In Koh-Lanta, the Tied Destinies is a game-changing twist that pairs up the remaining castaways for one unique "game cycle". At some point after the merge (Final 8, Final 10 or Final 12), a rock draw is held to divide the contestants in the appropriate number of duos and their fate in the game are tied, for better and for worse.
If someone plays a Hidden Immunity Idol, their partner is also protected, and challenges are competed by pairs (Reward and Immunity are therefore won as a pair). The person voted out at Tribal Council causes their partner's demise. In this way, two members of the merged tribe are eliminated together from the game.
History
This twist first appeared in Koh-Lanta: Malaisie, when host Denis Brogniart announced that the remaining castaways would be paired up for three days. they would win Reward and Immunity as a pair and at the end of the three days, two castaways would have to leave the island following a unique vote.
The twist was used again in every other Koh-Lanta season except Koh-Lanta: La Nouvelle Édition and Koh-Lanta: L'Île au Trésor. Although this twist does not happen at the exact same time each season, it usually happens around early merge.
Appearances
In Koh-Lanta: Malaisie, Catherine and Camille were the first casualties of the twist after the pair of Thierry correctly played his Hidden Immunity Necklace on his partner Myriam.
In Koh-Lanta: Johor, Nessim and Charlaine were targetted because of their lack of work ethic around camp.
In Koh-Lanta: Thaïlande, Laureen and Steve were voted out because of the latter's grating personality as well as fighting continuously during their time as a pair. Pascal tried to strategize and save his ally, but he eventually chose not to play his Hidden Immunity Necklace on the young woman.
In Koh-Lanta: Cambodge, Corentin and Kelly's lack of relationship with their fellow tribemates and inability to find a Hidden Immunity Necklace caused their demise.
In Koh-Lanta: Fidji, the votes were equally split between Marguerite, targetted by the younger contestants, and Maxime who had lost the trust of his fellow older tribe members. A savvy idol play by Romain managed to save him and his partner. However, immediately after the Tied Destinies twist, Mélanie was evacuated. As per the rules of Koh-Lanta, the castaway that was eliminated at the previous Tribal Council had the opportunity to replace her in the game. Since André and Maxime were voted out as a pair, they competed in an endurance challenge with the winner rejoining the merged tribe. André won the challenge and returned to the game, eventually winning the season.
In Koh-Lanta: Le Combat des Héros, Yassin and Alban were eliminated after their alliance flipped on them. They used Yassin's weakened position to get rid of him before he had the opportunity to go on an Immunity streak.
In Koh-Lanta: La Guerre des Chefs, Cyril and Maud, the last members standing from the Kama tribe, were partners and had an obvious target on their back. Their scrambling as well as Ikalu members Cindy and Brice managed to save them from elimination while the latter was voted out in a 9-2-2 vote, thus bringing down kitesurfing instructor Sophie with him.
In Koh-Lanta: L'Île des Héros, at the Tribal Council, a first vote ended in a tie between Charlotte and Eric, with 6 votes each. A second round is then held, where the penalty votes against Alexandra and Eric no longer count, the black vote against Eric no longer counts, and adventurers only have the choice between Eric and Charlotte. In the end, Charlotte is the one who is voted out, six to four for Eric. The fates of the pairs being linked, she drags Teheiura down with her. Before leaving,Charlotte tells the rest of the tribe that she had an Immunity Necklace, which she chose not to play. All are appalled. Teheiura speaks up and says he too had an Immunity Necklace. This situation is unprecedented, and this is the first time a pair has left the game with two necklaces in their possession.
