Les Aventuriers de Koh-Lanta is the first season of Koh-Lanta. This season aired on TF1 on Saturdays and Sundays at 6:55 p.m from August 4 to September 22, 2001.

Gilles Nicolet defeated Guénaëlle Biras in a 4-3 jury vote to become the Sole Survivor. To date, this season has produced three returning players (Guénaëlle Biras, Jean-Luc Fiorina and Sandra Acabado) for future seasons.

Production

With the resounding success of Survivor: Borneo, the French television network TF1 decided to make its own version of Survivor.

Approximately 16,000 applications were sent. One hundred of them then got interviewed, took physical tests, and were given a thorough medical examination. Sixteen people got selected to participate.

This season was hosted by Hubert Auriol. Filming took place in 2001 on the coast of Ko Lanta in Thailand and lasted 43 days. The prize for the winner was €100,000, equivalent to roughly US$109,000 in 2023.

Format

• Tribe Composition: The sixteen castaways were divided into two tribes of eight.
• Merge: The tribes merged on Day 21 with ten contestants remaining.
• Ambassadors: At the merge, each tribe sends one ambassador to a meeting. The two ambassadors must agree on one castaway who would receive an extra vote against them at the next Tribal Council. If they fail to come to a consensus, the two of them draw rocks, and the extra vote is cast against the one who loses the draw.
• Final Four Elimination: At the final four, the remaining castaways compete in the Fallen Comrades challenge, and the castaway with the fewest right answers is eliminated from the game.
