Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina is the third season of Survivor South Africa. The premiere aired on January 20, 2010.

In contrast to the previous two seasons, Santa Carolina featured an all-star cast of South African celebrities fighting to win money for their charities. The season saw two early quits as well as the rise of the series' first all-female alliance, which quietly took control of the post-merge game. In the end, 42 year-old exotic dancer GiGi van Schalkwyk defeated 42 year-old TV presenter Ashley Hayden in a 6-3 vote, winning the R1 million prize.

Production

After three years, Survivor South Africa returned, with Nico Panagio replacing Mark Bayly as the host.

The season was filmed between November and December 2009 on the small island of Santa Carolina, a member of the Bazaruto Archipelago off the southern coast of Mozambique. The celebrity castaways lived amongst white sand beaches, coral reefs and buildings left abandoned by the Mozambican Civil War, including a prison and a hotel.

The season was accompanied by web-exclusive clips, which included the Survivor South Africa version of the "Life at Ponderosa" series known as "Jury Duty".

The live season finale and reunion took place in M-Net's Studio 6 in Randburg and was attended by 240 guests. The set was recreated to look like the season's Tribal Council, which took days to construct.

Twists/Changes

• Celebrities: The cast consisted of South African celebrities battling for the prize of R1 million, half of which for a charity of their choice.
• Expanded Cast: For the first time in Survivor South Africa, the cast contained 18 castaways.
• Separate Maroonings: The contestants were divided in two groups. One group with seven castaways were marooned on the beach to start building the camp, while the other group, with the remaining eleven castaways were marooned at the desert, would get crates with items for the camp life. They would reunite later on Day 1.
• First Impressions: On Day 1, before reuniting with the other group, the eleven castaways that took the trek across the Bazaruto Dunes were instructed to vote for the two members they thought were the weakest of the group.
• One World: Before the tribes were divided, the sixteen contestants lived on the same beach until the two exiled contestants returned to pick tribes.
• Hidden Immunity Idol: One Hidden Immunity Idol was hidden in each camp. They must be played at Tribal Council before the votes were cast.
  • One Hidden Immunity Idol was also hidden on North Santa Carolina, where the two people voted out during the First Impressions twist were given the chance to find it.
• Schoolyard Pick: The two members voted as the weakest were isolated from the other castaways on what would later become Chibudu's camp. The next day, they were sent to meet the other players, where they would choose the tribes with a Schoolyard Pick.
• Exile Island: After a Reward Challenge, the winning tribe would send one member of the losing tribe to Exile Island, where they would stay until the next Immunity Challenge. The exiled castaway will be given the opportunity to look for a clue to the Hidden Immunity Idol buried back on their beach.
• Kidnapping: The person chosen to be sent to the Exile Island would choose someone of the other tribe to "replace" them on their tribe while they were out.
• Tribe Switch: At Day 13, the tribes were instructed to chose one ambassador to visit the other tribe and loot one item from the opposing camp. The ambassador will also "capture" one of their members to live with them from that time on; the captured member will have individual immunity at their first Tribal Council with their new tribe.
• Merge: The tribes merged on Day 15 with ten contestants remaining.
• Transferable Immunity Necklace: Beginning from this season, the winner of the Immunity Challenge reserved the right to transfer the Immunity Necklace to another player, keeping the recipient safe instead and leaving the original wearer vulnerable.
• Tiebreaker: In the event of a tie vote, the votes cast against the players in question from previous Tribal Councils will be taken into account. The castaway that had more votes would be eliminated from the game. In the event of being the first Tribal Council of the tribe or a tied number of votes, a tiebreaker challenge known as "The Skull" would take place. The castaways tied would count thirty seconds; the person who had the more accurate estimate wins, while the loser would be eliminated.
• Final Tribal Council Format: The Final Two faced an eight-member jury.
  • Public Jury Vote: After the Final Tribal Council, the public would vote for their favorite finalist. The finalist with more votes would get an extra vote to win.
