To Betray or Not to Betray is the fourth episode of Survivor: Guatemala.

Story[]

Day 9[]

The sun rises over the Guatemalan jungle over the Nakúm camp, where everyone is asleep in the shelter. Cindy Hall talks in her confessional about just how hot it's been and how crazy it is to think about. Margaret Bobonich says much the same in her own confessional, adding that mosquitoes are just as draining as the intense heat is. Judd Sergeant comes back from collecting firewood, talking with the other tribe members about how bad the mosquitoes are getting, comparing it to a swarm of killer bees, and there are several views of the tribe members' mosquito bites to prove it. Brandon Bellinger talks about how every factor nature is throwing at them adds up, but does mention that they're ahead in tribe numbers and wonders how the other tribe is doing.

Over at Yaxhá's camp, the tribe spend the afternoon catching more minnows from the fish trap Lydia Morales made earlier. Rafe Judkins talks in confessional about how he and Gary Hogeboom are fish-catching machines, stating that they manage to catch one or two minnows every time. A large crocodile is spotted in the distant water, and the tribe stare at it moving past, seemingly moving towards them. It snaps up a large fish in its mouth and swims away, much to the tribe's amazement. Jamie Newton speaks in confessional that if any one of the tribe weren't careful, they could end up like that fish.

At the Reward Challenge, Jeff Probst informs Nakúm that Brianna Varela was voted out at the last Tribal Council. Jeff informs both tribes that this is a pause from the rigorous challenges they've participated in, and instead they must fill out a simple questionnaire, and that the answers will have a direct impact. The only rule is they cannot write their own name down when answering. Danni Boatwright and Jamie were both voted as the tribe members that needed the most nourishment. When called up by Probst, they each receive an apple. Gary and Bobby Jon Drinkard are designated as being the smelliest members of each tribe, and they recieve a bush shower. Jeff then asks both tribes which man and which woman should be rewarded with a picnic atop a Maya pyramid. Gary and Amy O'Hara are chosen, as are Margaret and Judd. They all receive a fresh heap of food in a basket, and Margaret is overjoyed to see all the food they get to share. The four take the picnic and leave for the pyramid. Among those left, Jeff asks who is the most patriotic to their tribe. Brian Corridan and Cindy are named as such. Jeff, however, pulls a huge tribe switch out of nowhere, as everyone but those two are switching tribes. The four players currently at the picnic are immune from the switch and will also remain on their original tribe. All the Yaxhá members immediately move to the over tribe mat, and Nakúm draw from cups containing new tribe-colored buffs. Of the five hidden, only one is a yellow buff for Nakúm, and Brooke Struck is the lucky recipient of that buff. All the other members are now Yaxhá members. The new tribes are as follows:

During the picnic, Gary, Amy, Judd, and Margaret all enjoy the view from the heights of an old Maya pyramid. When talking about what they do for a living, Gary continues to tell everyone that he is a landscaper and not a former NFL quarterback. Amy talks in confessional jokingly about whether Gary was a multi-millionaire or not, she'd "freakin' kill" him.

Brian and the new members of Yaxhá return to camp, where a basket of fruits and vegetables are waiting for them by their shelter. Amy and Gary return from the picnic to find the former member of Nakúm in their camp, and Amy jokingly swears after seeing them. Danni pokes at Gary a bit, saying she thought he played football at Central Michigan, which was indeed Gary's alma mater. Gary does "confirm" that, though he went to Central Michigan, he just didn't play football. Danni is a bit worried about Gary when talking in confessional, stating that she feels bad about mentioning that he was a former NFL quarterback, and that would lead to people thinking that he doesn't need the million dollars, thus making him an easy target to vote out.

Amy
I was like, completely blown away. "Heyyyy! What's up guys? Hey, nice to meet you!" and I'm lookin' at Gary. I'm like, "We're decimated here! Decimated! Gone!"

Over at Nakúm, Judd and Margaret are shocked to see four people from Yaxhá in their camp. Margaret only hopes that the four original Nakúm members stay together, but says that anything can happen.

S11 margaret t
Margaret
Oh. My. Gosh... With this switch-up today, I don't feel safe at all. Not at all.
S11 judd t
Judd
Tribes has been switched, man, it's great, I love it, man. It didn't bother me at the least bit. I know it bothered Margaret and Margaret's there walkin' on eggshells, man...I'm just glad that I'm not in part with those other guys, man. I mean, we had Bobby Jon, we had Blake, we had Brandon, and me, which was kind of...uh, you know, a male tosterone [sic] thing. Now over here, man, I know I'm the big gun around here, man, I know it. You feel like you're King Kong, man. (imitates King Kong) Ahh, it feels good, baby.

Stephenie LaGrossa and Jamie sit and talk about which member of Nakúm they can bring in to keep the Yaxhá four's chances secure in this game, and they bring Judd in. They ask him about who he's closer with and Judd talks about how he was closer with the guys that are now on the other tribe than the girls that remained on Nakúm with him. Judd says he's all for working with Jamie and Stephenie. Margaret peers over in the corner of her eye to see Judd on the temple with Jamie and Stephenie seemingly being playful with them, and she starts feeling suspicious of him.

Day 11[]

At Yaxhá, Amy is still more than concerned about the new tribe dynamics, repeating that there's only her, Gary, and Brian against the four former Nakúm members. Her worries are confirmed as the cameras cut to Bobby Jon and Blake Towsley that Amy is the target if they go to Tribal Council. Amy's ankle bothers her and the swelling is getting bad, but Amy speaks in confessional that she isn't going to let a sprained ankle get the better of her.

At the Immunity Challenge, both tribes get into a tangle during the rowing portion of the challenge on the way towards the bags hanging over the water, and Nakúm have a slight advantage getting their third and final bag first. Stephenie is the first to attempt throwing clubs at the tiles for Nakúm, and manages to break one quickly. Judd begins throwing clubs as Brian gets to his position to throw clubs, but tags out with Danni. Judd barely misses the furthest target, while Danni smashes Yaxhá's first tile. Blake quickly smashes the second target for Yaxhá, but Judd comes back with a hit on the second tile, and Jamie takes his place. Jamie hits the third tile but it doesn't break fully. Both Jamie and Brandon are neck and neck, constantly coming close to breaking the third tile. Jamie, however, comes out on top, winning the Immunity Idol for Yaxhá.

Nakúm come home empty-handed. Rafe gives the lowdown on how his and the other former Yaxhá members' plan is going, hoping that Judd will defect to their side to prevent a 4-4 deadlocked tie, meanwhile, Amy, Cindy, and Margaret and also concerned about Judd, as they need him to ensure a deadlocked tie. Margaret tries convincing Judd to stay with them, explaining what is essentially the Pagonging strategy to Judd. Judd speaks in confessional while wracking his brain about who to vote for.

At Tribal Council, Jeff Probst brings up an interesting statistic regarding Stephenie: in the seven challenges she has competed in in Guatemala, she's only won one of them, and when including her time in Palau, she is 4-21 in all challenges she's competed in. Stephenie sheepishly replies that she may indeed have some extremely bad luck when it comes to Survivor. Margaret talks about tribe dynamics when asked by Probst, talking about the time when she saw Judd talking with Stephenie and Jamie, which Judd retorts that it was nothing more than him getting to know them, and vice versa, taking in the sights and shooting the breeze. Lydia Morales speaks about whether she feels safer or more in danger on this new tribe, saying she does feel vulnerable as she feels the other four members of the tribe don't really know her yet. Brooke talks about how having strength will keep them safe because it's all about winning challenges moving forward. Judd talks about how important it is to read people and make critical decisions, saying that he can feel when there's a connection. Probst then closes the discussions and moves forward with the vote. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Judd ultimately decided to flip to the four former members of Yaxhá, sending Brooke home in a 5-3 vote.

Challenges[]

Immunity Challenge: Rows And Throws
Both tribes must paddle out and retrieve three of their tribe-colored bags, then race back to shore. Once back, they must untie the bags and dump them into a basket. Inside each bag are Mayan war clubs, which they must then throw at three different tiles. The first tribe to break all three tiles wins immunity.
Winner: Yaxhá

Voting Confessionals[]

Only Brooke, Rafe, and Margaret's voting confessionals were shown in the episode.

S11 brooke t
Brooke
(voting against Lydia) Lydia, I think you're one of the hardest workers around camp, but I'm just making this vote based on the decision that we need to win Immunity Challenges.
S11 jamie t
Jamie
(voting against Brooke) In all of your law classes, I'm surprised they didn't teach how to just be quiet and listen. You don't have to be the most intelligent person to talk; you kept trying to outdo Rafe and what he was talking about intelligence-wise. There's smart people everywhere. You picked a bad jury. I hope you do a better job next time when you're a real lawyer.
S11 cindy t
Cindy
(voting against Lydia) This has nothing to do with the kind of person you are, because I've already told you you were a survivor before you started this game. You're an inspiration to me in everything I do because of who you are. It has nothing to do with you; it just has to do with tribal ties that happened before I got to know you. Good luck.
S11 margaret t
Margaret
(voting against Lydia) Lydia, you are an incredible woman whom I have great admiration and respect for, and I'm not sure who's stronger, you or Brooke. But I have tribe loyalties, and I gave Brooke my word, and I won't go back. Good luck.
S11 lydia t
Lydia
(voting against Brooke) You're a very sweet, wonderful person. I'm happy that I got an opportunity to meet you, but this is nothing personal. I'm just going with the tribe.
S11 rafe t
Rafe
(voting against Brooke) Brooke, you're an awesome person, but this vote is for strategy tonight. If you go, I have the chance to go a lot further. I'm sorry.
S11 stephenie t
Stephenie
(voting against Brooke) You're a sweet girl. I wish I didn't have to do this, but it's part of my strategy to get me further in this game, and it's what I think will get Nakúm a couple more immunity wins, hopefully. See you later.
S11 judd t
Judd
(voting against Brooke) Brooke, you need to be more aggressive.

Final Words[]

S11 brooke bw
Brooke
Even though I have only got to be out here for eleven days, I did so much stuff that I never thought I would be able to do. I think I proved myself going through the eleven-mile jungle trek, but I don't think my new team members got to see that. I didn't get a longer chance out here to prove how strong I am. I want to wish the girls from my original team good luck. You guys are some of the strongest women I have ever met.
