Secrets and Lies and an Idol Surprise is the ninth episode of Survivor: Guatemala.
Story[]
Night 21[]
Xhakúm return from Tribal Council, and Bobby Jon Drinkard and Jamie Newton, to nobody's surprise, are arguing once again over what happened at Tribal Council. Bobby Jon speaks in confessional about how classless Jamie has been, and how badly he wants Jamie out of the game. Judd Sergeant and Rafe Judkins do their best to calm the situation down, and eventually it ends in a handshake and a truce.
Day 22[]
When the sun rises, Lydia Morales has prepared breakfast, and Stephenie LaGrossa talks with her alliance about focusing the vote on either Bobby Jon, Gary Hogeboom, or Danni Boatwright, with Judd stating that if the tables were turned, it'd be the same scenario playing out. Gary, in his confessional, recalls a time in the NFL when he and the Dallas Cowboys were 20 points down against the Detroit Lions, but came back and helped his team win the game, and he feels this situation in Survivor is just as crucial.
The Reward Challenge is about to begin, and Jeff Probst calls everyone in. The challenge today is a test of proficiency with an ancient Mayan weapon: the atlatl. Each castaway will throw an arrow using the atlatl at a target, and the closest to the pole in the center wins Reward, as well as a clue to the Hidden Immunity Idol. Judd launches a very good arrow to begin the challenge, and no one else could get closer than the 7 ft mark Judd made, winning steak and lobster and the clue. Jamie does show some heart for his previous actions, and volunteers to take the last place reward. The tribe then all go to a makeshift Guatemalan eatery, where they enjoy the various meals they each won. Gary jokingly stares at Judd as Judd eats, and Judd cracks a smile and says that Gary's killin' him.
The tribe return to camp at night, with Judd completely inebriated. Bobby Jon finds a decently sized felled tree, and although Judd tries to help lift it he ends up falling down. They do eventually bring it back to their campsite and the tribe go to sleep.
Day 23[]
The sun rises with Bobby Jon collecting firewood, and Judd realizes he threw up on a corner of the shelter. He goes to Stephenie and shows her his clue, but Stephenie tells him not to show it to her in front of anyone. Judd reads the clue, and he learns that the Hidden Immunity Idol is not buried, nor is it on the ground, meaning that it could be in a tree. Judd does, however, go to the other tribe members and informs them of what he's read, though he doesn't want to give the clue away. However, he tells them that the idol IS on the ground, which contradicts what Judd knows about where the idol is. Judd gives a confessional while he smokes the clue like a cigar after lighting one end of on it on fire.
Day 24[]
Rafe and Jamie talk about where the idol could possibly be, and they also cut a deal to go to the Final 4 together, each of them taking an alliance partner with them. Rafe, however, talks in confessional about how wary he is with aligning with Jamie. Jamie goes to Gary and tells him that the plan is to vote out Bobby Jon, and Gary makes him swear an oath on his word that it's the case. Even Stephenie is getting a little worried about Jamie and his paranoia.
Tree Mail arrives at camp, and while it talks about the upcoming Immunity Challenge, it also states that the whoever is voted out next will be the first member of the jury. Enclosed with Tree Mail is a scale replica of the challenge, and Gary goes out and tests his balance at one of the narrow pathways of the Mayan pyramid. The tribe goes to the Immunity Challenge, where Jeff explains the rules. Gary has a slight lead to begin, as does Rafe. Gary makes it to the second round, as do Jamie, Rafe, and Stephenie. Rafe and Jamie advance to the final round. Jamie makes a blinding pace on the rope bridge, with Rafe struggling a little but staying close to Jamie's pace. Suddenly, Rafe goes head over heels while trying to keep his balance, causing him to dunk his head into the water and flipping himself over and into the water, drawing laughter from the onlooking tribemates. Jamie then coasts to the end and wins the Immunity Necklace.
The tribe return to camp from the Immunity Challenge, and Stephenie talks in confessional that, although they wished to blindside Jamie, Jamie ended up winning Immunity, and so the plan shifts to one of the old members of Yaxhá, specifically Gary, which she says is the most dangerous of the three to keep around. Gary, however, while stating he's got a 33% chance of going home at Tribal Council, he simply doesn't want to give up hope. Assuming that everyone is deceiving him, he goes off into the woods to look for the idol. Jamie, Judd and Bobby Jon talk a little bit about Tribal Council. He warns them about how dangerous Stephenie is, and in confessional, Bobby Jon talks about how Judd and Jamie told him that they aren't going to vote for him. Rafe and Stephenie talk about how incredible it would be if Gary had found the idol.

“ | I think it's pretty amazing that Judd told everyone about the clue and that the idol was on the ground, and, uhh, I saw him back there and he was looking in the trees. It's pretty interesting. If it's on the ground, I wonder why he's lookin' in the trees, so there's no doubt in my mind that Judd is lying. I won't be lookin' on the ground. | ” |
At Tribal Council, Jeff greets the tribe and asks them first about trust. Danni talks about how tough it can be to discern who to trust and who can be trusted. Rafe agrees with Danni. Jeff asks Gary if it's possible to lie in this game without breaking a moral code. Gary answers by saying that each tribe member is different and there's no rule against lying to others in this game. Asked whether he has told any, Gary plainly responds "No." Judd also says he hasn't, at least not yet. Before the vote, Jeff asks Jamie about his Immunity Necklace, and Jamie chooses to keep it. Jeff also tells the tribe that if any of them have found the Hidden Immunity Idol that now is the time to play it if he or she chooses to. Suddenly, Gary stands up after fiddling in his pockets, to which Stephenie immediately exclaims "Oh my God! Gary!" The rest of the tribe congratulate him on finding it as he presents it to Probst. Jeff states that Gary is now also safe from the vote, which Jeff says that it's time to do. With Jamie and Gary both immune from the vote, the plan shifted to an unfortunate target, and Bobby Jon would be voted out, 6-2-1, becoming the first member of the jury.
