Survivor South Africa: Malaysia is the second season of Survivor South Africa. The premiere aired on August 22, 2007.
With a larger cast than its predecessor, many of the sixteen new contestants boasted explosive personalities, leading to frequent interpersonal clashes throughout the game. Despite the high tensions, the Iban Alliance managed to take decisive control after the merge and produced both members of the Final Two. In the end, policewoman Lorette Mostert defeated maritime lawyer Grant Clark in a 3-2 vote to become the second Ultimate Survivor and win the R1 million prize.
After this season, the Survivor South Africa series went on a two-year hiatus before the production of Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina in November 2009.
Production[]
Many changes were announced for the second season by M-Net, which airs the show. This included the addition of two contestants, a shorter filming period (27 days), the change in location (Johor, Malaysia), and a pre-show vote by South African citizens to choose one of the contestants. However, the show's format remained much the same, with the prize set at 1,000,000. Mark Bayly hosted this season.
The application process ended on 2 April 2007. According to M-Net's website, two thirds of the entries in 2007 were from males. The percentage of applicants in the 40-59 age group was also higher than in 2006, and the 20 oldest applicants were 77 years old. This may quell another concern that emerged in the first season: that all of the contestants had backgrounds that were too similar. The 16th contestant, Lorette Mostert, was voted in by South Africans via M-Net's website between 23–30 April 2007. Filming began in mid-May and ended in June. The show was initially broadcast 22 August – 14 November 2007.
Twists/Changes[]
- Shorter Game: The game lasted 27 days, 2 days shorter than the previous season. This would be followed by the subsequent seasons.
- Tribe Division: The sixteen castaways were randomly divided into two tribes, one of eight and one of seven, with one castaway being exiled.
- Exile Island: At the start of the game, the castaways were dropped in the sea by a boat. They would have to swim until the shore, where they would find podiums on which they would stand. The last three to reach the shore would have to standing on smaller poles, with the first person to fall being exiled until after the first Immunity Challenge, when they would join the winning tribe.
- Tribe Switch: On Day 8, a tribe switch occurred, shuffling the thirteen remaining contestants into Bajau, containing seven members, and Iban, containing six.
- Merge: The tribes merged on Day 18 with eight contestants remaining.
- Tiebreaker: In the event of a tie, there would be no revote. Instead, the tied contestants would immediately proceed to the tiebreaker challenge, which was a timekeeping challenge. The person who estimated 30 seconds more accurately would stay in the game, eliminating their opponent.
- Elimination Challenge: At the final four, an endurance challenge took place, where the first person to bail out would be permanently eliminated.
- Final Tribal Council Format: Two finalists faced a jury of five. The jurors individually addressed the finalists.
