The Brave May Not Live Long, but the Cautious Don't Live at All is the third episode of Survivor: Guatemala.

Story[]

Day 7[]

Sunrise and aerial shots are what lead to the Yaxhá tribe's flag and camp. While some of the tribe members can be seen still fast asleep, Lydia Morales spent the morning gathering wood to keep the fire going. She talks in confessional about how she would have wanted to vote out Brianna Varela to keep a strong tribe. Brianna talks in her own confessional about how Lydia "isn't her cup of tea". Stephenie LaGrossa marks their tally tree, showing seven marks on it now. Brian Corridan was ecstatic to see Lydia stay after what happened before Tribal Council, stating that the plan to get Morgan McDevitt voted out and that the last minute plan was 100% his idea. He then approaches Lydia and was so happy that she's still on the tribe, talking about how no one else voted for anyone other than Morgan. He gave Lydia a pat on the back and said he was proud of her.

Meanwhile, on Nakúm, the tribe is sound asleep, until howler monkeys in the trees start to howl.

S11 judd t
Judd
I believe it's Day 7. In seven days, I probably slept a couple hours. They got this damn monkey up here that's just driving me outta my mind!... It's absolute misery, and it just goes on and on and on, and then we got, like, zookeeper here, Cindy, she's almost like a Doctor Doolittle, "the monkey's lost and he's lookin' for his brother that's all the way across the other side of the jungle", and I'm like, dude! That is the most annoyingest noise that I ever heard in my entire life, dude. It just, it really just drives you crazy, man, it makes you nuts.

Cindy Hall comments on how this adventure in the Guatemalan jungle has been so amazing that howler monkeys are the least of her concern at the moment. Cindy, herself a zookeeper, explains to Judd how howler monkeys are able to make those loud noises.

Jeff Probst welcomes both tribes to the Reward Challenge, informing Nakúm that Yaxhá voted out Morgan. Jeff reveals what they're playing for, which is items of comfort, including blankets, a lantern and fuel. Brooke Struck and Gary Hogeboom choose to be their respective tribe's sight during this blindfolded challenge. Yaxhá complete the blindfolded portion first, but Nakúm are close behind and complete it nearly as fast. Yaxhá slowly begin to fall apart when constructing the tent frame, while Nakúm fly through building the tent, sealing the victory for Nakúm.

Returning to the camp without a reward is Yaxhá, and Stephenie talks in confessional about how badly the challenge went. Amy O'Hara talks about it as well in a confessional of her own, saying that it sucks to lose, but has high hopes that she and the rest of her tribe will bounce back and win the next challenge. Amy, Lydia and Stephenie share jokes about how bad the conditions are at camp, especially some of the less clean parts to living in the wilderness. Amy continues in her confessional talking about how she has virtually no outdoor experience, but will never give up.

Back at Nakúm, Bobby Jon Drinkard feels elated talking about the win at the Reward Challenge, talking about how he hasn't had that many victories in the game of Survivor, and it feels good to win a second challenge in a row. Brooke talks about how the tribe wants to build a better shelter and throw their new tarp over it, but they have to wait until the heat lowers, and that all the heat is taking its toll on the tribe as a whole. Brandon Bellinger talks about how they can't really jump in the water because of the alligators that might be in the water, and Cindy says much the same. Brandon continues with his confessional that he's never felt more alive than right now.

At Yaxhá, Brianna worries about her status on the tribe, so she begins doing more than her share of camp work and provide for the tribe. Stephenie compares their food to oatmeal, only less tasty and crunchier in spots. Rafe Judkins even speaks about how if they somehow put dirt in the corn mush, it would taste better because of the desire to eat something new. They find a termite's nest and Rafe plucks a couple up and eat them, much to Stephenie's outright disgust. Rafe proclaims that they actually taste good, and Gary joins in to eat some of them. While they don't taste great, Rafe says that "at least termites taste better than ants".

Over at Nakúm, discussions on where to place the tarp pick up. The men arrange the tarp into a "circus big top" as Margaret Bobonich calls it in her confessional, adding that she's not really impressed by the look of the tarp over their shelter. Bobby Jon and Judd talk about Margaret's bossiness while they go out to collect firewood.

Day 8[]

Tree Mail comes to the Nakúm camp after Danni Boatwright and Judd collect it, and Bobby Jon reads the message aloud. The two tribes begin to apply paint on themselves before heading out to the Immunity Challenge. Danni talks in confessional about how she is a huge fan of the local NFL team, the Kansas City Chiefs, and that putting on face paint is nothing new to her and she loves it. At Yaxhá, Brian overhypes the rest of the tribe, and Lydia speaks out about how important winning the Immunity Idol will be. Jeff calls the tribes in, and they're both fully decked out in face paint and feathers. The tribes will be playing an ancient variant of what appears to be basketball, which Jeff calls it courtball, the first tribe to five points wins Immunity. Groups of three are selected. The challenge is intense, and Jeff informs the tribe in the middle of the challenge that the temperature is currently 114 degrees Fahrenheit. Nakúm pull ahead 3-1, but Rafe and Jamie Newton score to tie the game, 3-3. Danni scores again to put Nakúm on match point. In the next round, due to Brianna's inaction, Yaxhá lost possession of the ball, and while seated on the netting over the ground, Danni shoots the ball into the hoop to win Immunity for Nakúm.

Yaxhá return defeated, and Stephenie feels frustrated by this point, having flashbacks of her time on the Ulong tribe. Amy shows her sprained foot, talking about how she rolled her ankle and that it's swelling, but she is being tough with it and not giving up, walking under her own power back from their dock back to camp. Jamie and Lydia talk about voting out Brianna, with Jamie talking about how in his mind that Brianna is all but gone by the time Yaxhá go to Tribal Council. Brianna talks about her suspicions that Lydia and Jamie would want her out, and that she's most likely the weak link in the tribe, but has no intention of giving up on herself.

Jeff Probst welcomes Yaxhá to Tribal Council, and begins by asking Stephenie about how familiar this is starting to feel. She answers by saying that it indeed does feel like a deja vu moment, and she hates coming to Tribal Council to vote someone out, and talking about her frustrations regarding the Immunity Challenge. Brianna and Lydia talk about their inefficiency at the challenge. Brian talks about how even though Nakúm is a more athletic tribe than they are, they're still not going to back down. Ami talks about her injured ankle to Jeff. Gary talks about how keeping the tribe athletically strong is important if they want to win challenges. Jeff closes discussions and the vote begins. Brianna's suspicions were confirmed this time, as she was voted out unanimously.

Challenges[]

Challenge: Blind Build
Scattered around the jungle are nine bundles of materials. One person would guide three groups of blindfolded players (each tied together, in two pairs and one group of three) to collect the bundles. After collecting the bundles, they must construct an archeological tent. The first tribe to complete the tent and get on their tribe mat wins.
Reward: Pillows, blankets, and tarp
Winner: Nakúm

Challenge: Holding Court
Tribes would compete on an elevated court playing Mayan Courtball. They would compete in threesomes to pass the ball to each other to shoot at a target on the other side of the court. If a competitor caught the ball, they couldn't walk; they had to pass. If they did walk, they had to give the ball to the other tribe. First tribe to five points wins.
Winner: Nakúm

Voting Confessionals[]

S11 lydia t
Lydia
(voting against Brianna) This is nothing personal, but we need a strong tribe to win these challenges, and we'll see you back home, homegirl.
S11 jamie t
Jamie
(voting against Brianna) Brianna, you fell off the net in the challenge. You leaned on the pole during the challenge. You were scared to pick up the ball in the challenge. I don't think you've played a contact sport in your entire life. You're a girly girl, and you need to go back to the shopping mall and leave the jungle.
S11 amy t
Amy
(voting against Brianna) My vote is for Brianna. It's based on a unified vote. But Brianna, you know as well as I know that we came into this right at the beginning with an alliance, and the fact that I'm voting out someone in my alliance brings me great concerns that there might be holes in our ship.
S11 rafe t
Rafe
(voting against Brianna) You're a wonderful person, but I think you and I both know that you're ready to go home.
S11 stephenie t
Stephenie
(voting against Brianna) Brianna, you are a sweet, genuine person, and I'm so sorry that it's your time to go. But I have to do what's right for this tribe right now. We gotta win immunity. I can't be on a losing streak anymore. I really liked getting to know you and hope we can hang on the outside. See 'ya.
S11 gary t
Gary
(voting against Brianna) Brianna, you're a great young girl. I just don't think this was your style of game. Best wishes.
S11 brianna t
Brianna
(voting against Lydia) Lydia, you have not once looked me in the eye when I've spoken to you, or even attempted at conversing when I start a conversation with you. It's either you or me tonight. I hope it's not me.
S11 brian t
Brian
(voting against Brianna) I'm sure I'm going to have a lot of sarcastic things to say about people throughout this game when I vote them out, but you're a sweetheart, Rinny. You really are, through and through. I'm only voting against you because you are the weakest link on the tribe; you don't give it your all - Lydia does.

Final Words[]

S11 brianna bw
Brianna
It was the survival of the fittest out there and I was the weakest link. You've got to be athletic to be out here. I gave it my all. I tried my hardest. I am an athletic person, but not as athletic as these people. These are strong people. I was only out here for eight days, but it was the best eight days of my life. The toughest, but the best.

Trivia[]

  • According to Brian Corridan, the Immunity Challenge was actually won by the tribe that scored ten points first, rather than the best of five matches.[2]
  • The episode title was said by Brandon Bellinger describing how he is tempted to take a swim in the alligator-infested lake.
