The Chicken Has Flown the Coop is the second episode of Survivor: David vs. Goliath.
Story[]
Night 3[]
Reeling from Pat's sudden evacuation, the David tribe returns to camp demoralized now they have lost one of their strongest members. While they had received their flint, there is no dry wood to start a fire with due to the seemingly endless rain.
Jessica |
“ | Today was rough. Pat was the morale booster around camp and to say goodbye to him just knocked us all down. | ” |
Desperate for fire, the tribe attempts to make one but to no avail. The rain only intensifies during the night, leaving both David and Goliath tribes struggling to huddle in their shelters, mostly sleepless.
Day 4[]
The torrential downpours continue the next day, and the Goliaths also fail in making fire. Angelina breaks down because of their helpless situation.
Angelina |
“ | Since we started this game, we have been in a constant state of being wet, cold, and it's crushing. Because it almost feels sometimes like, "is the end in sight?" | ” |
At David, Christian walks away from camp to collect more bamboo for their shelter. Nick volunteers to join him. In the woods, Nick expresses his relief to Christian, believing it would have been him voted out had they went to Tribal Council. In his confessional, Christian admits it would have been the case. The two make an alliance, with Nick calling themselves the "Mason-Dixon".
Christian |
“ | I'm glad we didn't go to Tribal [Council], because the plan was to vote out Nick, which I didn't wanna lose Nick, I mean I didn't wanna vote him out at all. I actually like him a lot. Personally, we get along well, and also the fact that we didn't have to have a vote means that we can sort of have this ambiguity of alliances still. Whereas once we do vote, that's where it's clear cut, that's when we know where everyone stands. | ” |
Nick |
“ | Each new day I get out here is a blessing 'cause I was only supposed to get 3, so I'm either gonna win or I'm gonna die trying. I've always felt that connection with Christian; we're like J.T. and Stephen from Survivor: Tocantins. J.T was like a country boy from Alabama and Stephen was like a genius. Between the two of us, we really gotta look out for each other. So, I think it's time for some more alliance making. The Mason-Dixon Line runs right over the top of Maryland and right over the top of Kentucky. I think the Mason-Dixon is here for the long haul. | ” |
The two tribes receive Tree Mail along with fire-making kits and tarps to help them in the unrelenting rain.
Dan |
“ | Life is golden right now! I've got shelter, fire, idol in my jacket, rice in my belly, Kara by my side every single night. Living the dream life right now. | ” |
Later, Kara asks Dan where he hid his Hidden Immunity Idol. Dan says it is wrapped in a sock.
Dan |
“ | [Kara]'s terrified that somebody's gonna go digging in my jacket and find that idol. I'm like, "Listen girl, no one's going to expect my idol's gonna be somewhere in an obvious spot. The only two people who know about my idol are Natalia and Kara. Definitely two too many, but the one person I can absolutely trust in this game I feel like is Kara. | ” |
Dan and Kara's relationship becomes increasingly more evident around camp. Jeremy tells Alec such a couple is dangerous in the game, while Natalie warns Kara of becoming too obvious.
Kara |
“ | It's really difficult to be in an alliance with Dan because he's so obvious about it! I have to protect myself. Two people that make it so evident that they are loyal to each other, it never goes well. So now I'm scrambling to let the girls know, like, "Yo, I'm here to play, I'm here for your loyalty." I'm really praying that they can see that. | ” |
Alec |
“ | In my mind, Kara's playing Dan. She's been charming him ever since we got on this damn island. I think he's blinded by Kara's good looks. It's a bad move, brother. Bad move. | ” |
Wanting to help Kara's predicament, Angelina proposes to Kara to utilize her relationship with Dan, along with Angelina's with John, and Natalia's with Alec, to form a six-person majority.
Natalia |
“ | Us three girls are clearly in charge, and we know it, and we have these boys wrapped around our fingers; and we have Dan's idol in our back pocket. The fact that me and Kara are the only ones that know about it means we hold the power. | ” |
Unknown to the three girls, Jeremy shamelessly begins to go through his tribemates' bags with Mike as his lookout. Not long enough, Jeremy finds the Hidden Immunity Idol wrapped in Dan's jacket, wrapped in socks. He tells Mike about this. Jeremy believes Dan does not know how to use the idol correctly and Kara already knows Dan has it. Mike appreciates receiving new information from Jeremy which could help him further in the game.
Jeremy |
“ | I'm playing this game the hardest. I will go through everybody's stuff at anytime within reason. Going through Dan's things, I found something wrapped around his sock, and I saw the idol, and that's enough for me. I'm not surprised that Dan's idol was easily found in his coat because he's playing with his heart and no strategy. Smart people don't leave it in their stuff and hide it. | ” |
Mike |
“ | I got in trouble the very first day for running off looking for an Immunity Idol, and now the fact that Jeremy trusts me so much that he's telling me and showing me all these secrets gave me new life in the game. Dan may think he's strong and powerful because he has the Immunity Idol, but actually in this game, information is the advantage, and having that information is probably more powerful than the idol itself. | ” |
Back at the David tribe, following his octopus catch the other day, Davie returns to camp after another fishing trip, saying he has embraced his provider role. This, however, has also allowed him more liberty to look for the Hidden Immunity Idol without prying eyes. In his search, he finds something out of place: A string entwined on a twig concealed in vines.
Davie |
“ | After I came back with the octopus, I got a lot of praise, and a lot of, "Thanks, Davie, this is great!" So I just decided to fall into it, and I think that's my role here, just being a provider. I know I want to leave my mark in this game, and I think I'm down the right path. My mom gave this cross [necklace], and I'm just praying to God that something stands out, something that could help me in the game. | ” |
Davie traces where the string ends and finds the Hidden Immunity Idol wrapped in cloth. Excited, Davie pulls the idol out of the vines and hides it in his crotch.
Davie |
“ | I've never seen an idol before but this is authentic, man! I'm loving this moment right now! | ” |
Day 5[]
At the David camp, Carl realizes that voting Nick out would have been a bad idea now that they lost Pat. With the Davids down one member, it is imperative to win the next Immunity Challenge. He throws Lyrsa's name to Nick, Bi, Jessica, and Elizabeth, citing her perceived weak physique. Elizabeth, who has made an alliance with Lyrsa, does not appreciate this and alerts Lyrsa. Furious at the idea of being called the weakest when she won the tribe the first Reward Challenge, Lyrsa is bent on voting Carl out.
Carl |
“ | Before the last Immunity Challenge, the whole tribe was on the same page with voting Nick out, it was roadkill; and then the whole incident took place with Pat just threw everything in a whirlwind. You get rid of your strongest people first, what chances do you have at even coming close to winning a challenge? | ” |
Elizabeth |
“ | Lyrsa's name has definitely gone around because Carl wants to keep the tribe strong. It does not quite add up to me because she doesn't quite seem to be the weakest at camp. But when you hear you best buddy's name thrown out, you ain't just gonna sit idly and do nothing, you gotta get into gear! | ” |
Lyrsa |
“ | Carl says they should vote me out because I'm the weakest person in the tribe. Excuse me?! Who the f*** won the first challenge? Me! So I don't think I'm the weakest person here. I may not be as athletic as some other people, but I don't think I'm the weakest one. So I'm frustrated at Carl and I really want to confront him, but this is a game that you cannot do that because then you're screwed; but I'm pretty pissed off, I want to vote Carl out! | ” |
At the Goliath camp, most of the tribe is having a lot of fun collecting crabs. Kara catches Jeremy naked by the beach. Natalia jokingly asks Alison if she "has boogers on her teeth." Natalie, however, is displeased by her tribe's antics, alienating herself further from her tribe.
Natalie |
“ | Everybody's having fun here 24/7, but it's really childish and high school-like, so I'm not doing that. The Goliath tribe has a lot of work to do, but I'm dealing with it. And strategically, my game is to lay low, get along with everybody, and and I think it's working out, unless they're lying to me which I doubt. | ” |
Natalie breaks the fun and insists everyone fix the shelter. The tribe does so, but not without sparking multiple conversations about her aggressive personality and apparent lack of self-awareness. While sharing the same sentiment, John informs Natalie how she is coming across but suggests to keep her cool. Instead of following John's advice, Natalie confronts her tribemates individually, even telling Dan she is going to "drop a Natalie napalm" before she accepts her fate.
John |
“ | Most of the tribe would like to see Natalie go but for me personally, I like the idea of working with Natalie because it seems like an alliance that no one would suspect. I want her to trust me and to help me out deeper into the game. | ” |
Natalie |
“ | Why would you take out the old lady? I feel like they're playing like a bunch of amateurs, and if it's me, I'm not gonna go out quietly. I like to say I'm assertive, people say it's aggressive, oh well. I'm not gonna wait things happen, I'm gonna push things along, and if it makes people uncomfortable, too bad. | ” |
Upon hearing the news of Natalie's tirade, Jeremy pulls her aside in an attempt to bring some sense to her.
Jeremy |
“ | Natalie, Natalie, Natalie. What she's doing in not helping her case. I'm the only one who could try to give some real-life advice. I'm a lawyer, I know how to deal with difficult people. | ” |
The conversation only makes things worse as Natalie goes on to the defensive. Jeremy ultimately resigns to the idea that Natalie is a hopeless cause.
Jeremy |
“ | She would not listen to anybody else and she's married 24 years, so that means somebody loves her as she is. That means, she's not making any changes. If we lose at the next challenge, I'm going into turbo overdrive in getting Natalie out! | ” |
Day 6[]
The tribes convene for their second Immunity Challenge. The Goliaths are in shock to learn about Pat's accident which led him to be airlifted out of the game. After explaining the rules of the challenge, Jeff informs them they are also competing for fishing supplies. With one extra tribe member, the Goliaths sit out Natalie.
The challenge starts with Bi and Alec in the ladder portion. Alec quickly retrieves his key while Bi struggles to pull her two ladder rungs. Alec, Dan, Jeremy, John and Kara paddle out to sea to retrieve the puzzle bags for the Goliaths. As Bi is still climbing her ladder, the Goliaths extend their lead by returning to shore with their puzzle pieces, with Jeff describing the challenge has the makings of a blowout. Bi finally takes the keys, finally allowing herself, Carl, Davie, Elizabeth, and Nick to retrieve the puzzle bags for the Davids. The Davids reach their platform only to go off-course, which gives Angelina, Alison, Mike and Natalia ample time to study the puzzle before assembling them on their platform. Christian, Gabby, Jessica, and Lyrsa manage to close the gap by assembling the puzzle, but struggle to balance them on the wobbly platform. After spending a considerable amount of time in the puzzle under the sweltering heat, the Goliaths' excellent communication win them their second Immunity Challenge in a row, sending the Davids to Tribal Council.
The David tribe returns to camp overwhelmed by their second immunity loss. In the shelter, Lyrsa describes it as almost unfair with the Goliaths being physically imposing while the Davids looking minuscule. Bi disagrees, saying that in her sport, technique beats size. The MMA fighter motivates the tribe to not be discouraged. Jessica has a pragmatic view of the matter.
Jessica |
“ | Bi is completely right, but in reality, we need to win challenges, so I think for this first vote, we're gonna be very comfortable in saying that Lyrsa is gonna go home. | ” |
Later, Bi, Gabby, and Jessica are on the raft discussing the vote. Jessica claims everyone is set in voting Lyrsa. Gabby asks who else is voting for Lyrsa, but Jessica claims the vote will be unanimous and would not discuss the vote further. Though Bi agrees, Gabby is suspicious as she is given vague information. Gabby tears up in her confessional, fearing that if the tribe values strength, it only takes a matter of time before the tribe votes her out next.
Gabby |
“ | So, as far as I know, the plan is to go for Lyrsa, but Bi and Jess kinda blew me off; and I felt they were just saying general cliches and that is giving me weird vibes. If people are going on strength, it does make me uneasy because I'm not that much better than Lyrsa in challenges. I wanted tonight to be an easy vote but I don't feel as comfortable as I did a few days ago and that's really scary. | ” |
In the shelter, Elizabeth confirms to Lyrsa that she is being targeted, but assures her she got her back. While Elizabeth initially brings up the idea of voting out Carl, she suggests voting Jessica instead.
Lyrsa |
“ | I'm freaking out because I know that my name has been thrown around. I'm not stupid, I know what is going on. Jess is the one that's connecting everybody up. She's buddy-buddy with Bi and Carl. So she's the one holding them together, and we need to cut her out. | ” |
Elizabeth pitches the idea to Gabby. They are joined later joined by Lyrsa and Christian. Christian is pleased with the plan but he has reservations.
Christian |
“ | The chicken has flown the coop! The word is out, the target is Jess; and I am surprised how fast things change but I'm encouraged that things move so fast, that I feel like a hyper-frenetic person like me is the ideal person to handle it all. | ” |
Gabby and Christian later have their own conversation about the matter, and a paranoid Gabby confides to Christian she could be played. Christian eases her thoughts by saying he is completely on her side. Needing a fifth person for the vote however, Gabby asks Christian if he could bring in Nick, in which Christian believes so.
Christian |
“ | Gabby is basically begging to make the vote go the way she wanted it to; and I'm saying I'm with you all the way but I have to keep in mind that from a challenge perspective, Lyrsa is the more logical boot. | ” |
Christian brings up the plan to Nick, leaving the latter perplexed. Nick insists to vote Lyrsa instead to keep the tribe strong.
Christian |
“ | So at this point, Nick and I are weighing out should we get rid of a consensus target versus making a bigger move at this very first vote which is an inherently riskier proposition, but either way, the Mason-Dixon alliance is in the power position! This is a really big decision. It's our first Tribal, and I can make sure the vote goes the way that I prefer it to go. The position I'm in now being the one pulling the trigger is exactly where I wanna be. | ” |
At Tribal Council, the tribe agrees it was a very tough first six days, with the harsh weather being the main reason. Elizabeth remarks that the weather brought the tribe closer together. Jeff adds up to that, reminding them they also have to vote each other out. Jeff then asks Lyrsa how quickly the game has moved in six days, in which Lyrsa answers she is fully aware she is being targeted tonight. Jessica interjects, saying Lyrsa should not have waited till Tribal Council to strategize when the game begins the moment they hit the beach. Gabby understands Jessica's sentiment, but she believes everyone is playing. Bi describes her vote as simply based on challenge performance and work ethic, though she is conscious that the criteria for voting people out will later get complicated. Nick explains the game is built around deceit and trust is rare. Jessica describes the vote as scary and exhilarating at the same time. Christian adds to Jessica's statement, comparing the situation to a roller coaster ride; saying that while the person on the roller coaster is safe, the thrill of falling to death makes the ride exciting.
In the end, Bi, Carl, Davie, and Jessica all vote Lyrsa, but Christian and Nick side with Elizabeth, Gabby and Lyrsa, blindsiding Jessica in a 5-4 vote. Jessica Peet, the 19-year-old waitress from Lakeland, Florida becomes the first person voted out of Survivor: David vs. Goliath.

The first tribe to finish their puzzle wins.

Voting Confessionals[]
Jessica and Lyrsa were shown writing each other's names down. Christian's vote was not shown during his confessional.
Davie |
“ | (voting against Lyrsa) We gotta keep this tribe strong. We gotta win a challenge. | ” |
Christian |
“ | (voting against Jessica) I really wanted to work with you, but I just couldn't find a way to make it happen. I hope this works. Thank you. | ” |
Final Words[]
Jessica |
“ | To be the first one voted out, it's sad but at the same time, it's kind of a compliment to me that they viewed me as that big of a threat. I came out of the gate and I wanted to play hard and I guess I trusted some people that I shouldn't have trusted, and it bit me in the butt. In the end, I guess I was the first #blindside of the season. | ” |
