It's a Long Way to the Top (also known as Crate Smash) is a recurring challenge that originated in Survivor: Caramoan and was later used internationally in Survivor South Africa: Champions.

Rules

Pairs of tribe members will make their way up a four-story tower. On each of the floors, the pairs will throw crates down the tower, breaking them to release sandbags or coconuts, which will be collected as ammunition. Once all four sets of crates have been thrown down, one pair will collect the ammunition and the tribe will throw them at targets. The first tribe to hit all their targets wins.

History

In Survivor: Caramoan, after collecting their sandbags, two tribe members would throw the sandbags into six holes. The Favorites held the lead on pushing the crates, but Reynold Toepfer's aptitude with the sandbag toss allowed the Fans to land the sixth sandbag first to win immunity, as well as flint.

In Survivor South Africa: Champions, one tribe member first threw a coconut at a hanging wooden ladder to knock it down. Pairs of tribemates then used the ladder to climb up a four-story tower, pushing down two crates at each floor. The tribes then collected the coconuts from the broken crates and threw the coconuts to break ten wooden targets. The lead changed between Selatan and Utara throughout the challenge, but Utara surged ahead at the coconut throw to break their targets first to win spices and a chocolate cake.
