La Isla 2012: El Reality is the first season of one of the TV Azteca incarnations of the competitive reality TV show La Isla.
María Renee Núñez became the series' first Sole Survivor, beating Julio César Frías in the Grand Finale to win the MX$2,000,000 grand prize.
To date, this season has produced 5 returning players, with Gaby Fernández, Ivonne Montero, Julio César Frías, Mariana Torres, and Rafa Mercadante coming back in future seasons.
Development[]
The season featured 12 contestants who were already on the public eye, known in the show as Celebrities. They didn't need to audition, as they were cast due to their status. It also held in-person auditions to cast 5 of the 6 everyday people, with these taking place all over the country from May to June 2012. The final castaway was cast thanks to online auditions, held at around the same time.[3]
Once all 18 people were cast, they flew out to the Dominican Republic, wherein the season was recorded over a period of two months. The season then premiered on August 20. The Reunion and Finale were recorded a couple of weeks before its December 8 air date.
Weekly Schedule[]
The program aired on Azteca 7 four times a week, with it following a given schedule on what happens each day:
Day | Ocurrence | |
---|---|---|
Mondays | Territorial Challenge | Reward Challenge (at the merge) |
Tuesdays | Immunity Challenge | |
Wednesdays | Final Challenge | |
Thursdays | Trial (up until final six) |
Deathly Duel (after final six) |
Twists/Changes[]
- Celebrities vs. Strangers: The cast consists features 12 Mexican and South American celebrities, already known to the general public, and 6 contestants previously unknown, coming from all walks of life.
- Day 1 Split: The 12 celebrities were be split into two tribes of six people each. This split was done via random draw, once everyone landed. The six names that were drawn—three men and three women—would comprise one tribe, while the other six names would be the other.
- Beaches: The Tribes compete each week for one of three beaches:
- High Beach has all of the amenities one could ask for, included but not limited to: showers, a bed, all the food they could ask for, and a jacuzzi.
- Medium Beach only gave the tribe some tools, harvested bananas and limes, and hammocks to sleep on. Their water tank is also close to their campsite.
- Low Beach contains half as many supplies as Medium Beach, has no hammocks, and their water well is miles away from where they're staying.
- Special Privileges: All three tribes would have different privileges based on their status before they came in the game:
- The Celebridades Tribe was able to keep all of their luggage, would get the luxuries of High Beach, and would arrive to it, first via luxury cars, and then from a catamaran, complete with gourmet food and service.
- The Famosos Tribe had to choose and pack all of the luggage that was able to fit in a small bag. They arrived at the not-as-good Medium Beach, getting to it via horseback, and then using motor-powered boats.
- The Desconocidos Tribe left all of their luggage behind. They'd be living in Low Beach for the first week, and got there after they walked and manually rowed to their new beach.
- Captains' Challenge: On Day 16, each tribe would send a captain, and they would compete in a challenge representing their team. This challenge determines the immediate fate of the Tribes, as the losing captain's Tribe would cease to exist. Since this challenge was also a Territorial Challenge, a winner would have to be determined as well. The three representatives were Lourdes Figueroa, Ricardo Casares, and Yanilen Díaz. Yanilen would fall off first, while Ricardo followed her shortly after, thus leaving Lourdes as the winner.
- Tribe Absorption: The day after the Captains' Challenge, the tribes were informed of the challenge's outcome, and, due to Yanilen's loss, the Famosos Tribe would disband and split into the former Celebridades and Desconocidos tribes. Since Lourdes won, she'd have first pick as to which member from the former Famosos Tribe would join her Tribe.
- Trial Mechanics: The winner(s) of the Immunity Challenge would be the Judge(s) for that week's Trial, and would be in charge of saving one person from the losing Tribe (or the rest of the Merged Tribe once that phase was reached). Then, the losing Tribe would vote someone out (at the Merge, the Judge also gets a regular vote). Once all votes would be read, the Judge(s)'s vote would be revealed, and depending on what happened, the following rules would be enforced:
- If the person saved by the Judge(s) was voted out, then the whole vote would be nullified, and a new round of voting would commence, this time out loud and in front of everyone else.
- If the saved person was part of a 2-person tie, the other castaway would be eliminated.
- If the castaway that was saved was part of a 3+-person tie, or there was a 2+-way tie in either the first or second rounds of voting, the saved person would break the tie, by announcing the person who would be leaving out loud.
- Deathly Duel: Once the cast reaches final six, the two castaways who won immunity would be safe, while the others would take part in a life-or-death duel, where one person would be eliminated. At final three, the castaways take part in a duel of their own, with one person leaving, and the other two making it to finale night.
- Finale Night: The Final Two would compete once more in an extremely long challenge, consisting of multiple phases, and that challenge would determine the Sole Survivor.

Notes:
^1 The castaway who was supposed to be voted out was saved by the judges, and since they'd gotten the majority of the votes, that entire voting round was nullified, and a new one commenced. |
Trivia[]
- This season starts a sort of curse for the first castaway voted out, as it would be a woman from the orange-colored tribe. In this case, it was Belem Guerrero.
- This season also started a tradition where the Final Two castaways would be from the same tribe, this time being the Desconocidos tribe.
