Despite being gifted with an astounding "intellectual capacity", Marthunis' arrogance and lack of social awareness aggravated every member of the Mindanao tribe. Even when he was roped into the majority alliance, his failure to play along with his alliance's ploy at Tribal Council prompted his ejection from the alliance. Switched to the new Mindanao tribe, his former allies agreed that he was too much of a strategic liability; Marthunis concurred and gave his tribemates his blessing to vote him out at the Double Tribal Council. However, when he expressed this plan at Tribal Council, Nico Panagio forewent the vote and let him quit the game.

- Out of frustration, Marthunis threw his Mindanao Buff somewhere on location on his way out, which was discovered the following year by Survivor: Palau contestant Katie Gallagher while touring around El Nido.[2]
