Survivor South Africa: Return of the Outcasts is the ninth season of Survivor South Africa.

The season featured twenty returning players from the previous seasons of the series. After 39 days, Dino Paulo defeated Shane Hattingh in a 7-2 vote to become the Sole Survivor.

Production

Similar to Immunity Island, the season was filmed locally, with health and safety protocols implemented to address the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Unlike previous seasons, this season had more episodes, with multiple episodes covering one round.

Twists/Changes

• Returning Players: A selected group of contestants from previous seasons of Survivor South Africa who had not reached the Final Tribal Council returned. The Masu tribe was comprised of former castaways who were eliminated after the merge, while the Yontau tribe was comprised of those who were eliminated pre-merge.
• Increased Prize Money: For this season, the winner received R2 million.
• The Outpost: Members of both tribes were sent to the Outpost to negotiate over additional camp supplies and a special one-time use Immunity Idol to be used at the next Tribal Council. The Outpost would be visited multiple times, where one or two castaways had a chance to receive clues and advantages.
• Diplomatic Immunity: Hidden at each camp is a Diplomatic Immunity. At any point if their tribe loses an Immunity Challenge, the castaway may invoke their Diplomatic Immunity by handing the bracelet to Nico, at the cost of that player transferring to the other tribe. Though there are two, only one Diplomatic Immunity can be played in the season.
• Hidden Immunity Idol: Hidden Immunity Idols are hidden around each camp site, with clues available to find while at camp or at the Outpost.
• Joint Tribal Council: On Day 19, both tribes were forced to attend Tribal Council as a group, voting out one member of the tribe that lost the immunity challenge.
• Tribal Council Pass: This advantage allows its owner to leave Tribal Council before the vote, effectively granting them immunity at the cost of their vote. This advantage can be played until there are seven players left and is transferable.
• 50/50 Coin: The player who receives the coin may use it at any Tribal Council up until there were 6 active players left. If flipped and landed on "safe" the player who used it became immune the same way a Hidden Immunity Idol would.
• Extra Vote: A castaway may vote twice at any Tribal Council until there were five players left.
