Tied Destinies is a recurring game mechanic introduced in non-American versions of the game. For one round, the castaways' fates in the game are tied, for better and for worse.
Overview[]
For a period of the game, an even-numbered group of castaways will be divided into pairs. Challenges, whether for reward or immunity are won as a pair. Any play of a Hidden Immunity Idol or any immunity-granting advantages will protect both members of the pair. Conversely, if either member gets voted out, their partner will also be eliminated from the game by default.
After a pair is eliminated, the Tied Destinies mechanic is retired and the castaways will resume to competing as individual players. It should be noted that despite being paired, the castaways will still vote individually at Tribal Council, though any votes received by a player will also be counted against their partner.
History[]
Sweden[]
The paired elimination mechanic was first seen internationally in Expedition Robinson 2003; on Day 7, the Challengers team would each select a member of the Veterans team of the opposite gender to pair with, competing to decide the order to pick. Björn was left unpicked, and thus would be eliminated.
Over the next four episodes, only the former Challengers would be able to vote and receive votes; however, the former Veterans were tied to their partners, and would be eliminated along with their duo. In the event of a tie, the former Veterans would instead cast the votes. After being voted out, pairs would be forced to compete against each other on The Borderlands.
In Episode 4, after the pairs were formed, the cast would attend Tribal Council as a group, and the division between the men and women of the former Veterans team would lead to 6 votes landing on Mikael, dragging Sylvia in his fall.
In Episode 5, new teams were formed; the South Team would lose immunity, and after a tie between Mariana and Vincent, Zübeyde chose to flip her vote and eliminate Vincent.
In Episode 6, the North Team would lose immunity, and a struggling Madeleine would be voted out, eliminating Martin along with her.
In Episode 7, the South Team would once again lose; although Camilla asked to be voted out, her partner Johan did not want to face elimination. As such, after a tie between Camilla, Daniel, and Mariana, Robban would choose to save Johan and vote out Daniel and Zübeyde.
The tied destinies twist would not see a return in the Swedish edition until Love Edition, where it would feature as a core mechanic of gameplay at the merge, both in the main game and on the Garden of Eden. This version of the format would feature multiple differences to the traditional mechanics of the Tied Destinies twist.
Every cycle, beginning with Cycle 6, a challenge would be held between the least-populated gender of the Sreros tribe. Then, in the order of how they placed in the challenge, they each pick a contestant of the opposite gender to pair with. The final unpicked player, in this case Denice, would be eliminated and sent to the Garden of Eden. Pairs would compete for immunity together, although unlike other editions of the twist, contestants would vote and receive votes seperately.
Starting in Cycle 6, the players on the Garden of Eden would compete in pairs also; Robin and Nellie, the current Adam and Eve, and Pontus and Denice, the current challengers, would be paired together. Each new pair would be formed from the next to players to enter the Garden of Eden.
On the Garden of Eden, Nellie and Robin would lose the first pair duel. As Dan had won immunity, Oskar would instead be targetted for his physicality, despite his partner Jennifer's protests.
In Cycle 7, to recruit Jennifer into an alliance, Kalle would choose her over former partner Malin S., who was the last player picked and therefore was eliminated. Malin S. would proceed to lose the second pair duel alongside Oskar. Kalle's newfound majority alliance would target Ali to begin picking off the other pairs.
In Cycle 8, Ali's former partner Sara was the last player picked, and she lost the third pair duel alongside Ali. Concocting a plan to steal challenge threat Dan as a partner from Melissa, Jennifer would convince the alliance to target Vera over Filip to gain the ability to participate in the next pair forming contest. After being voted out, Vera ultimately refused the Garden of Eden.
In Cycle 9, Filip was the last picked, although would not have a partner yet given Vera's departure. After winning the pair forming contest, Jennifer would partner with Dan, and her, David, Kalle, and Mia would betray Melissa and vote her out.
In Cycle 10, Filip and Melissa would lose the fourth and final pair duel, and Denice and Pontus would return to the main game. Kalle was the last player picked and therefore eliminated, and in the final immunity challenge, David and Mia would be eliminated also, with the final two pairs advancing to the Final Tribal Council.
The jury voted individually, but would vote for a pair to win the game; Dan and Jennifer triumphed over Denice and Pontus, being declared the Dual Survivors.
The Tied Destinies twist would once again return to the franchise in Cycle 7 of El Nido, returning to the traditional format and featuring pairs for only a single cycle. Matteo and Per's Vote Steal advantage tipped the numbers toward voting out Charlie and Lea, although the latter pair would challenge the former to a duel after smashing an Urn of Faith. Charlie and Lea lost the duel and were eliminated.
France[]
The term "Tied Destinies" was formally coined in Malaisie, when host Denis Brogniart announced that the remaining castaways would be paired up for three days. they would win Reward and Immunity as a pair and at the end of the three days, two castaways would have to leave the island following a unique vote.
In Malaisie, Catherine and Camille were the first casualties of the twist after the pair of Thierry correctly played his Hidden Immunity Necklace on his partner Myriam.
The twist was used again in every other Koh-Lanta season except La Nouvelle Édition and L'Île au Trésor. Although this twist does not happen at the exact same time each season, it usually happens around early merge.
In Johor, Nessim and Charlaine were targetted because of their lack of work ethic around camp.
In Thaïlande, Laureen and Steve were voted out because of the latter's grating personality as well as fighting continuously during their time as a pair. Pascal tried to strategize and save his ally, but he eventually chose not to play his Hidden Immunity Necklace on the young woman.
In Cambodge, Corentin and Kelly's lack of relationship with their fellow tribemates and inability to find a Hidden Immunity Necklace caused their demise.
In Fidji, the votes were equally split between Marguerite, targetted by the younger contestants, and Maxime who had lost the trust of his fellow older tribe members. A savvy idol play by Romain managed to save him and his partner. However, immediately after the Tied Destinies twist, Mélanie was evacuated. As per the rules of Koh-Lanta, the castaway that was eliminated at the previous Tribal Council had the opportunity to replace her in the game. Since André and Maxime were voted out as a pair, they competed in an endurance challenge with the winner rejoining the merged tribe. André won the challenge and returned to the game, eventually winning the season.
In Le Combat des Héros, Yassin and Alban were eliminated after their alliance flipped on them. They used Yassin's weakened position to get rid of him before he had the opportunity to go on an Immunity streak.
In La Guerre des Chefs, Cyril and Maud, the last members standing from the Kama tribe, were partners and had an obvious target on their back. Their scrambling as well as Ikalu members Cindy and Brice managed to save them from elimination while the latter was voted out in a 9-2-2 vote, thus bringing down kitesurfing instructor Sophie with him.
In L'Île des Héros, at the Tribal Council, a first vote ended in a tie between Charlotte and Éric, with 6 votes each. A second round is then held, where the penalty votes against Alexandra and Éric no longer count, the black vote against Éric no longer counts, and adventurers only have the choice between Charlotte Éric and. In the end, Charlotte is the one who is voted out, six to four for Éric. The fates of the pairs being linked, she drags Teheiura down with her. Before leaving, Charlotte reveals to the rest of the tribe that she had an Immunity Necklace, which she chose not to play; all are appalled. Teheiura speaks up and says that he too had an Immunity Necklace. This situation is unprecedented, and this is the first time a pair has left the game with two necklaces in their possession.
In Les 4 Terres, at the Tribal Council, Brice gets two votes (those of Loïc and Lola), Fabrice gets three votes (those of Alix, Laurent, and Dorian) and Laurent gets the six remaining votes. He is consequently eliminated and drags Alix, his partner, in his fall.
In Les Armes Secrètes, at the Tribal Council, Laetitia and Vincent play their necklace but Lucie plays her black bracelet on Maxine and Thomas. With this secret weapon, it is finally Vincent who drags in his partner Laetitia down with him.
In La Légende, at the Tribal Council, it is finally the duo Christelle-Teheiura who is eliminated with four votes against Christelle, because of a big division of votes. This is Teheiura's second consecutive elimination in the Tied Destinies.
In Le Totem Maudit, it is Maxime who is eliminated and drags Louana in his fall. Louana feels betrayed by her ex-green friends with whom she had an alliance. François, who voted against Maxime, explains to her that he feels more in phase with the values of the other pairs. For his part, Maxime is angry...
In Le Feu Sacré, Esteban is eliminated with 6 votes against 4 (for Nicolas). This also causes the elimination of his partner Clémence. If Esteban is philosophical, Clémence is bitter. Esteban chooses to give his black vote to Quentin. They both leave the Tribal Council, and discover the sign announcing that they are going to face each other in a duel and one of them will have the possibility to come back in the adventure.
Philippines[]
In Celebrity Doubles Showdown, ten pairs of celebrities competed similar to the Blood vs. Water format seen in the American version. The season began with an Immunity Challenge where the two winning pairs will receive Immunity Bracelets that would protect both members, and the right to sort the remaining pairs into tribes through a Schoolyard Pick. Host Richard Gutierrez clarified that while the castaways were paired, they will still vote as individual players but votes will be counted against both members of the pair and will be eliminated together, and there was only going to be one Sole Survivor. The winning pairs, rugby teammates Arnold Aninion and John Odulio and former onscreen couple Chuckie Dreyfus and Isabel Granada selected the tribes, with Arnold and John choosing members for the Bulan tribe, and Chuckie and Isabel for the Tala tribe.
On Day 2, despite seemingly having a considerable position within the tribe, Geneva Cruz from Bulan opted to leave the game as its cutthroat nature conflicted against her morals. Her partner, ex-husband KC Montero, who did not feel the same way, was allowed by production to compete as an individual castaway.
An additional layer to the pairs format called the Temptation Reward was introduced after the Day 3 Reward/Immunity Challenge where the tribe that won reward will be sent away (similar to the journeys introduced in Survivor 41) to choose between keeping the tribe's reward in exchange for an advantage in the game. Tala won the challenge and selected friends Angelika Schmeing and Jackie Forster to partake in the Temptation Reward where they were enticed into exchanging the creature comforts they won from the challenge for "twin" Immunity Bracelets. By taking the Immunity Bracelets, one of them will be forced to switch to Bulan; and with the paired elimination still in play, if one of them gets voted out with or without playing their bracelet, the surviving partner's bracelet will have to be flushed out or face elimination by default. Angelika and Jackie chose to keep the tribe's initial reward. The next day, the losing tribe, Bulan, decided to vote out friends Alyssa Alano and Aifha Medina in a 7-2 vote. After one member quitting and a paired elimination, Bulan was quickly reduced to 7 members.
On Day 5, Bulan won the next Reward Challenge and chose mother-daughter pair of Maribel Lopez and Mara Yokohama to partake in the Temptation Reward during which they faced the same temptation as Angelika and Jackie had. This time however, they chose to take the Immunity Bracelets given their unpopular position within the tribe, with Mara choosing to stay on Bulan and Maribel moving to Tala, increasing Tala's roster to eleven members while decimating Bulan further at six. Tala however lost the next Immunity Challenge, but just as the tribe was a about to vote, Angelika and Jackie left the game due to exhaustion and conflicting game ethics. After Tribal Council, dating couple Ellen Adarna and Filo Cucueco also quit the game for the same reasons, almost erasing Tala's numbers advantage over Bulan 7-6.
After winning the Reward Challenge on Day 7, Bulan selected Arnold and John to partake in the Temptation Reward where they were tempted to give up the tribe's reward to Tala in exchange for hotdogs just for the two of them and a considerable amount of money. Despite being indispensable as the tribe's physically strongest members, the pair decidedly refused. Tala, who lost the next Immunity Challenge on Day 8, decided to split their votes between Maribel and Chuckie and Isabel who all had Immunity Bracelets. At Tribal Council, both parties played their Immunity Bracelets, causing a Null Vote. As Survivor Philippines rules dictated that playing an Immunity Bracelet was only effective for one voting round and a castaway was required to play another bracelet to stay immune, Maribel, with no second bracelet to produce, was swiftly voted out, 6-1. Because Maribel's bracelet was discarded, so was Mara's, forcibly surrendering hers the before the next Reward Challenge on Day 10. However, before the challenge, a Tribe Switch occurred, splitting up the pairs on separate tribes, retiring the paired elimination mechanic, and the castaways competed as individual players. Moreover, all future Temptation Rewards will be partaken by just one player.
Quebec[]
In Survivor Québec 3, the pairs voted collectively at Tribal Council instead of as individuals. The pair of André and Florence recieved the most votes and instead of being pernamently eliminated, they would compete in a duel where the winner would get to return to the game. Florence would defeat André in the duel, permanently eliminating him.
South Africa[]
In Immunity Island, the original Vuna members (Anesu and Kiran, Chappies and Santoni, Tyson and Wardah) and the original Zamba members (Amy and Renier and Anela and Nicole) were all coincidentally paired up with each other. Anesu, Chappies, and Santoni were in a swing vote position and held the power to side with either Tyson & Wardah or Amy & Renier. In the end, Renier was voted out 6-4 over Tyson, eliminating Amy with him too.
