This is the season premiere of Survivor South Africa: Philippines.

Story[]

Day 1[]

Welcome to one of the most beautiful and exotic locations in the world, the Philippines! Thousands of islands connected by Pacific waters. Each one home to daze and forests, steaming with all kinds of creatures - both beautiful and dangerous! It is here that 18 South Africans have begun the adventure of a lifetime! They come from all walks of life: a mining technician, a pastor, an investment advisor, a social media advisor - starting the journey with only the clothes on their backs. These castaways will not only be subjected to nature's law, but also to each other's. First impressions are already forming. These castaways will have to outwit, outplay, and outlast one another. In the greatest game on Earth. 39 Days, 18 Castaways, 1 Survivor!

— Nico Panagio

Looking around, I'm reckon that I might be the youngest castaway around here. Look, if the people look at me and they think I'm this dumb blonde, I can show them dumb blonde. I will literally just be sitting at the beach, and just be looking like this. (mimics dumb face)

— Katinka

Coming into this game, I might be considered an underdog, because of my physical appearance. But don't be fooled by that, everything's up here. (taps head)

— Ace

I play to win. So, if you're gonna slow me done, if you're gonna get in my way - I'm just gonna have to cut you down.

— Ace

I'm not here to make friends. I'm here to tell lies to create havoc and absolute chaos, and to blindside people.

— Seamus

I've studied this game and every season I've watched was basically me doing my homework. To finally come to write the final exam, that's this exam right now. Immediately something that stands out is the man wearing a suit and tie [Marthunis]. He's either come here to play the game strategically, or he's just playing the game

— Tevin

This one lady [Palesa], she's looking like she's in this game, and I'm like yeah this woman looks like she's gonna be winning Survivor, she looks so intimidating.

— Katinka

I fell pregnant when I was in school, and wrote my exams still days before giving birth. Still finished school in record time and went on to go for all my dreams. So, Survivor's going to be a walk in the park.

— Palesa

People in my town calls me captain. People listen to me. People confide in me. And people speak to me. That is what I do. People trust me.

— Werner

I'm hoping in Survivor, they underestimate me. That is key. They need to underestimate me, they need to see short, chubby… They gotta think they can beat me.

— Jeanne

Nico welcomes the eighteen castaways to the Philippines! He separates them into two tribes. Mindanao, wearing blue, consists of: Jeanne, Katinka, Marthunis, Murishca, PK, Stacey-Lee, Tevin, Toni, and Werner. Luzon, wearing red, consists of: Ace, Annalize, Chane, Josie, Neil, Palesa, Seamus, Tom, and Vusi.

Nico asks Chane how she's feeling; she's very excited and wants to get started. He also asks Marthunis and Werner for their names. Werner mentions that his heart is about to explode. Nico comments that Murishca looks nervous; she responds that she was simply concerned he wouldn't pronounce her name correctly. Nico asks Tom what he's thinking; Tom responds that he's happy to not be the only bald person on his tribe, in reference to Neil.

My nerves are shattered. What am I thinking doing this? Can I do it?

— Chané

Being a mentor, was something that changed my life completely. It was one of the first steps towards me finding out that I'm different from everybody else. It's nothing for me to be under pressure, cause I've been under it my whole life.

— Marthunis

Fortunately, I've got a difficult name. So, I'm relying on people not to remember my name. When it comes to Tribal Council, they'll think, "Oh how to spell - Ugh, leave it!", go for the easy person.

— Murishca

I don't have the speed, but I think I've got the strength and the stamina to outlast the youngsters. Being old at 55, I think I have a little bit of wisdom to actually outthink some of them.

— Neil

The first thing that I grabbed was mask and a spearhead. And I think I can provide if I get the opportunity to.

— Tom

Nico introduces them to their first Reward Challenge. There are valuable items on the boat and each tribe has a station where they can only pick one of two options: fishing gear or chicken. They have two-minutes to salvage what they can, then head out to shore, where only one tribe can secure the bag of rice. Mindanao wins reward.

Everyone was just grabbing, everyone was throwing onto the wrong raft. It was just mayhem.

— Toni

I jumped on their raft and then had to ninja jump over to my raft. Crazy moments.

— Jeanne

I was thinking, gets some of the chicken, but my tribe went for the fishing gear so I had to compromise.

— Murishca

Coming here to try and be as competitive as I can be physically as a woman. There's nothing not intimidating by a male.

— Stacey-Lee

The Mindanao tribe arrived at camp and immediately got to work planning the shelter and finding the water well.

I won't be able to hide the fact that I'm loud and outspoken, so I'll probably move up into the leadership role very quickly.

— Marthunis

Who's this broad in a suit? What is he doing?

— Jeanne

I am a 24 year old medical doctor. My thing is to never expose my actual gameplay to anyone. I will not tell anyone the truth of what I'm actually thinking or what I really want to do in this game.

— Tevin

I studied to be a biokineticist, but I am a full-time pastor of a church. I will not disclose that to the contestants because they will butcher me. (laughs)

— Werner

They spot a snake in a tree, so against the wishes of his tribe, Marthunis takes it open himself to slaughter the snake with the machete.

I love snakes, but, I'm not sitting on the island and dying, I've got a family at home.

— Marthunis

"Man, look at me. Alpha male with my machete." Unnecessary.

— Jeanne

Tevin tells a lie to everybody else on the tribe that Marthunis found something on the boat and put it in his back pocket.

Right off the bat, Martunis makes me very suspicious. This could either be the way he's playing the game strategically. Maybe he thinks if he pisses us off, we'll keep him until the end. Or, maybe, he just doesn't interact well with others. To me, right now, he's enemy #1. He's got to go. So, I told every member of this tribe that Marthunis did find something and put it in his pocket. That's a lie - I didn't see him put anything into his back pocket. I need them to be as suspicious, if not more. They all really think he's got a clue or an idol right now, so, it's working really well.

— Tevin

The boys are taking charge of building this shelter. That's absolutely no problem. We'll focus on other stuff.

— Katinka

I'm literally gonna come across as a man-hater on this show. Oh well.

— Jeanne

Katinka tells Werner and Marthunis that the boys need to give them orders, like to sweep the camp. An annoyed Jeanne tells her men don't need to tell her anything, they don't run the place. While the men argue over the shelter, Jeanne, Stacey-Lee, and Toni discuss the men. Jeanne instructs them to be weary if the guys asks them to vote out a woman.

Werner asks for the tribe's permission to go gather materials since there are enough people on the shelter. This is actually a cover for him to search for an idol. Nobody followed him, so he searched into trees and on the third one found a clue that informed him an idol will be hidden at a challenge. He will know which one if the treemail says "Balance".

I want to get stuff so I can see if there should be something on this island, like an idol or a clue. I don't know what they're doing, but nobody's following me, so I started digging around one tree, another tree. The third tree I digged, there in a little pouch, was some kind of letter. There's a picture of a platform, and underneath, there will be an idol hidden. If treemail comes with a message that says, "Balance", then I know that that is a challenge that I need to be away.

— Werner

The Luzon tribe arrived to camp.

I'm just elated. I wish I could just phone my wife and say, "Baby, you would not believe where I am." It's insane!

— Tom

First day on Survivor is a lot like losing your virginity. You know, hell of a nervous, but mostly excited, and the only thing on your mind is you hope you last longer than you thought.

— Seamus

The tribe started planning the shelter. Tom joked about not wanting to be the boss, but he is clearly taking charge with camp life.

We went straight to planning.

— Vusi

Top dog. Well, thinks he's top dog, definitely top.

— Seamus

I just see alpha males and I'm here like (chuckles) you know? But it's fine. Dynamites come in small packages.

— Ace

Ace is a total misfit in the game. I don't know what skills he brings. I haven't seen anything yet.

— Neil

Tom is definitely taking charge, because he knows more, and everyone is looking to him for his advice.

— Chané

Josie took Ace down to the water well and she told him that she wanted to go to the merge with him, and potentially through to the end. Ace was content with the plan.

What I like about Ace, is that he just seems like he's a really down to Earth guy. And I think that I'm a good judge of character. The both of us are the only people that we both said, "you are the person that is my #1 ally?" He's got huge potential to make it to the merge, if he can just get on top of the nerves and sort out his emotions.

— Josie

Tom sneaked up on Annalize and scared her while she was collecting palm fronds.

What I love about Tom is that he makes us laugh, the whole time. The silliest jokes.

— Annalize

Annalize is ready to cook food, but needs the fire to be made. Seamus went off into the woods with Josie. Josie told Seamus about her personal life.

Seamus for me, is playing an individual game already. He's moving aside. There is some heavy lifting to be done. And he should play his part instead of just constantly disappearing.

— Neil

I really like his energy, I think he's a good guy. So, him and I bonded, but it's early day.

— Josie

I'm not here to make friends. I don't care about what they do for a living or how many kids they have. I don't give a (chuckles)… a rats, whatever.

— Seamus

Seamus talked to Annalize by the well that they should vote based on strength, but to wait until after the challenge to do more strategizing.

I don't trust Seamus, but, saying that, I'm definitely his friend… for now.

— Annalize

Seamus talks to Vusi about voting Ace to keep the tribe strong.

And if he [Ace] does have his name on the chopping block, and I manage to blindside someone else and save him, then I'm guaranteed his vote at the next tribal. I think every villain needs a minion. And I think Ace will be the first one.

— Seamus

I'm feeling very anxious, because man, this is too early. It's the first day!

— Vusi

Back at Mindanao, Jeanne argues with Marthunis about using too much bamboo. Katinka is annoyed at all the arguing. Stacey-Lee is worried that it's so late and they don't have a shelter yet. Marthunis expresses discomfort at the idea of cuddling with somebody tonight, so Jeanne jokes about how she will be snuggling with him.

At night time, Marthunis starts vomiting and has a headache. Tevin says he's fine, but is dehydrated, and therefore lacking energy.

I actually can't explain to you how dark it is when night falls. We don't have a fire, we weren't prepared, we didn't have our stuff around, there was stuff everywhere. We were tripping over things.

— Jeanne

So, the worst night of my life is starting to happen. This headache is not going away. I start vomiting. If I have to make it to the next night, they're gonna find my corpses.

— Marthunis

If Marthunis was a patient in a hospital right now, we'd treat him as a green patient, because he's stable. There's nothing wrong with him. Right now, he's stable, he's fine, but he's dramatic. (chuckles)

— Tevin

Day 2[]

At this moment, I'm not even thinking about winning anymore. Let me just survive this day. Hopefully, there's no challenge, cause I'm going to be stuffed.

— Marthunis

Tevin talked to PK about the previous night with Marthnus being sick. Tevin mentions that it was suspicious that Marthunis suddenly was fine once Tevin checked him. The tribe gets treemail for the next challenge.

Ropes and sticks is what you'll need,

The key is locked away.

To win immunity and some speed, Make some fire to stay.

— Treemail

I'm very shocked at the amount of knowledge here other castaways have got. I think I've probably last with the amount of knowledge about Survivor.

— Marthunis

Jeanne and Stacey-Lee were the only ones with fire-making experience, so they had to step up for the role.

I promised myself that when I got to Survivor, I would never put my hand up to be that person that's gonna end the challenge.

— Jeanne

And surprise, surprise - Jeanne and I are the only ones that have really practiced making fire with a flint.

— Stacey-Lee

"I'll do it!" (raises hand, displays frustration)

— Jeanne

The Luzon also gets treemail and immediately choose Tom and Ace for fire-making.

This is an ideal opportunity for me to prove myself to my tribe members, because up until now, they've seen me as an underdog - the weakest guy on the team.

— Ace

The people we chose for the fire-making challenge was no mistake. If we lose the challenge, the tribe will always turn to those people and go, "You messed it up!"

— Seamus

Ace, totally unprepared for this game. Fire's one of the most difficult things to do, but confidently says he can make fire. Sit down; go ahead, expose yourself!

— Neil

Being a survivalist adds a hell of a lot of pressure in this game. If you're the person he knows, then show us.

— Tom

At the Immunity Challenge, Luzon revealed they didn't get enough sleep and Mindanao revealed they bonded, but didn't have shelter or fire. Nico gave instructions that four tribe members (two at a time) will go out to the floating structure in the water to receive bags and sticks. The next two tribe members will use the sticks and rope to construct a pole. One person will take the pole and use it to retrieve a key. Unlock the cage to get access to the flint. The two fire-makers will use the flint to make a fire to burn through a rope. They can then light their torch and light their flag to win immunity. The reward is a fire-making kit. Mindanao won immunity.

Today, I was handed my own butt on a platter by two women who beat me in making fire. It is most definitely a humbling experience.

— Tom

Once Mindanao got back to camp, Jeanne maintained the positive moral on the tribe by talking about their challenge performance.

I don't think I've ever been more ecstatic with anything in my life.

— Jeanne

I think Jeanne is starting to really think she controls this tribe. Thinking that the excitement, the ego can really get fed. It just went even higher. Like, literally, shot up through the roof.

— Tevin

At Luzon, Neil campaigns for Ace to go to Vusi and Tom since Ace is a hindrance around camp. He also expresses this to Annalize, Josie, and Chané together. Seamus talks to Tom and agree they would follow that plan.

From the beginning, Ace hasn't really shown that he's definitely in the game, and actually has got the capability within the game to show it today. Not really making much of a contribution, so he's a target for tonight's Tribal Council.

— Neil

After discussing with everybody, our plan foreword is tonight at Tribal Council, it will be Ace voted off, and then this team needs to build itself again.

— Tom

Chané brought up to Seamus and Josie at the well that Ace is very trustworthy and shouldn't go. Seamus felt it should be a threat since not all challenges will be physical. Annalize asked who he was thinking of, and Seamus brings up Tom to go. Chané was resistant to the plan, but went along with it.

At tribal coming soon, it's interesting how everything's sort of just initiated. I've had a couple of conversations myself. His Tom with a blindside. He's a strong competitor, he's a very likeable guy. Socially, he's the best in our tribe, and I want to execute that as soon as possible.

— Seamus

I'm in an alliance currently with Seamus, and Annalize, and um Josie, and we're voting Tom, and… I see Tom as a friend, and I don't feel it is time at all.

— Chané

Seamus informs Vusi that the plan has changed to Tom. Seamus goes to Palesa and Ace to let them know that Ace was a target, but he wants Tom gone instead. Palesa was already thinking Tom.

Maybe Tom could be getting a slight blindside, if he really believes we'll be voting Ace.

— Palesa

Seamus reassured me that he was with Palesa, Vusi, Annalize, Chane, and Josie, against Tom. 7 against 2 - Tom and Neil being the two. Remember this game is so unpredictable that you might think you know what's going on, but something else might be brewing.

— Ace

Stacey-Lee is hoping that the Mindanao tribe becomes good at fishing in a few days. Jeanne wants to make fire, catch a fish, treat herself, and then win Survivor.

Marthunis asks the boys if they're going to use a stack of bamboo sitting around. Tevin responded that they were, which is why they left it there in the morning. PK frustratingly asks why he wasted his time if they were going to use another wood and walks off. PK complains to Stacey-Lee that he spent two hours working on the shelter and that Marthunis is not the mayor around camp. He wishes they lost the challenge so they could've sent Marthunis home.

This tribe is good, but it's like water heating up, and at some stage it's going to fizzle and boil.

— Werner

PK throws his toys up and literally throws the hammer away. Storms off, and it looks like he goes and cries behind the tree.

— Marthunis

While Marthunis is out swimming, Tevin gets the group to search Martunis' bag for an idol clue where they found a typed-up speech for him to use at the Final 3.

Although I fabricated that story, that Marthunis did find something, I still thought he may have a clue - so, I wanted to make sure.

— Tevin

We found a typed up speech he'll be using in the Final 3.

— Toni

I immediately felt bad about that.

— Tevin

I do feel bad about going through his properly. Only because we didn't find anything. Would I do it again? Yes, I would.

— PK

Mark Burnett created Survivor to be a family program. I don't think when he said Outwit, Outplay & Outlast that he meant deceiving people, lying to them and backstabbing them.

I want to help create what my and other children can watch. Survivor is the same as real life. It's not necessary going through life deceiving people, lying to them and backstabbing them to get to where you want to be.

My wife and son is the most important thing in life to me. We've never slept one night without each other until the interview and then the next time on the show. I didn't leave my wife and son to come second and be able to tell other people I was on the show. I'm the one who takes my son for the first hour or two when he wakes up in the morning. I am the one who baths him. I am home for a few reasons, but one being so I can kiss my wife and son throughout.

Again, I didn't leave to make friends, be on TV, and say I was part of Survivor. I've watched from the first show and always wanted to be apart of it. I waited years for it to come to SA. If it was any other time in my life. 2 years, 5 or 10 ago, I would've done it only for fun. This time I did it for the money.

I'll support my mother who gave her life slaving in a kitchen, baking cakes for 12 years - sometimes going three days without barely sleeping, working physically. It's now my turn to help her. I have the best wife in the world, the most amazing child, and that is why I did this show.

I started preparing and playing for the game before our first interview. Professional sports players go to play their sport's match, they focus only on the game. They don't think of other things or let anything distract them. That's what I've been doing for over a month. I have been preparing for Survivor in every possible way - making sure that I run through every scenario possible through in my head and how I can handle it. I didn't get to the Final 2 accidentally. I outwit, outlast, and outplayed everyone to the best of my abilities.

I'm not only asking for you to vote for me because I deserve it, but also because I did not deceive, backstab, or lie to you and therefore you have no reason NOT to vote for me. The same reason why I'm in the final is the same reason why you should vote for me. Because just like you had no reason to vote me off, you have no reason not to vote for me to win.

— Martunis' F2 Speech

When Marthunis got back, he saw that his bag was moved and opened. He told the guys that they should at least place his bag back if they're going to go through it, but PK played dumb and Tevin apologized. Werner came to the realization that he needed to dispose of his clue or they would find it. He went out to the beach to eat it.

When I got back to the camp, I realized that my bag wasn't in the same position it was, and the lid was off. So, I went to the guys and making the joke, I said. Are you happy now to know that I don't have the idol?

— Marthunis

I had a shock, because if they were going through my bag, they would find the clue. To protect myself from a bomb exploding here, I want to get rid of that clue. If I have to eat it, I'll eat it. I'm not going back to the camp with that clue, that clue does not exist.

— Werner

At Luzon, Chané talks to Annalize about giving Seamus the blindside he craves. She wants the two of them, Neil, Tom, and one more person to blindside Seamus. She needs Annalize to pull in Ace. Annalize brought up the plan to Ace, who was feeling skeptical about Seamus.

So Annalize is with me on this blindside. If she gets Ace to come with us, we are five. And then, we get Seamus out. And that's the blindside that he was craving and bragging about the whole time.

— Chané

Basically, right now: first, find out if Annalize could convince Ace to come join us to vote Seamus off. If she did, I need to go out and tell Neil and Tom, and tell them the plan, because I don't know when Tribal Council begins.

— Chané

Annalize wants Seamus gone. Just because he is a strategic threat in this game. Remember timing is everything and if you give your moves away too soon, you will be falling for a blindside.

— Ace

Chané told Tom about Seamus' plan to blindside him and lets him know that she is working to save him, but he has to vote for Seamus. Tom immediately goes to confront Seamus who admits to the blindside plan.

My name became the stronger candidate than what Ace is. I didn't see that coming, but that's Survivor - you never see it coming. And, if you do, you're stupid to sit around and do nothing about it.

— Tom

As soon as I realized that Tom knew, it sunk in. And that first feeling of betrayal came about. Now, that Tom knows that I'm coming for him, I have to completely change my plan.

— Seamus

Seamus tells Josie, Ace, Palesa, and Vusi that Tom is gunning for him and that Annalize and Chané aren't to be trusted anymore. Chané, Annalize, Neil, and Tom agree that their top-priority is to flip Ace.

Chané campaigns to Ace that Seamus needs to go. Neil points out to Ace that he's now the most powerful person in the game, the swing vote. Seamus tells Ace that he will be heartbroken if he's out first, Ace says he doubts it.

Tom, I'm annoyed with him right now, because he blabbed my plan to Seamus.

— Chané

Our first Tribal Council, the first person voted out which initially was supposed to me, which shifted to Tom, and now shifted to Seamus.

— Ace

Late at night, Tom catches Ace crying and takes the time to comfort him, reminding him that it's just a game.

I wake up early hours in the morning and everybody else is sleeping except for Ace. That man was in tears; he was so torn between what he said to Seamus and what he said to me. If he was just here to play a cunning and devious game, that would've have got him so much. That got him because he's a decent man.

— Tom

Tom's a good guy, and voting him out is going to be difficult.

— Ace

Day 3[]

Last night, I was a bit worried. Right now, our tribe is divided into two alliances and Ace is in the middle.

— Ace

Literally the ace that I don't have up my sleeve is Ace, but then, neither does Seamus.

— Tom

When I vote for Tom tonight, it's pure strategy. He's a threat, he's gotta go, first one, out.

— Seamus

I'm determined to make it tonight to Tribal Council, I think I've got a lot more to show and a lot more to give. All I need is a few more days.

— Tom

Josie campaigns to Ace that Tom needs to go because he's unpredictable, whereas they know where Seamus' head is at. She explains how Seamus will not be targeting Ace as he'll be too busy targeting the alpha males. Ace was certain who he was voting for yesterday, but now is uncertain.

I think Ace is someone who's in a bit of a moral dilemma. I'm hoping that I can help him stay with the plan for my own game, but also for his. I think it's a silly move if he goes over to Tom's side, because he's going to be at the bottom of that alliance.

— Josie

I'm going to go with the person who I think is the biggest threat to my game at the moment. Unfortunately, it is going to hurt people. It is going to maybe separate people from me. But, it's a choice and a chance that I'm willing to take.

— Ace

At Tribal Council, Palesa says the mosquitoes are the toughest thing about the experience thus far. Tom says it's very tough out on the island. Chané says that everybody is nervous since losing. Seamus says the peaceful tribe spirit is gone. Annalize says that it was a tough decision, but her group has reached a person. Ace says that the past day has been rough for him and he's been paranoid and confused.

Neil's priority in playing the game was to keep the tribe strong, and he calls out Seamus for being the one to create tribal divisions, and now he understands the tribe dynamics much more thoroughly than before. Seamus explains how the only way to build trust is at Tribal Council. Tom's criteria for voting will be trust and honor. At the voting, Tom received four votes from Seamus, Palesa, Vusi, and Josie for being a social threat. But Seamus was ultimately sent packing with five votes from Annalize, Chané, Neil, Tom, and swing-vote Ace for overplaying.

Challenges[]

Challenge: Race to Shore
Both tribes will have two minutes to collect supplies from the bangka before evacuating onto a raft. They will paddle to shore and race to untie a bag of rice hanging from a wooden structure. The first tribe to retrieve their bag of rice wins.
Reward: A bag of rice.
Winner: Mindanao

Challenge: Breakout
Four tribe members, two at a time, would race out into the water to collect fire-making supplies, sticks, and string from a large frame. Once both pairs have brought the supplies back to shore, two more tribe members would use the sticks and string to fashion a long pole. One member would then use that pole to retrieve a key from within a bamboo cage. The key would be used to unlock the cage and retrieve a flint, allowing the final two tribe members to use their supplies to build a fire. Once the fire is high enough to burn through a rope, they will light a torch with their fire and set the season logo alight. The first pair to burn the logo wins the challenge for their tribe.
Reward: A fire-making kit.
Winner: Mindanao

(voting against Seamus) You can't one moment say you have my back, and then the next minute, you throw my name out to be eliminated. That does not work for me.

Seamus
(voting against Tom) Your social game is just too good.
ZAS6 ace t
Ace
(voting against Seamus) Sorry, bud. Definitely a tough decision, but I believe you came out running, instead of crawling and then walking. It was just a bit too quit and you ruined it for yourself. I wish you all the best.

Final Words[]

ZAS6 seamus bw
Seamus
I'm a huge fan of this show. Um, to be out first is honestly heartbreaking. I think I just came in a little bit hard, played the game too strongly. I should've pulled the reins back from the beginning and realize that, you know, these people don't want to play the game. I was outplayed, um, outwitted, and obviously outlasted.
