I've Been Bamboozled! is the fifth episode of Survivor: All-Stars.

Story[]

A Bundle of bamboo poles proves to be a headache for the castaways.

—Episode Synopsis[2]

Day 13[]

The three tribes find bundles of bamboo along with their Tree Mail and are asked to build a raft for the Reward Challenge. Saboga makes an elaborate raft. However, Mogo Mogo's raft is built with laziness, merely being a bundle of bamboo, which Richard Hatch thinks will not be swift. At Chapera, the tribe constructs a more organized one, which Susan Hawk urinates on to christen it.

At the Reward Challenge, host Jeff Probst reveals that the first and second tribes to finish will get the final clue to the final key to their Buried Treasure, which is now useless to Chapera, as they had already found it. However, Jeff reveals an even bigger twist. The tribe that finishes last will be dissolved and absorbed by the other tribes. Mogo Mogo finishes first, followed by Chapera. Saboga comes in last and is dissolved. Chapera and Mogo Mogo absorb two members each of the dissolved tribe.

For coming in first, Mogo Mogo gets the first pick. They choose Ethan Zohn first because they want him gone. Chapera then chooses Rupert Boneham for his extreme likability. Mogo Mogo then tries to think of which Saboga girl Ethan did not bond as strongly with, so they choose Jerri Manthey, leaving Jenna Lewis to go to Chapera.

Unlike Mogo Mogo, Chapera does not target the two newcomers. Instead, Amber Brkich and Rob Mariano invite Jenna L. and Rupert in their alliance, which they accept.

Day 14[]

The first thing Mogo Mogo does in the morning is look for the final key, which they find. Unfortunately, the rice is rotten, so they still need fish.

Ethan decides to go spearfishing and comes back with a fish, to Richard's jealousy. Later on, Richard dives down, and comes back with two large fish, though Ethan never intended to step on his toes.

Day 15[]

During the Immunity Challenge, it is neck and neck between Chapera and Mogo Mogo, during which Richard gets naked and rubs up against Susan. Strategy comes in when all of Chapera jumps off so that Rob M. can run the course because he does best at balance. Chapera ends up winning, and Mogo Mogo has to vote someone out.

Heading back, Chapera celebrates their victory and Susan admits that she wants Richard to be voted out for what he did to her.

At Mogo Mogo, Colby Donaldson talks to Ethan in the woods, and proposes Richard's blindside. Colby tells Ethan that Richard thinks that Ethan is going, but that he will save him if he votes for Richard. Ethan accepts the offer, because that way, he at least gets a 50-50 shot. Colby then talks to Lex van den Berghe about it, and he agrees, so they have three people of seven in the deal.

Colby then approaches his old The Australian Outback rival Jerri to get the needed fourth vote to get rid of Richard. However, she feels that it does not make sense to do that, as Colby "screwed her over" last time they played together.

Lex then approaches Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien and Shii Ann Huang for the same topic, but they are unsure, as they expect that Ethan will be going home.

Jerri wants to side with Richard and tries to get the other girls' approval, but Kathy and Shii Ann are still conflicted. She then tells Richard about the deal to vote him out and he surmises that the only way that could happen was Colby, Ethan, and Lex working together. In a confessional, Richard explains his counter strategy: form an alliance with the girls to vote out the three guys plotting his doom.

Jerri then tells Richard that he has her vote 100% if Colby goes first, to which Richard agrees, and Kathy finds herself in the middle.

At Tribal Council, Colby, Ethan, and Lex vote for Richard, and Richard votes for Colby. Jerri, Kathy, and Shii Ann ultimately side with the guys, and Richard is voted out 6-1, but not before yelling "I've been bamboozled!", much to the amusement of his tribemates and Jeff. After Jeff snuffs his torch, Richard dances as he leaves.

Challenges[]

Challenge: Shipwrecked Raft Rescue
Tribes must build a raft from provided bamboo and rope before the challenge. Two members will be on the raft and must paddle out to retrieve the other two members stranded on pontoons, then grab the tribe flag from a floating crate and return to shore.
Reward: Fishing spear, hooks, and mask.
Additional Stipulation: If Mogo Mogo and/or Saboga finishes first or second, they would get the final clue to their rice box. On the other hand, the tribe that finishes last will be dissolved, with its remaining members to be absorbed by the other two tribes.
Winners (in order of finish): Mogo Mogo and Chapera

Challenge: Pilfering Pirates
One at a time, tribe members must run over floating balance beams, grab a flag, and return to their start. There is an Attack Zone in the middle of the course for physical contact, but both players must be within the zone before contact occurs. The first tribe to retrieve 20 flags wins.
Winner: Chapera

Voting Confessionals[]

Richard
(voting against Colby) It does come down to this. You really could have trusted me. I was--I was on your side. I know that's hard to believe, but it's true.
Colby
(voting against Richard) Hatch, you're a hell of a player, and you almost had me convinced I can trust you. But my gut told me not to. I'm not going to. Best of luck.

Final Words[]

Richard
Oops! (laughs) So much for what I thought. I'm gone. How much fun is Survivor? Yeah, I was blown out of the water today and didn't even know it. I've never had my torch snuffed. I've never had it put out, and here I am, I'm gone. I'm gone. Oh, fifth out of the game. I wanted the check again. Damn.

Trivia[]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • In a deleted scene from "Shark Attack", Mogo Mogo had already gone to Tribal Council to officially lay down Jenna Morasca's torch following her quit on Day 9, which explains why the tribe's original members already had their torches in this episode.[3]
  • A minor controversy arose during the Immunity Challenge. When Colby Donaldson and Rob Mariano faced off in the attack zone, host Jeff Probst ruled that Colby hit the water first and allowed Rob to proceed. However, it was pointed out in a frame-by-frame review after the episode that Rob's foot had actually hit the water before Colby's arm did, meaning that Colby should have been the one allowed to proceed. Jeff acknowledged that this ruling was a mistake on his part and clarified that contestants' contracts stipulate that he is the "sole arbiter and final call" during challenges.[4]

Other[]

  • This episode marks the first time a tribe switch took place after a Reward Challenge but before the next Immunity Challenge. This would next occur 36 seasons later in Survivor 44 in "I'm Felicia".
  • This episode marks the first time in her Survivor career that Shii Ann has attended Tribal Council without receiving any votes against her.
  • The episode title was said by Richard after he was voted out.
