Jungle Relay (also known as Outwit, Outplay, Outrig, Share the Wealth, Snake, Rattle & Roll, Marooning, Crate Wide Open, Barge Simpson, and Tiers of Heaven) is a recurring tribal challenge that debuted in Survivor: Marquesas and later reappeared in Vanuatu, Gabon, Philippines, and Kaôh Rōng. Since Survivor 42, it has consistently appeared as the opening Reward Challenge.
Rules[]
Contestants must run out into the jungle and complete a series of tasks with a partner or alone. Then, one final task awaits either the entire tribe or another pair. The first tribe to finish their tasks would win.
Survivor 45 introduced a variation of the challenge that took place entirely in the ocean rather than on land.
History[]
United States[]
The challenge made its debut in Marquesas as a Reward Challenge. The tribes raced through the jungle collecting oars and keys for a final pair to paddle out and grab their tribe flag. Rotu was initially declared the winner, but Maraamu protested because Rotu had not rehooked their boat back to its post and Robert DeCanio did not arrive to the tiki with John Carroll when John put the flag in and in fact only arrived after Kathy and Gina Crews got there, so Maraamu won the challenge and a feast.
The challenge returned in Vanuatu, this time as an Immunity Challenge. Pairs ran through the jungle to untie two pieces of an outrigger and two paddles. Once the boat was tied together, two more castaways paddled out to retrieve a tribe flag. Yasur fell behind when Rory Freeman had trouble untying the knots to release the outrigger and despite going off course for the flag, Lopevi managed to secure the victory.
The challenge was returned in Gabon, once again for immunity. Susie Smith sat out for Kota. The tribes was divided into three pairs, tethered by a rope. The castaways will crawl under a cargo net, race under the net and pass though an obstacle to receive a piece of flag pole and race back. Then the next pair goes, made more difficult with an additional obstacle. Once all of the pieces are recovered, the tribes must assemble the flag pole. The first tribe to do so wins. The first pair was Randy Bailey and Bob Crowley for Kota, while Kelly Czarnecki and Sugar Kiper was the first for Fang. The second pair for Kota was Corinne Kaplan and Charlie Herschel, while the Crystal Cox and Ace Gordon was the second for Fang. Marcus Lehman and Dan Kay was the final pair for Kota, while the Fang's final pair was Matty Whitmore and Ken Hoang. Kota had the initial lead, but Fang caught up and surpassed them. However, Ace had problems with the pole. This allowed Kota to win immunity for the third time in a row.
This challenge later returned in Philippines, as the first immunity and Reward Challenge. Each tribe has 2 members run into the jungle to obtain paddles, then they would return with the paddles and give it to 2 other tribe members who would then row out into the ocean to retrieve a chest under water and bring it back to shore. Then the remaining 2 members would use the pieces inside to solve a puzzle. The first 2 tribes to complete this challenge won immunity. Tandang had an early lead with Matsing right behind. Kalabaw was originally in last place. But during the second part of the challenge Kalabaw passed Matsing. During the puzzle part, Tandang maintained the lead but Kalabaw caught up and eventually placed first in the challenge with Tandang placing second. Matsing lost the challenge due to the people designated to do the puzzle not being good at puzzles.
The challenge reappeared in Kaôh Rōng as an Immunity Challenge. Two tribe members had to run into the jungle, climb up an A-frame and untie three puzzle pieces. Two other tribe members then had to swim into the ocean and retrieve another two pieces. Once all the pieces were retrieved the tribes would use them to finish a snake rope puzzle. Despite Chan Loh forgetting one of their pieces at the jungle stage and falling behind during the swimming stage, they were able to finish their puzzle first and win immunity. Both Gondol and To Tang struggled with the puzzle, but eventually Gondol finished, sending To Tang to Tribal Council.
Since Survivor 42, this challenge has appeared as the opening Reward Challenge every season. In 42, the first representative from each tribe, Tori Meehan for Ika, Jonathan Young for Taku, and Daniel Strunk for Vati, raced to climb up a rope net to grab two paddles for their tribe. Then, Drea Wheeler, Lindsay Dolashewich and Hai Giang raced for the second leg of the relay to grab a second pair of paddles. In the rowing portion of the challenge, Taku surged ahead, returning to the beach first with supplies to make a long pole to retrieve a flint. However, Marya Sherron's failure in this final part of the challenge allowed Rocksroy Bailey to win reward for Ika.
In 43, two members of each tribe would race into the jungle for two wooden crates. When they have returned, two more members would race into the ocean to pull a boat containing more crates back to shore. Once the boat is clipped in, the last two members will use the crates to form a cube. Once completed, one person will climb the cube, using a bamboo pole to remove a flint on a ring from a slanted pole. Despite Coco leading the challenge, Cody Assenmacher's suggestion to hold the flint with the hollow part of the pole allowed Dwight Moore to retrieve Vesi's flint first, winning reward for the tribe.
In 44, two members at a time would race under obstacles to collect puzzle pieces. When one pair returned, the next pair goes until the tribe has collected all eight puzzle pieces. After that, two tribe members would have to solve a puzzle with the puzzle pieces. Once they are done, one member at a time would attempt to throw a ring out of a tall pole. The challenge had to be paused after Tika's Bruce Perreault collapsed during the challenge due to a head injury, and resumed after he was evaluated by the Medical Team, who deemed him fit to continue. Although Tika held a significant lead, Carolyn Wiger stalled on the rings, allowing Soka to win the challenge and the reward. The challenge continued until Ratu released all three rings, earning them a second-place finish and allowing them to decide which of the Savvy or Sweat tasks to perform.
In 45, the challenge was played in the ocean. Starting on a barge, one pair would race to empty out a crate filled with heavy bags and rope, allowing them to retrieve a key. The next pair would then leap off the barge and swim to a boat containing a second key, then paddle around a buoy and back to the barge, while the last pair would take those two keys to unlock two poles, which they would use to push a bag containing a flint off a metal spring. Although Lulu were the first tribe back to the barge, Brandon Donlon could not lift his body up the ladder, allowing Belo and Reba to pass them heading into the final stage. Despite this, Lulu nearly staged a comeback and were only seconds behind Reba, which benefited from Drew Basile's height in retrieving their flint first, winning them reward.
In 46, the tribes raced out to collect puzzle pieces, which they then used to build a podium. One member then hopped on the podium and used a stick to free a ring from a pole. Nami was the first to complete the challenge, while Siga handily beat Yanu to take the second-place finish and the choice between the Savvy or Sweat tasks.

Trivia[]
- This challenge would mark the first time host Jeff Probst would make a wrong judgment call during a challenge where he announced the wrong tribe winning in Marquesas.
- Survivor 44 is the first season where none of the competing tribes were of primary colors. It is thus the first season where the challenge was won by a tribe that was not of a primary color.
