Survivor Italia is the first season of the Italian version of Survivor.
After 43 days in Bocas del Toro, Panama, Milica Miletić defeated Marco Cimnaghi in a unanimous 7-0 jury vote to become the Sole Survivor.
Production[]
Due to the success of Survivor: Borneo, Italia 1 took interest in producing an Italian version of the Survivor format, which would closely mirror that of Survivor: Borneo.
The season was filmed across 43 days on the Zapatillas Islands[2] in the Bocas del Toro archipelago of Panama and later broadcast on the Italian network Italia 1. The prize for the winner was 500,000,000 lire (equivalent to roughly US$400,000 in 2023). The on-location part of the series was hosted by journalist Pietro Suber, whereas the talk show segment was hosted by a second journalist, Benedetta Corbi.
Due to low ratings and controversy, the series was not renewed for a second season. Some attributed the series' low ratings to the show's poor format: the first half of each episode was dedicated to the events taking place on location, whereas the second half was devoted to a talk show discussing the events of the episode, designed to make the show feel live. This was in response to the success of Grande Fratello, the Italian version of reality TV show Big Brother, which was filmed live. As a result of the low ratings following the first episode, the last six episodes were combined to make three episodes.[2] One major controversy included attempts to leak spoilers to the media, though at least one of these reports was found to be untrue.[3] A second controversy came in the form of a lawsuit by LAV, an Italian animal rights group, concerned over the airing of the castaways' slaughter of a chicken.[2]
Several years after Survivor Italia aired, contestant Franco Mancini filed for compensation against fellow castaway Samuele Saragoni after the latter referred to Franco as a "pedophile" in an episode. This was apparently in response to his behaviour on the show towards young women, and according to Franco, he was subjected to teasing and harassment after the epithet was aired. Franco requested compensation from Samuele and the director of Italia 1 at the time of the show's airing, Stefano Magnaghi, as Franco believed the statement could have been cut from the episode. The Court of Rieti dismissed the lawsuit. The Court of Appeal in Rome rejected an appeal in June 2008. After a further appeal, the Court of Cassation upheld the ruling, stating that the context in which the statement was made was not reasonable grounds for defamation or offence. The court noted that reality shows are designed to cause conflict between participants and believed that the comment, as well as the notoriety gained from it, was a consequence of voluntarily appearing on the show. They argued that these risks were known to Franco.[4]
Format[]
- Tribe Composition: The sixteen castaways were divided into two tribes of eight.
- Merge: The merged tribe was comprised of ten members.
- Final Tribal Council Format: Two finalists faced a jury of seven.
