Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X is the 33rd season of Survivor.

The season used a variant of the tribe division twist previously employed in Survivor: Nicaragua.

Ultimately, the season was won by Adam Klein in the fifth unanimous vote in the series. He received all 10 jury votes, defeating fellow finalists Hannah Shapiro and Ken McNickle.

Development

Filming for the season was schedule to start in mid-March 2016, but had to be delayed by two weeks because of the effects of a cyclone that passed through the Fiji islands. The cyclone destroyed challenge props and the newly-built Tribal Council set, with the production team having "to scramble in two weeks to rebuild everything". During the peak of the typhoon (Day 2), the castaways were evacuated from their beaches and were sequestered in a barren room located at base camp until the cyclone subsided. The survivors returned to their camps nine hours later.

The pre-jury trip took place in Australia.

Twists/Changes

• Millennials vs. Gen X: The 20 castaways will be divided into two tribes based on their age. The Vanua tribe will hold the millennials, while the Takali tribe will hold the Gen X castaways.
• Tribe Expansion: As in Survivor: Cambodia, a third tribe will be introduced at some point in the pre-merge stage of the game. The Ikabula tribe will wear green.
• Legacy Advantage: While the tribes were allowed to grab supplies for the game, an envelope containing the Legacy Advantage was up for grabs. It would grant its holder an advantage in the game, given that he or she makes it to Day 36. If he or she is eliminated before Day 36, the advantage must be willed to another player. It was revealed that the Legacy Advantage could be used for immunity at the Day 36 Tribal Council.
• 13-Person Merge: As was the case in Cambodia, there will be another merge involving the final 13. All three post-expansion tribes will merge into one.
• Reward Steal: The right to steal one reward from another player was up for grabs at the merged tribe camp.

Season Summary

The 20 new castaways were initially divided into tribes based on generation: Millennials vs. Gen X. The Gen X tribe (Takali) was fractured between two alliances — one led by Paul Wachter, and the other by David Wright, while the Millennials tribe (Vanua)'s majority was run by Jay Starrett and Michelle Schubert. With 16 players remaining, the castaways were divided into three tribes, during which Millennial outsiders Adam Klein and Zeke Smith worked with the Gen X-ers against the majority Millennial alliance.

The four initial alliances regrouped at the merge: the core Millennial alliance; the Millennial outsider alliance of Adam, Hannah Shapiro, and Zeke; Chris Hammons' alliance; and David and Ken McNickle's alliance. While the latter three alliances initially formed a majority coalition, it eventually splintered as former Gen X distrust resurfaced, followed by David and Zeke targeting each other. Zeke rallied together the remnants of Chris's alliance and the core Millennial alliance, while Adam and Hannah joined David's alliance; David's alliance ultimately won out, and Adam, David, Hannah, and Ken were able to eliminate all others.

With four players remaining, Adam convinced Hannah and Ken to eliminate David for being the largest strategic threat remaining. At the Final Tribal Council, Adam's loyalty yet willingness to eliminate threats was rewarded over Hannah's strategically-hindering neuroticism and Ken's unwavering insistence on loyalty; that, coupled with the revelation that his mother had Stage IV lung cancer, led the jury to unanimously vote him as the Sole Survivor.
