Near the end of the first Immunity Challenge, an exhausted Mathieu let go of his share of the weight and watched as the rest of the Kumo tribe tried to finish. When his tribe lost this challenge, Mathieu was targeted for elimination because his weak performance in the previous challenge combined with the fact that he was dependent on his parents left his tribemates with the first impression that he wasn't ready yet for the harsh elements of Koh-Lanta. Knowing this, Mathieu campaigned for Aude Réant to receive votes and go home because she was the person that he had developed the least affinity with. Fortunately for Mathieu, when Aude found out about his campaigning, she asked the tribe to vote her out because she felt that nobody there deserved to receive her vote against them and because, in turn, she was willing to sacrifice herself for the rest of them to remain in the game. Therefore, at Tribal Council, he was spared and Aude was voted out. However, upon Aude's exit, Denis Brogniart informed the tribe that they have to vote someone else out because her elimination would be treated as if it were a quit. This time, there was no escape for Mathieu and, in spite of the confusion, he was eliminated.
Because he had university exams at the time, Mathieu was the only contestant this season not present for the live final vote count in Paris.
