Randen started his game on the Nami tribe. His early strategic game involved following Venus Vafa around, having pinned her as a potential "Parvati 2.0". After he shared this observation with Soda Thompson, Soda relayed it back to Venus, to her dismay. However, Randen quickly turned around on Venus and the two formed a secretive alliance. Despite being on the outside of the majority alliance, things picked up for Randen when he found the Beware Advantage, which he shared with Venus.
However, Randen's game was quickly threatened by a mysterious paresthesia that suddenly beset him overnight on Day 6. Worried about a potentially disabling injury, he alerted the Medical Team, who attributed the sensation to a pinched nerve and cleared him to continue for the time being. For his own safety, Randen decided to sit out of the next Immunity Challenge, which his tribe won. Eventually, the persisting numbness was too troubling for the Medical Team to overlook, and they elected to pull Randen from the game to get him to a hospital for an MRI scan. After the scan revealed no permanent damage, Randen underwent months of physical therapy and made a full recovery.

- Randen is the oldest member of Nami and the oldest man to compete on Survivor 46.
- Randen is one of eight contestants to never visit Tribal Council. The others are Jonathan Libby, Wanda Shirk, Gary Stritesky, Kourtney Moon, Dana Lambert, Pat Cusack, and Jackson Fox.
- Randen is the lowest-placing member of Nami and the only one eliminated before the merge.
- Randen is also the only member of Nami to not be a member of the jury.
