Tribe History[]
The Moto Maji tribe was formed moments before the Day 20 Immunity Challenge. Six hours into the endurance challenge, Clarence Black brokered a deal with Teresa Cooper to let him win, as he had no allies and was branded as a physical threat. Despite Teresa's initial reservations, she and Clarence played a single round of Rock-paper-scissors to determine the winner. Clarence lost, giving Teresa the victory. The merged tribe agreed to move to the old Boran camp on the account that Boran had a better shelter and won the important potable water tank from a previous Reward Challenge.
The next day, Lex van den Berghe claimed to Clarence that the tribe unanimously decided to vote him out, citing his strength in challenges, to the ire of Kelly Goldsmith and Kim Johnson, who wanted to target outcast Frank Garrison instead. Despite Lex's efforts to convince his fellow ex-Borans to use their 6-4 majority over the ex-Samburus, both factions sent Clarence home in an 8-2 vote. Teresa, who promised not to vote for Clarence, cast her vote for Lex.
On Day 22, a disgruntled Lex went on a witch hunt for the person responsible for casting the second vote against him. He mistakenly accused Kelly, who vehemently denied it. At the Reward Challenge, Ethan Zohn won a trip to town and two goats to barter for any object he wished to buy. As a last-minute surprise, Ethan was tasked with picking a companion and chose Lex, who had finished second in the challenge. Back at camp, while the tribe was elated by Lex's absence, old tribal lines seemed to be reconsidered, with the Borans and Samburus regrouping. On Day 24, Ethan also won the next Immunity Challenge. Back at camp, Lex was convinced that Kelly had cast the mystery vote and campaigned to his fellow Borans that she had defected. Fed up with Lex's misguided instincts, Kelly actually flipped to the Samburu Alliance. Unbeknownst to her, the Samburu Alliance, who had not gotten along given their history together, notably Brandon Quinton's disdain for Frank's outlandish personality. In the end, Brandon's refusal to align with Frank swung him to the Boran side, sending a blindsided Kelly to the Jury in a 5-4 vote. After the vote, Brandon received the ire of his fellow ex-Samburus for blowing their chance at gaining a majority.
The next day, the castaways were tasked to pair up for the next Reward Challenge. In an odd occurrence, Brandon and Frank ended up pairing together and eventually won the challenge, winning themselves a movie date; much to the amusement of their tribemates. With Brandon away, Ethan and Tom Buchanan expressed to Lex their distrust of the bartender, while Lex argued otherwise, leading Ethan and Tom to question Lex's allegiance. Realizing his protectiveness of Brandon had put himself in jeopardy, Lex went on to win the Immunity Challenge on Day 27. Despite Lex's attempts to save Brandon, the Borans once again joined forces with the Samburus, voting Brandon out 6-2.
While the former Boran regaining their numbers advantage, Ethan, Kim J., and Tom's distrust of Lex grew; but any plans of voting him out was thwarted when Lex went on to win his second consecutive Immunity Challenge. With the former Samburu down to its last three members, Teresa pled to Kim J. to vote Ethan out over Frank. At Tribal Council, however, the Boran majority held, forcing Teresa and Kim Powers to join them in voting Frank out, 6-1.
The Day 31 Reward Challenge required the castaways to answer personal questions previously asked of their family through videotape. Displaying great familiarity with his wife, Lex won his third challenge in a row, earning a two-day resort stay at the Masai Mara and a hot air balloon ride to watch the migrating wildebeest, all charged to Jeff Probst's credit card. Lex chose Tom to join him in an attempt to make amends. At the Day 33 Immunity Challenge, which involved throwing the traditional African weapon called the rungu, Tom won. Back at camp, Teresa lobbied again to Kim J. and Tom to join her and Kim P. in voting Lex, but failed, and Kim P. was voted out 4-2, leaving Teresa as the last remaining original Samburu.
Lex won the Day 35 Reward Challenge, winning himself a new car and becoming an ambassador to a local village to donate medical supplies to help address Kenya's worsening AIDS crisis, seemingly brewing jealousy among the other players, particularly Tom. With Lex gone for the day, Kim J. expressed to Ethan she began contemplating turning on Lex. Lex returned and felt a tense mood at camp, but Kim J. retracted and denied there were any plans against him.
The Day 36 Immunity Challenge consisted of elements from past challenges. After a tight race between Lex and Ethan, Lex won his third individual immunity win. Desperate to save herself, Teresa admitted to Lex that she was the mystery voter at Moto Maji's first Tribal Council and warned him about Tom secretly gunning for him. Despite her valiant efforts, Teresa was voted out 4-1, rendering the original Samburu effectively extinct. At the wake of Teresa's elimination, Lex confronted Tom for plotting against him, though they reconciled the next day. The next Immunity Challenge was held at Tribal Council, where the final four were quizzed about their fallen comrades. Following a critical error on the side of the producers,[1] Kim J. won her first challenge, pitting Ethan, Lex, and Tom, who had a pact to the end in the early days of Boran, against each other. Tom, who was viewed as charming yet manipulative, was voted out 3-1.
On the morning of Day 38, Jeff arrived at camp, informing the final three about the rites of passage ceremony led by the real-life Samburu tribe, where they would pay respects to the thirteen fallen castaways before competing in their Final Immunity Challenge. During the challenge, Ethan was eliminated first, while Lex, who was up all night due to stomach pains, stumbled after three hours, winning Kim J. her second consecutive challenge. Ultimately, Kim J. chose Ethan to join her in the final two, voting out Lex, believing that if Ethan wins, the prize money would be in better hands.
At the Final Tribal Council, Kim J. was lauded for assuming a motherly role but was criticized for lacking any strategic command of the game, while Ethan was praised for his overall congeniality and challenge strength but criticized for his lack of deep social relationships outside of Lex and Tom. The jury voted, and in a 5-2 decision, Ethan won the title of Sole Survivor, garnering the votes of Kelly, Frank, Teresa, Tom, and Lex.
