Koh-Lanta: La Légende is the seventh special season of Koh-Lanta and the twenty-seventh season overall. It was broadcast on TF1 from August 24 to December 14, 2021.

This season featured twenty of the show's most iconic former contestants to commemorate its 20th anniversary.

Initially, Claude Dartois defeated Laurent Maistret in a 9-4 jury vote to become the Sole Survivor. However, due to accusations of both the finalists (among several others) cheating by means of stealing food from the production's base of operations, neither was awarded the title of Sole Survivor. Production instead donated the €100,000 grand prize to the Bertrand-Kamal Foundation in remembrance of Les 4 Terres castaway Bertrand-Kamal Loudhiri, who passed away during his respective season's broadcast from pancreatic cancer.

Production

The production flew in four alternates for this season, consisting of two men and two women:

• Loïc (Les 4 Terres) and Sandro (Cambodge).
• Béatrice (La Guerre des Chefs) and another undisclosed person.
  

Loïc entered the game following Freddy's evacuation during Episode 1.

Twists/Changes

• Legends: Twenty former Koh-Lanta castaways return for another chance at the Sole Survivor title.
• Battle of the Sexes: At the start of the game, the castaways are divided into two tribes based on gender. Those tribes don't have any color, flag, or buff.
• Double Tribal Council: In the first two episodes, both tribes attend Tribal Council to each vote out one person. In both occurrences, they compete separately for individual immunity in two different challenges, with both the first and second-place finishers earning immunity in each challenge. The first-place finishers also gain an additional power to be used at the next Tribal Council:
  • For the first Tribal Council, they can give an Extra Vote to a castaway on the opposite tribe.
  • For the second Tribal Council, they can give immunity to a member of the opposite tribe after the votes have been cast.
• Penalty Vote after Challenge: In the individual Immunity Challenges of the first two episodes, the castaways that finish in the last two places receive a penalty vote against them at the next Tribal Council. Penalty votes do not extend through a revote.
• Isle of the Banished: After departing Tribal Council, the voted out castaways are given the choice to permanently leave the game or go into the unknown for a chance to come back. If they choose the latter option, they are taken to the Isle of the Banished, a small island with little resources. The residents of the island compete in an elimination duel every three days until the merge, where the last two castaways standing return to the main game.
• Tribe Switch: On Day 6, the men's and women's tribes are dissolved. A Reward Challenge is held, with the first phase being a relay race: starting with the two winners of the previous Immunity Challenge, each castaway picks a torch corresponding to another player, who becomes their tribemate and goes on to pick another torch. The Reward Challenge then continues with the two new tribes formed.
• Pre-merge Individual Challenge: On Day 12, an individual Reward Challenge is held. Two castaways per tribe could qualify for the final phase, with the first three finalists winning reward.
• Impromptu Tribal Council: On Day 13, Tribal Council is held immediately after the Immunity Challenge, at the challenge site.
• Replacement: Due to Freddy Boucher being evacuated before the first Tribal Council, Loïc Riowal entered the game on Day 2 to replace him.
• Ambassadors: At the merge, both tribes must appoint a castaway from the opposite tribe to attend the ambassadors meeting, where their purpose is to directly eliminate a castaway from the game. If the ambassadors do not agree on a name, one of the two regular ambassadors is eliminated by a rock draw.
  • Secret Ambassadors: : Following the last Duel of the Banished, both winners of the challenge joined the Ambassadors as Secret Ambassadors. Unbeknownst to the other castaways, they can then participate in the decision of eliminating a castaway from the game and they will then joined the merged tribe.
• Tied Destinies: On Day 23, the ten remaining castaways are divided into five pairs by a rock draw. Until the next Tribal Council, the fate of each contestant is linked to their partner: the challenges are competed by pairs, and the person voted out at Tribal Council causes their partner's demise.

Notes: ^1 As the first place finisher of their respective Immunity challenges, Loïc and Clémence earned the right to gift Immunity to someone from the opposite tribe. They respectively chose Alexandra and Maxime. ^2 An Immunity Necklace was played, negating all votes against its user. ^3 For the first half of the third Reward challenge, both tribes competed as teams. The last part of the challenge was individual : two castaways from each tribe would qualify. No Sole Survivor was crowned and the Grand Prize was given to a charity in remembrance of Bertrand-Kamal Loudhriri.

No vote occurred for his removal and Loïc entered the game to replace him. ^2 Because they arrived in first place in the first Immunity challenges, Claude and Coumba earned the right to award a second vote to someone from the opposite team. They agreed to vote Christelle out of the game. ^9 As victors of the last Duel of the Banished, Clémence and Ugo were immune to the Merge Tribal Council, thanks to an Immunity amulet. Since Clémence won the Merge Immunity Challenge, she was able to give her amulet to one of her fellow castaways. She chose Alix, thus negating seven votes against her. ^10 Because he arrived in last place in the Immunity challenge, Namadia received one vote against him at the following Tribal Council. ^11 The castaway who finished last in the Sudden Deat Challenge would be eliminated from the main game. ^12 This castaway was given the power to vote twice by the castaway voted out at the previous Tribal Council. ^13 Because they arrived in last place in the Immunity challenge, Jade and Sam each received one vote against them at the following Tribal Council. ^14 Teheiura was Christelle's partner during the Tied Destinies twist, therefore he was also eliminated when Christelle was voted out. ^15 During the last Duel of the Banished, Ugo vanquished thus joining the Final 5 and eliminating Alix and Sam. ^16 At the final five, the remaining castaways competed in an elimination challenge where two castaways would be eliminated from the game. Jade and Phil came in last and were eliminated. ^17 Claude and Ugo did not vote as they could only vote for each other. By virtue of winning the Final Immunity Challenge, only Laurent voted. ^18 Because of many occurences of cheating, Claude's victory was invalidated. No Sole Survivor was crowned and the Grand Prize was given to a charity in remembrance of Bertrand-Kamal Loudrhiri.

Trivia

• With this season, Christelle Gauzet and Jade Handi currently hold the record for the largest gap between appearances in two different seasons (including special seasons), with 18 seasons.
  • Meanwhile, Clémence Castel and Coumba Baradji currently hold the record for the largest gap between their first and most recent appearances (including special seasons), with 22 seasons.
• Although the "Isle of the Banished" twist is similar to the name of the twist used in Malaisie, it works in a very different fashion (similar to Exile Island from Le Combat des Héros).
• This was the first aired season in the Survivor franchise that finished without an official winner, as Claude Dartois had his title revoked for cheating.
