One of Us Is Going to Win the War is the second episode of Survivor: Edge of Extinction.

Story

Day 4

After being the first person voted out the previous night, Reem chose to stay in the game, going to the Edge of Extinction without knowing what would be required of her to get back in the game. Reem approaches the shipwreck with a lowered mast where she reads a message: "This is the Edge of Extinction. You will have to work hard for everything. When fear or loneliness sets in, you must find the resolve to overcome. If at any point you wish to end your adventure, raise the sail and a boat will pick you up." Reem is annoyed at the prospect of possibly staying there for an indefinite time. With boredom setting in, Reem keeps herself occupied by doing chores, though she cannot help but cry, pondering why she got voted out by her tribe.

S38 reem t
Reem

I have no idea where I am, and I still don't know what's going on; but they don't know I'm here. I hope to show my face again and be like, "look what just happened!" I would love that, but again, but what do I have to go through for this second chance? "Edge of Extinction", what does that mean? I'm stranded, I got nothing better to do, but analyze why I got voted off.

At the Manu tribe, everyone jokes about getting their hands waterlogged following the previous night's rain. Rick checks up on Wendy, who was left out after the vote. Wendy explains that she would rather stick with Reem out of loyalty than side with Kelley, whom she finds to be a big threat.

S38 wendy t
Wendy

At Tribal Council, my strongest ally, Reem, was voted out; and now, I feel I'm the next in line and I blame Kelley. She's the ringleader. Kelley has played two times before this. For me? She's had her shot! Don't mess up first-time players' games, and she has this personality where she's trying to be your friend, and these people are eating that up? Not I! I can see right thought that!

Wendy points out that Kelley is already ingratiating her tribemates and the majority alliance has the power to vote her out. David, the other returning player on the tribe, understands Wendy's sentiments, but does not commit to any promises.

S38 wendy t
Wendy

David, the other second chance player, it's resonating in him, but right now, he's playing the go-with-the-flow game. I understand that, but the thing is, I think that Keith is with me; so with Rick and David on board with it, I just need one more vote.

Lauren and Wardog watch Wendy talking to David and Rick at a distance, and the two agree to keep tabs on her, especially when she is on the lookout for the Hidden Immunity Idol. Kelley joins them and receives a heads-up. Kelley and Wardog later warn the rest of the majority alliance about Wendy possibly selling them out come a Tribe Switch. Kelley suggests to find the idol as a group to prevent Wendy from getting it.

S38 kelley t
Kelley

I completely understand Wendy's position because I've been there. I've been on the bottom, I've been the target, I know exactly how it feels; she's trying to get something going, and having someone at camp who's freaking out and knows you're at the bottom is very dangerous. We can't let Wendy find the idol. Everyone else worked with me at the last Tribal, and I'm getting the sense they want to continue to work with me; but every time your name is thrown out there, it's just like, "what if?" Because sometimes, these things catch fire; so at this point, it's Wendy on this side, and me on this side and we're basically going to battle and one of us is going to win the war.

At the Kama tribe, Ron leads his tribe to a song-and-dance number which he intends to perform when Kama arrives at the next Immunity Challenge, with everyone joining in the fun. Aubry is in it, though she remains uneasy feeling targeted as a returning player.

S38 aurora t
Aurora

Morale is a huge reason why we're doing well in this game right now; why we won the other day. You have to be in a positive place. We need to feel bonded; and for us, dancing has become our thing.

S38 aubry t
Aubry

I hate "Kumbaya Survivor"; it's the worst! But I want to blend in with everybody else. I like going to Tribal first when I play Survivor because you see immediately where the lines are, you know how to work with it. When it's Kumbaya, and everybody's, "Ahh I just won the first challenge", you don't really know what the hell is going on.

Later, Aubry talks to Julia and Victoria about how they feel about having returnees around and if they would consider working with her. Victoria says she is happy that Aubry and Joe are there because the would not have established camp as quick as they did without them around, but she does not give a satisfying answer to Aubry's proposition for an alliance and neither does Julia.

S38 aubry t
Aubry

I'm finding it frustrating that these newbies aren't being forthcoming about their perception of returning players. I know Joe and I are under a magnifying glass. We're like these ants that people are looking at real hard; and I'm afraid the sun's gonna come and zap us the hell off this island!

Julia and Victoria tell Ron about their conversation with Aubry. Ron is ardent that this is their moment and not the returning players'. Later, Aubry talks to Gavin as well. However, Victoria sees through Aubry's schmoozing.

S38 victoria t
Victoria

Aubry right now is going to everyone. I think she's a little panicked. She's like, "I really like you", "I think you're a good player", "you remind me of myself", all that crap. She's just doing her best to pull somebody in with her. She's doing a great job at it, she might have to go!

Back at Manu, Kelley and Lauren attempt to look for the idol. Meanwhile, David and Rick suspect that Kelley already has the idol and only wants an open idol hunt as a distraction. Rick admits that he has no personal connections with Kelley. David suggests that he is open to blindsiding Kelley, but he suggests not to tell Wendy until they are sure that they want to pull it off.

S38 david t
David

Wendy feels her back's against the wall, because she lost her only ally which was Reem so she's worried that she could be next to go. So, Wendy's pitch is that we get rid of Wentworth and the funny thing is, I know that Kelley Wentworth is not going to let me too deep into this game; I know she wants to cut me soon, she's really a smart player and she's gonna do everything she can to eliminate threats.

Wendy joins the two and Rick admits that he and David both feel the same about Kelley. Wendy says that she can be a number for them to use if they feel like voting Kelley out. The two leave Wendy, promising her that her pleas are not for naught. David contemplates that Wendy's loyalty could be valuable and that he would definitely be open to working with her should the time come. David and Rick solidify their alliance, shaking hands in agreement. David tells Rick that he can eliminate him by the final four. Rick jokingly agrees.

S38 david t
David

Orchestrating a blindside is very delicate; you have to be so careful about who you let know about it. Keith seems to be tight with Wendy, but trying to pull in Wardog, that makes me very nervous because he doesn't like to talk strategy until it's absolutely necessary, but at the same time, Wendy's loyalty and trust could be worth more than money in this game.

S38 rick t
Rick

My strategy coming to this game was get with big guys and slip through and I think David might be my guy. We're two peas in a pod; I think we see the world the same way, we see the game the same way, and I'm gonna use my sense of humor and try to get tight with him.

S38 david t
David

Rick's hysterical; I love the guy! He's so much fun to be around and Rick is honestly the person I trust most in this game. Also, he's very smart and strategic, and that could be really great for my game; so I'll try to keep Rick around for as long as possible.

Back at Kama, Eric and Gavin agree to look for the idol.

S38 gavin t
Gavin

This is Survivor season 38; advantages and idols are in everyone's minds, and I'm the biggest fan here. I've been wanting to do this for so dang long! As a fan watching through the TV, I'm thinking, "How the heck do these people find this stuff?"; And it's the same for me now, just shooting in the dark. You truly have no idea where it's at.

S38 eric t
Eric

Geographically, the space is huge, we have no idea how the idols are hidden or if there's clues or markings, and the jungle's so thick that you really have to search for an extended period of time; and time away from the tribe is suspicious.

While collecting palm fronds, Julia, Victoria, and Julie also suspect that a Hidden Immunity Idol is available. Julie notices that the men are increasingly becoming missing, suspecting that they might looking for the idol. The women are convinced that they should be looking for idols as well. All attempts at Kama end up in failure.

S38 julie t
Julie

Recently, I see the men disappearing and they're gone for a long time, whether they're going off alone or going off in pairs, it's quite obvious there's a lot of idol searching going on! It's interesting to me that the women and men do fall into these preconceived roles. I don't know if it's about living this primitive lifestyle where the men are the gatherers and the women are the gatherers, I don't know. I think it's my own personal issue that I have to start to figure out. I'm not a sneaky person, and it feels sneaky to me to slither off searching for idols.

S38 victoria t
Victoria

I wish I knew what's going on with idols and advantages I'm sure people have started looking, but I have no idea how you even begin to start looking for something. It's a big place and everything's unique in one way, but also look exactly the same. Where do you begin?

At Manu, everyone is on the hunt for the idol, but it is Lauren who successfully finds it hidden in a tree. Lauren hides the idol in the sand.

S38 lauren t
Lauren

There's a lot of people looking for the idol, and the odds of finding it are slim but ever since I was a kid, finding an idol is on my Survivor bucket list because my two favorite female players were Parvati and Kelley Wentworth. Those were my role models, they are my Survivor queens, they weren't just girls that went around riding coattails, they were badasses, especially Kelley Wentworth. Kelley found two Immunity Idols in her season and she used them brilliantly. And so, I always wanted to find an idol. Finding it on the same tribe as one of my role models makes it astronomically more exciting! I'm 100% keeping it to myself; I'm very tight with Kelley but I'm definitely not telling her. I'm glad I have it and she doesn't.

Day 6

The tribes meet at the combined Reward/Immunity Challenge where after explaining the rules of the challenge, host Jeff Probst reveals that they are also playing for reward—a choice between two options: spices, knives, and a cutting board, or fishing gear. Jeff reminds Aubry that she had done the same challenge in Survivor: Game Changers, in which she recalls the snake being heavy and her tribe losing. With one extra member, the Kama tribe sits out Julie.

Kama takes an early lead, while Manu quickly trails due to Keith's inability to swim, with tribemates staying behind to aid him. Kama enters the cage to untie the heavy snake, while Keith continues to slow down even when entering the cage. Kama has their snake free and carries their snake up and over the cage. Manu continues to struggle carrying the snake, but eventually take it out of the cage. Kama, still in the lead, begins opening the snake to look for their numbered disks as Manu begins to close the gap. Ron correctly determines the combination in one guess for Kama, allowing Joe to toss the rings. David eventually gets it right for Manu, giving the rings to Chris. Chris jitters, prompting Keith to volunteer but still fails. Eric takes over for Joe and continues his hot streak. Chris comes back, but it is too late as Eric lands the last ring, winning Kama their second Immunity Challenge in a row and sending Manu back to Tribal Council. Kama chooses the fishing gear as their reward.

S38 wardog t
Wardog

Losing our second challenge definitely is deflating. It hurts; but now, it's I'm thinking maybe this is not a binary equation of just Wentworth or Wendy. Maybe there's another option. There is a Plan C I was thinking of: Keith is a liability in challenges. Maybe a new game plan has to be enacted.

Back at camp, Chris apologizes for the loss, but Kelley cheers him up, saying that he performed well. Keith also feels dejected, aware that it was him that lagged the tribe behind at the challenge.

S38 keith t
Keith

The challenge was such a disaster: My swimming was bad, Chris had to help me a lot, and then the ring toss. I just look horrible. So it did not go as planned. Before we lost this challenge, I was sure Wendy was going home, but now I'm thinking my name is on the chopping block so this could be my last day here.

Lauren and Wardog discuss the vote, with Wardog opening the idea of voting out Keith instead to keep the tribe strong. Wardog begins his campaign against Keith, much to Kelley's displeasure.

S38 wardog t
Wardog

We're down at numbers, we can't lose again. We need strength, and Keith is not strong at challenges. He's killing us! How is Keith helping the Wardog out? And the answer is he's not.

Wardog begins his campaign by telling Kelley and Rick that Wendy was decent in the challenge while Keith was dead weight.

S38 kelley t
Kelley

I knew this would happen: Wardog is leading the charge to vote out Keith, and it's stupid. I don't know what he's thinking. Yeah, Keith failed miserably, but he's not a threat to anybody whereas Wendy wants to get me out, so I am not happy!

S38 david t
David

I knew that convincing Wardog to vote out Wentworth was gonna be difficult; and sure enough, Wardog is very adamant that Keith is going home. And so now, I don't think that I don't think I have the five votes I need to get rid of Wentworth. Damn!

Chris and Rick also discuss voting Keith out. Chris, who has befriended Keith over the past few days, is saddened that his friend is being targeted. Chris gives Keith a hug, saying that he did his best. Keith promises to work on his swimming and swears loyalty to Chris if he gets spared.

S38 chris t
Chris

Unfortunately, Keith shot himself in the foot, which sucks, because he's a good kid; and I know that this game means a lot to him. Honestly, I want Keith to go because Keith has specifically told me, "I will be with you 'til the end. I will stay loyal to you more than anyone else," and that's not the type of player you vote out.

At the well, Chris brings the idea of keeping Keith around and voting Kelley out instead. Rick is elated to know there might still be a chance to pull off a blindside on Kelley.

S38 rick t
Rick

Holy crap! We might still be able to take out Wentworth, and the best part of that is Chris actually came up with the idea. Chris came to me, we think this is the prime time for a blindside. This is huge.

Rick goes to David to tell him that Chris is open to voting Kelley out. David is excited. With Chris and Wendy on their side, the two realize that all they need is Keith's vote.

S38 david t
David

I feel like we've been handed this gift; it's Christmas, because I'm all about blindsiding Wentworth. I think that's a great idea. This tribe is not big enough for two returning players, so I want to take her out before she comes after me. And as long as everyone's on board with this plan, it's almost gonna happen on its own.

Rick informs Keith that there is a plan brewing against Kelley and that all they need is Keith's vote.

S38 keith t
Keith

I'm excited, this is exactly what I wanted; we may have the numbers to vote out Kelley, so I have a new life.

Chris also tells Wardog about the plan to blindside Kelley, warning him that she will be down to take them out when she no longer needs them. Wardog argues that Kelley is the perfect shield come a Tribe Switch. Chris proposes to Wardog that if they take out Kelley now, he would be willing to vote Keith out next.

S38 wardog t
Wardog

Chris is throwing cold water on my idea; he wants to take out Wentworth! But I think that is very short-sighted. Yeah, she's a returning player, she's a threat, she plays the game hard, she finished fourth place last time, she's a gamer. But, she has a bigger target than I do, and that's a great reason to keep her around. I want the plan to be my plan, but I want everyone else to feel like it's their plan too. I don't want to look like I'm calling the shots. That's just gonna get me in trouble. So, Chris and myself, will have to make a decision: If we take out Wentworth, this is the vote.

Sensing a target is being arranged on her, Kelley tells Chris that she feels nervous heading to Tribal Council.

S38 kelley t
Kelley

People are acting very strange and it's making me nervous. There has been a shift, and if I'm in their shoes, what would I do? There is no question, I would vote me out. It's not like these people know each other's games but they do know mine. I've been in this position before and both times, I was blindsided. I trust Lauren, but not these other people, so my heart is beating very fast right now. If they take me out over Keith, I'll be pissed off!

The Manu arrives at Tribal Council, and Wendy expresses concern that her receiving votes last time is an indication that she could still be in trouble this time. Kelley, who also received a vote, is also uneasy but has expected to be targeted as a returning player. Kelley explains that she is worth keeping because she will always be seen as a bigger threat and is a strong contender in challenges. Lauren supports Kelley and sees her value in the tribe. Keith is put on the hot seat for his dismal challenge performance. Chris views this somewhat differently, saying that loyalty is just as important as physical strength. Rick states that challenge performance outweighs loyalty, unlike the last Tribal Council. In the end, Keith's poor showing in challenges costs him the game, and he is voted out, 6-1-1. On his way out, an upset Keith says he does not believe the tribe will win challenges even with him gone.

Upon leaving Tribal Council, Keith arrives at the same detour Reem went to and is visibly conflicted between a trip home or a trip to the Edge of Extinction. The episode ends with Keith struggling with his decision.

Challenges

Reward/Immunity Challenge: Serpent Turf
Tribes must race out into the water and swim over to their respective bamboo cage. Once the entire tribe has arrived, each person must climb up and over the cage wall into the water. They must then retrieve a long and heavy snake and bring it back to shore after crossing a balance beam before setting the snake on a table. The tribes must then retrieve six number tiles from inside the snake, which will be used to solve a number combination lock. Solving the combination lock frees eight rings that three castaways must throw at a series of oars that, when hit, will eventually spell out "IMMUNITY". The first tribe to spell out "IMMUNITY" wins.
Reward: Choice between spices, knives, and a cutting board or a fishing kit
Winner: Kama (Kama chose the fishing kit)
