Proving that brawn is not the only way onto the Champions tribe, Sam's outstanding intellectual accomplishments will have him ahead of the game.

A boy genius, Sam is a top astrophysicist and a robotics and software engineer who knows 14 programming languages. He's also an astronomer and has won the Bok Prize, the most prestigious award for masters students who have impressed the Astronomical Society of Australia.

Sam is currently completing his Doctorate of Philosophy and has had 16 academic works published. He's been invited to universities around the world to lecture and has been impressing professional industry leaders at each destination.

"Naïve statistics say it's unlikely that I will win but I'm going to try! Stranger things have happened before and it would be pretty cool for a smart nerdy kid to take out the prize."

Hoping to make himself useful at camp by making shelters and fire, Sam is planning to be an integral part of his tribe not by winning challenges but by supporting his friends and being himself saying, "It'll probably be a mistake but I want to be me. I've been working out but I don't imagine I'll get to the point where I'll be a challenge beast like other players will.

If he makes it to the end, Sam isn't going to forget his roots.

"I've been a student my entire life, always scraping by. If I win, the title will be enough but I would use the prize money to buy myself a car so I can actually get around. Plus help some of my mates and my family."[1]

Going into a tribe with several athletes, Sam knew that he might have a tough time adjusting at first. Though he originally worked with Monika and Russell, that was short lived and he instead became a part of a core alliance that included Mat, Steve, and Sharn, while also remaining close to Lydia. Though Sam sat out of a few tribal challenges, he played an integral role in others, primarily puzzles. He also became known for his humorous comments made during challenges and Tribal Council. Sam's main strategic focus was flushing idols, which he demonstrated when targeting Shane despite Moana being ill. He ultimate did get his way that night as Shane played her idol and the tribe voted Moana out after convincing her not to quit. After the swap, Sam was separated from good friend Lydia but was left as third in command of his original alliance with Mat and Steve. They recruited Shane and the swapped Contenders Shonee and Tegan to blindside rival alliance member Jackie. This iteration of the Champions tribe struggled in challenges since Lydia was now on the Contenders and was leading that tribe to victory. After that vote, Sam was adamant that a contender needed to go next despite the threat of Brian flipping. This would come to fruition as Tegan was the next to be voted out. The Champions tribe won the following immunity challenge to snap their losing streak, ensuring Sam entered the merge with an 8-4 original tribe advantage. Cracks continued to form though as Shane, Mat, and Steve pushed to blindside Lydia. Sam reluctantly voted along with this plan, but expressed his frustrations to Benji and Robbie, telling them he would be willing to work with them in the future. After Robbie left during the following vote, Sam talked to Monika about joining the Contenders in blindsiding Mat, and Sharn was considering doing so as well. Mat would go on to win the immunity challenge, and despite an initial attempt to target Steve, that plan quickly fell apart after Sam told Mat that he told Lydia she was in trouble the night she went home. Mat shifted his focus from Benji to Sam, and even Benji was unsure about Sam at this point. Benji and Sam were left with no other choice but to target each other. Mat and the former Champions were adamant that Sam broke their trust, so they voted him out and Sam became the second member of the jury.
