The Great Divide is the second episode of Survivor: Thailand.
Story[]
Day 4[]
The day started early at Chuay Gahn when Clay Jordan disrupts the sleep of his tribemates with his snoring. The tribe wakes up laughing.
Helen |
“ | As a tribe, you do sleep in close quarters and it's hard. Clay snores, and I don't know how a guy that's only five foot five has that much sound coming out of his body. But out here, it's exhausting. | ” |
Later, Chuay Gahn paddles to collect water from their water source, but getting the boat ready for travel is a tough task all in itself. Though she claims that she remembers where the water source is, even as going far as not taking the map, Helen Glover, along with Jan Gentry, get lost in the middle of the sea for five hours. Helen and Jan reach a cove, but it is not the same cove they went before. To add insult to injury, Jan complains that she is extremely tired after paddling for hours, and does not help Helen locate the water hole. Frustrated by Jan's lack of cooperation, Helen laments on their predicament.
Ghandia |
“ | The boat we have is a piece of crap. It fills with sand, it fills with water, it's extremely heavy. With our water source as far away as it is, it makes the journey to go get water even more frustrating. | ” |
Helen |
“ | It was a nightmare. If had a pistol in my pocket, I would have pulled it out, shot her first, me second... That's why I don't carry a gun. | ” |
While waiting for Helen and Jan to return, Clay, Brian Heidik, and Ted Rogers, Jr. play golf using Clay's luxury item— a golf club. After digging a few holes in the sand, the men play away their boredom. As time goes on, they start to worry about Helen and Jan.
While Chuay Gahn's morning started on a high note, Sook Jai's morning was anything but good, as creating shelter became more rigorous, since the tribe was left soaked under pouring rain in the past four days. While the rest of the tribe feverishly builds their shelter, Jed Hildebrand and Stephanie Dill laze by the fire and ridicule the others' efforts.
Jake |
“ | Building the shelter has almost become this tribe's obsession. | ” |
jed |
“ | Building a shelter seems frivolous to me. It's the fourth day and it's not even done. | ” |
Stephanie |
“ | Jed has been taking care of getting food, and I have been primarily the water. So if you took the two of us out of the equation, I'm not sure how the other six would be. | ” |
Back at Chuay Gahn, Brian, Clay, Ted, Ghandia Johnson, and Tanya Vance continue to worry about Helen and Jan, who have yet to return to camp. Meanwhile, Helen finally finds the water hole after hours of paddling, but her relief is short-lived, as her frustrations about Jan's noncooperation continue, though she remains calm and not vent her feelings. After five hours, the two women finally return to their tribe.
That afternoon at Sook Jai, Erin Collins, Jake Billingsley, Penny Ramsey, and Shii Ann Huang collect shellfish for dinner. Instead of unity, tension almost arises when Jed, Stephanie, and Robb decide not to join the other five at dinner, which Shii Ann finds strange.
Shii Ann |
“ | Food is one of the things humans share to show affection for each other. But Stephanie, Robb, and Jed didn't want to eat any of it. There are so few happy moments here. We are fighting against nature, against each other. We all want to have a good time, but before the good times, we have to work together as a team. | ” |
Jed, Robb, and Stephanie decide to sleep outside the raised hut the other five made, but as a thunderstorm hits camp, Jed sneaks himself under the shelter he ridiculed the whole day.
Day 5[]
At Sook Jai, the tribe realizes that the rain continued overnight, leaving their camp muggy. Much to Shii Ann's annoyance, she finds Jed sleeping blissfully under the shelter he mocked. On the other hand, Stephanie endured the night outside the shelter, wearing only her raincoat, only ending up getting sick.
Ken |
“ | I think it was very weird that she spent the entire night sleeping in the torrential rain, and it seemed like she was being pig-headed; and right now, she is sick. | ” |
At Chuay Gahn, Brian started the day by strumming his luxury item, his guitar. Ted comically belts a tune, albeit off-key. Oddly, the monkeys join in the fun, apparently attracted to Ted's voice. Later, the tribe celebrates Helen's 20th wedding anniversary by throwing a surprise party for her, after noticing her melancholic mood that day. Ghandia and Tanya even make a flower wreath for her.
Helen |
“ | I am thinking about my husband today. It would be nice to be at home, having a candlelight dinner. But we can celebrate when I get back. | ” |
The tribes assemble for their next Reward Challenge. In a close race, Sook Jai's speed narrowly gives them their second consecutive win to win a lantern and fishing supplies, including a 30-meter fishing net, which is part much bigger than the one that came along with their supplies. That night, morale is low at Chuay Gahn after their second straight loss.
Day 6[]
In the morning, Chuay Ghan awake to discover squid all over there beach.
At the Immunity Challenge, Sook Jai barely beats Chuay Ghan for the win. Dejected by their loss, Chuay Ghan heads back to their camp.
Ghandia tells Clay and Ted that she wants to vote out Helen because she is annoying her. Helen notes that everyone likes Tanya and that it could be one of those votes which is up in the air. At Tribal Council, Tanya is voted out 5-2 because the tribe is worried about her worsening health.
Challenges[]
Challenge: Palanquin Slalom
Each tribe would have to pick one person to act as the guide, while the others would be blindfolded. The blindfolded tribe members would have to carry the guide in the palanquin. The guide would navigate them through a figure of eight course. Along the way, they would find several stations with a bag hanging from them. The first tribe to complete the course and collect their seven bags would win.

The first tribe to successfully retrieve all six pieces and place them correctly on their flower would win.

Voting Confessionals[]
Brian |
“ | (voting against Tanya) Like an older brother would to a younger sister, gotta take care of you, gotta make sure you get a full meal tonight. So, Tanya, need you to get better, okay? Enjoy. Talk to you soon. | ” |
Ghandia |
“ | (voting against Helen) I don't feel comfortable with how you try to keep your emotions in check, and also, I just don't think that you effectively handle stress. Seems like you can kind of get too anxious and just start bugging out, frankly. I think, in the long run, that's going to hurt the group. | ” |
Final Words[]
Tanya |
“ | Chuay Gahn, this has been the opportunity of a lifetime. It's been a great experience, and it does change your life. I learned that I take things at home for granted. And I'm not mad at any of you for picking me. And I just love every one of you, and I hope you bring it in and win the million dollars. I hope you have a great time. | ” |
