when few of her points were based in reality. She deems Swati's attempt "sad", but concedes that Swati has the right to do what she has to do to stay alive. Rocksroy commends Swati for coming out of her shell, and she thanks Rocksroy for his support. Swati concludes Tribal Council proceedings by saying that she will reflect on her Survivor experience for years to come. Then, the tribe gets up to vote.
Tori |
“ | (voting against Swati) I really, truly, wanted to work with you, but your paranoia got the best of you, so I just have to go into self-preservation mode. | ” |
Jeff tallies the votes and returns to the podium. Swati plays her Shot in the Dark and hands him her scroll; she clarifies that this reflects her distrust in Tori, not in her allies, earning her an eye roll from Tori. Unfortunately, Swati's scroll opens to show "Not Safe". Jeff reads the votes and Swati is voted out, 3-1, becoming the fourth person to leave the game with only Rocksroy casting a vote against Tori.
Challenges[]
Challenge: Tangled Up Sled Slide
Three of the four competing tribe members will work around a hitching post to untangle three ropes from a braid. Once the ropes have been untangled, they must throw the rope to snag a sled on which a hoop stands. Each of the four members must then throw one ball into the hoop. The first tribe to finish wins.
Reward: Ten fish and an Idol Nullifier will be secretly planted at the winning tribe's camp.
Winner: Taku
Challenge: Beyond the Tuna
Two tribe members sit in a boat, which two other members are tethered to. The swimmers must get the boat to a tower, from which the passengers will leap to collect two keys. The swimmers must then get the boat to a platform, where they must use the keys to release puzzle pieces which they will use to solve a hanging vertical puzzle of a tuna. The first two tribes to solve their puzzle wins.
Additional Stipulation: The losing tribe must forfeit their flint, though they can win it back if they win the next Immunity Challenge.
Winners (in order of finish): Taku and Vati

Other[]
- In her final words, Swati erroneously stated that Rob Mariano was the fourth person voted out of his first season, when in actuality he was the seventh.
- She clarified that she was referring to Rob Cesternino, who was the fourth person eliminated from Survivor: All-Stars.[9]
- Coincidentally, Swati was born the day that the fourth episode of Survivor: Marquesas aired.
- This episode marks the first time that the Around the Bend challenge has been used as a standalone tribal Reward Challenge, as well as the only time this challenge was used in the tribal stage of the game and more than two tribes competed.
