Survivor
Being a fan of the game, Joel started on the orange Airai tribe. Initially Mikey Bortone took control of the tribe, which did not bother Joel. Joel was admired for his superior strength early in the game. When Airai lost the Day 6 Immunity Challenge Joel was planning on voting out Chet Welch or Tracy Hughes-Wolf, until he came up with a better plan: Blindside Mikey's closest ally and take control of the tribe. This plan worked as at Tribal Council he managed to blindside Mikey's closest ally Mary. At Airai's next Tribal Council, Joel came up with a plan to blindside Mikey himself, which worked as Mikey was eliminated by a 6-3 vote.
In "He's a Ball of Goo!", there was a tribe switch which moved him to Malakal, along with Tracy, Chet, and Erik. After losing the Immunity Challenge, he immediately rallied the tribe to vote for Chet, who was easily seen as the weakest competitor, but Cirie saw this as an opportunity to blindside him because Joel was already playing the game, while Chet wasn't playing at all (strategically or physically), which would mean that it would definitely be easier to eliminate Chet later on in the game. This plan worked after they convinced Tracy and Chet, who were on the outs of the old Airai alliance, to vote Joel out as well, which made Joel the 5th person voted out of Survivor: Micronesia.
