Born and raised in Niagara Falls, N.Y., Joanna Ward moved to Atlanta with her family when she was an adolescent. She moved to South Carolina to attend college after being recruited on a basketball scholarship. She went on to receive her bachelor's degree in English education and her master's degree in education in school guidance counseling from South Carolina State University. She currently works as a school guidance counselor. She is also an Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Certified aerobic instructor.

Ward enjoys fellowship with Christian believers and spending time with her son, Dontré. She also enjoys tae bo, basketball, mountain climbing and running. She describes herself as strong, courageous and independent. If she could hold political office, she would become the mayor of a small town. She has done several commercials and made a brief appearance in the movie "Juwanna Mann." She considers her greatest achievement to be when she became a born-again Christian which she feels changed her into a better person. "One of my most enjoyable hobbies is lifting up the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in pure praise and worship." She considers her mother, who recently passed away, to be the most influential person in her life. Having had the support of family and friends, she is doing this to prove to herself that she is truly a survivor outside of life's common adversities. If she wins the $1 million, she will buy a new house.

Ward is currently single and living in Orangesburg, S.C. Her birth date is April 29, 1971.

Survivor: The Amazon

Joanna Ward was placed on the all-female Jaburu tribe. Joanna made her faith in Jesus Christ very clear, early on. The Jaburu camp was more disorganized than the all-male Tambaqui. She and Jeanne Hebert managed to catch a small fish. Jeanne was reinvigorated with Joanna's gospel music. Joanna lead the Jaburu though pray of the tiny fish. At the first challenge of the season, Jaburu won because Ryan Aiken and Daniel Lue struggled on the balance beam. Joanna preferred not to have the idol in camp because of her religious beliefs. In her mind, keeping the Idol was confirmed a bad Idea due to frequent rainstorms. At the Reward Challenge, Joanna lead Jaburu to victory and fishing bait. Christy Smith viewed Joanna's beliefs about the idol as stupid. That caused a fight between the two and Joanna stormed off leaving Christy in tears. Jaburu lost immunity for the first time. Joanna voted against Christy because of her attitude. However, Janet Koth was voted out because of her weakness and alleged smuggling a granola bar.

Joanna started the Reward Challenge by asking Dave Johnson for a pumice stone, which he did not have. Joanna was delighted when Daniel made himself look like a fool. Jaburu won the challenge and various tolietries. With Deena Bennett in charge, The Jaburu camp life improved significantly. Jaburu won immunity, keeping Joanna safe. The next day, Joanna was anticipating everyone to help out camp. Instead, it was just her and Jeanne doing chores. Joanna said that beauty fades and that your faith to god is important. Jenna Morasca felt that she was picking on the younger women for have good bodies. Jaburu lost the Reward Challenge. Shawna Mitchell had a mental breakdown and wanted out. Jaburu lost the Immunity Challenge. Joanna and Jeanne were ready to honor Shawna's request and vote her off. However, Deena felt that Joanna was the biggest threat because of her work ethic and strength in challenges. Deena convinced Christy to vote out Joanna. Deena's plan came to tuition and Joanna was blindsided in a 4-2-1 vote, upsetting Shawna who was hoping to be voted out instead.

• On January 9, 2010, Joanna attended Survivor's 10-year anniversary party.

Trivia

• Joanna's luxury item was a picture of her mother
• In the episode Storms, Joanna said that she didn't like the Immunity Idol because she felt it was against the Ten Commandments (you shall not make for yourself an idol).
• Joanna was mentioned in the "Business Ethics" episode in season five of The Office by the character Ryan, claiming he "hooked up with a girl that looked just like her" in New York City.
