I'm Survivor Rich is the fifth episode of Survivor 42.
Story[]
Night 9[]
Ika returns from Tribal Council. Rocksroy Bailey reveals that he was blindsided by the vote, stating that he has to work on his social awareness. Drea Wheeler and Romeo Escobar justify the move and offer their assurance, while Tori Meehan, who received Rocksroy's stray vote, expresses her annoyance at him under her breath. Although Drea and Romeo attempt to unite the Ikas and Tori ostensibly agrees, she declares her intent to flip at the first possible opportunity in a confessional.
Romeo |
“ | Tribal was a blindside for Rocksroy. Me and Drea pulled in Tori to vote for Swati and we decided not to tell Rocksroy. He's not really a social player and once he says something, he's gonna stick to it, so we knew he was gonna vote for Tori regardless. | ” |
Rocksroy |
“ | I feel a little betrayed, I got duped. I did not see this coming. Obviously, I'm not picking up on social cues. | ” |
Tori |
“ | 'Four strong' literally makes me laugh. I sit there and I just literally say, 'No, no, no, no, no.' I'm gonna be the first person to jump ship; I have no desire to do that. | ” |
Day 10[]
Taku is weathering a rainstorm in their shelter. Lindsay Dolashewich and Maryanne Oketch pass the time by chit-chatting about topics like Mario Kart, much to Jonathan Young's irritation. When the rain lets up, Jonathan takes the first step out of the shelter to get away from the noise, but Lindsay and Maryanne tease him by playing "hot and cold" while he looks for his canteen. He leaves the inanities for the ocean and returns with the catch of the day.
Jonathan |
“ | How much these girls talk drives me crazy. I don't know why they always feel like there can't be silence, but there isn't five seconds without one of 'em… (imitating chit-chatting noises) | ” |
Jonathan |
“ | I don't even know what they're talking about. I'm like, I'm outta here, I have to leave this situation because arguing about 'hot and cold' games, or anything like so little is just ridiculous. So, thank God we got fishing equipment, cause I'mma be in the water half the time, and I don't have to listen to Maryanne and Lindsay just constantly going at it about nothing. That's my escape, just getting in the water—it helps me a lot. If I'm alone in the water for two or three hours, I can come back to camp and deal with all this baloney. | ” |
While the fish are cooking, Jonathan uses a machete to chop some bamboo. Maryanne gets into an accident and accuses Jonathan of striking her foot, which he adamantly refutes. The two get into a tiff, but Jonathan realizes he has to keep it together and takes the diplomatic approach by apologizing to Maryanne before walking away, bringing the argument to an apparent resolution. However, it is clear that the cracks are starting to form as Jonathan vents about Maryanne in a private conversation with Lindsay, while Maryanne chastises him to Omar Zaheer, wondering if he knows that "pride is a deadly sin". Omar grows concerned about the possibility of his alliance fracturing.
Jonathan |
“ | Every time something little happens at camp, Maryanne makes it into a ten-outta-ten. But, I have to control myself, 'cause I can't lose it. Once I lose it, I'm gonna be labelled as a bad guy! I'm 6'4", I'm 250 pounds, and I just screamed at the little girl that's 5'2". As soon as that happens, it's over. | ” |
Maryanne |
“ | After we go and we left the bamboo, Jonathan immediately went to the water well with Lindsay and I started to get paranoid, like, now is he saying, 'Hey, let's go get Maryanne'? | ” |
Omar |
“ | This type of stupid fight that's rifting people apart is exactly what I don't want! Maryanne is annoying, but she has a potential Immunity Idol and she has an Extra Vote, like, we need her, and I guarantee you, come the merge time, if the other tribes see this sort of behavior, they'll jump on that right away! They'll pick her up, and before you know it, you're gonna be gone because you couldn't stop being petty. | ” |
Meanwhile, Hai Giang comments on the tense atmosphere on the Vati beach. Chanelle Howell and Daniel Strunk promise that they will let bygones be bygones if they both make the merge. Hai talks with Lydia Meredith, discussing which of the two is more dangerous. Hai believes that Daniel is more transparent while Chanelle is less so; Lydia believes both of them are threatening in their own way, but agrees that Chanelle is the better target to take out.
Hai |
“ | The Vati tribe right now, it's tense. When we're all around each other, it's smiles, but I don't trust these people, and it took until the first Tribal for me to realize that. Now, the two games that really blew up were Chanelle and Daniel—I have no trust for them. | ” |
Mike Turner tells Daniel he will wait for someone to get food before he starts a fire so as to conserve dry wood. Daniel offers to go spearfishing, but the tribe doubt that he will have much success. Hai and Lydia express confusion and contempt for the fact that Daniel's shoulder injury has put him out of challenges, but ostensibly not fishing. They joke about this with Chanelle and Mike, and they agree that Daniel's actions seem contradictory. Daniel returns with no fish, but remarks on the beauty of the reef. Mike expresses his frustration that he is not pulling his weight.
Daniel |
“ | The Vati tribe, in terms of morale, I give us a B. But in terms of actual survival performance, I give us a D-. We're running off of the fat that we have on our bodies, that's pretty much it. We need to go get fish! I'm as much a natural fisherman as much as a- arsonist is a natural fireman. But yet, it seems like the sort of thing that one must do in Survivor. Spearfishing is something that's always highlighted on Survivor—it always looks cool, you're using this nifty gadget to, like, see beautiful coral reefs and try to catch these glorious-looking fish. I think I was more snorkeling than fishing, but I was giving fishing my best shot. People forget that fun is important, they're just so focused on, like, (mockingly) 'Oh, the next vote is this, when's the merge,' it's like, calm down, you're on Survivor, just like enjoy yourself! | ” |
Hai |
“ | Daniel's arm has been dislocated since Day 1! But yet today, he's in the ocean fishing! (miming confusion) What?! | ” |
Mike |
“ | Daniel says he has to stay out of all the swimming challenges because he can't swim. You see how far away that coral reef is? We've carried Daniel from Day 1, hiding his shoulder, putting him out of challenges so it's not exposed. How long can you carry a guy before it becomes a true liability? | ” |
At Ika, Drea and Romeo decide to hunt for an idol. Romeo explains his affinity for Drea as an ally, believing it has to do with his upbringing and career working with strong women like Drea.
Romeo |
“ | We know that there's an idol out here, and, if there was an idol, I want myself or Drea to find it, because she's my number-one ally. The fact that Drea trusts me enough to go out and look for a Hidden Immunity Idol with her proves how important it is to have that one person that you can trust in this game, and I think that's Drea for me. Because I work primarily with women back home as a pageant coach, I like working with strong, independent women, and I think that's what I saw in Drea when I first met her; it was just an instant connection. One of my role models in life has always been my mom. She's just the strongest woman that I know, she moved to the U.S. and her entire family was back home in Central America, so she sacrificed a lot for me and my sisters, and that's why I feel like it's my duty to give back to strong, independent women, so I like to think that I'm also coaching Drea to become an even better Survivor player than she already is. And, today, we want to find that idol. | ” |
Drea finds the Beware Advantage hidden on a tree branch and is ecstatic. With no hesitation, she immediately unwraps the package and reads the instructions contained therein with Romeo. They learn that she has lost her vote until her idol is activated, so Drea proposes for Romeo to take her Extra Vote and vote on her behalf if need be. Upon reading the activation phrases, Drea realizes that Maryanne has already found the Taku idol, and hopes that Vati finds their idol soon.
Drea |
“ | It says 'Beware'. I already took a risk before with the Extra Vote, so if it's dangerous, I'm gonna do it. […] This is an idol! (laughs) Most women are stuck at camp making rice or whatever and I just didn't care, I went out to find an idol, so kudos women in the new era of Survivor 2.0, we can find idols too. We're just as good as men—probably better, actually, we're better than men. Sorry. | ” |
Drea |
“ | Right now, I don't have a vote. But, I have an Extra Vote, and if you have a right ally who can help you, you can maneuver around any kind of… bad juju this thing has. […] I have literally checked every single Survivor bucket list here. I have: Extra Vote, my amulet, and my idol. Currency is everything in Survivor, and… I think I'm Survivor rich! | ” |
Drea |
“ | Maryanne said something about bunnies! Instantly, I know: she has the other one. And so I am hoping that some Einstein on Vati finally finds this and can say it at the same time so then we can be done and over with this. | ” |
The Vati members discuss Mike's Beware Advantage. Mike proposes that he never says his phrase so that knowledge about his idol will be kept within Vati. The tribe agrees that this could be a valuable asset going into the merge.
Mike |
“ | I did find the Hidden Immunity Idol and everybody in our camp knows about it. But, I don't want nobody to know I have an idol from any other tribe, because it puts a target on my back. I'm balancing not activating my idol and not having a vote. I don't know if that's balls or stupidity. So, if I go to the Immunity Challenge and I hear a member of each other tribe chant their phrase, I have to make an immediate decision—do I say my phrase, or not say it? | ” |
Day 11[]
The tribes enter for the Immunity Challenge. Taku and Vati watch Ika enter and learn that Swati Goel has been voted out. Jeff Probst comments on Maryanne's shocked expression, and she segues into saying her activation phrase.
“ | It's the classic case of the bunny rabbit having dinner at the mailbox! | ” |
—Maryanne |
Jeff then asks the contestants about how they are coping with the elements. Exaggerating her hunger, Drea uses this opportunity to recite her phrase.
“ | This potato has skin, we have skin, are we all just potatoes? | ” |
—Drea |
Noticing that one member of each tribe has now said their respective phrase, Mike pipes up to say his phrase, spinning a story about being a soccer coach to cover his tracks. This activates all three idols and restores all three holders' votes, to Drea and Maryanne's relief.
“ | There is such grace in the game of soccer, it makes me cry. | ” |
—Mike |
Maryanne |
“ | Finally, yes! I've been waiting so long to just hear something back! | ” |
Drea |
“ | Oh, thank God! (cackles) I have my vote, and I have my idol. | ” |
Mike |
“ | I recite my phrase, which initially wasn't my plan. But honestly, it was a game-time decision. It was getting later and later in the tribe game and I really thought my vote was essential. (holds idol) So, this goes from the non-idol to the active idol. And guess who has it—it's a guy with two thumbs, (points to self) this guy! | ” |
Jeff then explains the mechanics for the challenge: Ramplified. To the tribes' disappointment, food is not on offer. However, the tribes will be playing for tarps, to their excitement given the Fijian downpours. Expressing that he has "very little value to add", Daniel raises his hand and sits out for Vati and the challenge commences.
Ika is the first to climb over the net obstacle, followed by Taku. Tori quickly releases Ika's key from the braids, while Omar struggles, allowing Chanelle to catch up after Vati's early setback. Tori's quick work with the braids gives Ika a big lead with the slingshot, and Ika becomes the first tribe to win the challenge. While Omar continues to falter at the braids, Lindsay offers advice while Jonathan shows his silent vexation.
Eventually, Omar figures the braids out and Jonathan ends up hitting Taku's first target before Vati makes any hits. Mike then hits Vati's first target, evening the score. In the end, Jonathan hits Taku's second target, making a comeback and narrowly winning his tribe immunity to send Vati to Tribal Council.
Jeff hands the idols to Ika and Taku, before telling Ika to send someone from Vati to the summit. Ika selects Lydia. Jeff then prompts Ika to send one member from either Ika or Taku to join Lydia on her journey; they select Rocksroy, and the pair head out. Ika and Taku return to camp, while Vati surrenders their flint before leaving. Hai expresses that attending Tribal Council will allow Vati to cut one of its disloyal members, to his excitement.
Hai |
“ | I'm actually really excited about losing today, because now I get to kind of trim the fat and Chanelle and Daniel are the fat of the tribe, because I trust them the least. They led me on when they drew the tribal lines, I knew the game was on. | ” |
Hai reminds his tribemates that whoever survives Tribal Council should return to camp as a solid family, and they agree. Chanelle and Daniel realize that they are the likely targets and request the opportunity to plead their case to Hai and Mike separately, which they accept. Daniel sees the irony in the fact that he now has to turn on his former number-one ally, but states that this was entirely because of Chanelle's lack of support at their previous Tribal Council.
Daniel |
“ | Chanelle and I feel the heat tonight, and I was ready to go to the end with Chanelle, and yet we're here because when push came to shove, she did not have my back, so why should I trust her going forward? | ” |
Daniel swears his allegiance to Hai, and Hai responds that he would prefer Chanelle to go home because he has more trust in Daniel. The two agree that Chanelle would likely drag the tribe down come the merge. Meanwhile, Mike promises the same to Chanelle in their conversation together, swearing that Daniel will go home. He says he will have to placate Daniel to keep him from playing his Shot in the Dark. Chanelle believes she will get her way because of Daniel's inability to contribute to tribe success.
Daniel |
“ | I think Chanelle needs to go because I agree with Hai, she's likely to flip at the merge, so if you know someone's gonna flip, it's better to get rid of them when you can than to wait for them to flip on you. | ” |
Chanelle |
“ | I think the consensus is, everyone wants Daniel gone. Daniel has one arm, he hasn't competed in any challenges. Not only that, I think people seeing him go swimming yesterday was also something that kinda set them over the edge. | ” |
Hai and Mike agree that, as long as the two of them and Lydia survive, it does not matter who goes home. They assess whom it would be better to boot and decide that, since they have the numbers, to split the vote in case something goes awry. Mike realizes that this plan hinges on Lydia's decision at the summit.
Hai |
“ | Both Daniel and Chanelle have felt as though they've re-integrated themselves back into the tribe. It's just… not nearly enough. Now that Mike has his vote, we have the majority of the votes between Lydia, myself, and Mike, that we can split up just in case one of them plays the Shot in the Dark or has an advantage. | ” |
Mike |
“ | At this journey, it's extremely important what Lydia does. The main thing that Lydia can't do—can't do—is take a chance for an advantage. If she loses her vote, we are in trouble! | ” |
At the summit, Lydia and Rocksroy are mesmerized by the view on their hike up the hill. Lydia talks about her struggles with body image, but Survivor has given her the confidence to embrace her body as it is. She hopes that the second half of the game will teach her even more about herself.
Lydia |
“ | Survivor breaks you down and everything is stripped away. I'm learning a lot about myself. One of those things is just being comfortable in my own skin. I've struggled, as most young women and just, like, young people in general, struggle with body image issues and, coming on Survivor was a really big challenge for me, not only just with the elements, but just, like, you see people very open with their bodies and, a big source of the way I started dressing was just 'cause I was trying to hide, but you can only be open out here. And, my body is perfect just the way it is and I feel like I have gotten more confident in it. It's not even halfway through the game and I'm just like, I've already accomplished so much. There's still more to see, there's still more to do, and it's just going to keep getting more and more beautiful. | ” |
Lydia and Rocksroy are cagey in their conversation, not wanting to disclose anything about their respective tribal dynamics. Lydia lies about her perception that she is on the bottom, while Rocksroy keeps his guard up throughout. They depart to make their decisions with little information about each other and each other's tribes.
Lydia |
“ | Even though I am in a decent position going into Tribal now, I mentioned I was kinda on the bottom. I'm just meeting Rocksroy, so I'm trying not to give too much information about our tribe. | ” |
Rocksroy |
“ | My first impression of Lydia was, she seemed more like someone that's in trouble. But of course, as I didn't, you don't wanna give your opponent too much information. | ” |
Lydia |
“ | I'm trying to just get a feel for how camp life is, who he trusts, and I got nothing. Rocksroy was being very cagey and I feel like I was as well. I think we both wanted to protect our tribe because we don't know where we're headed to in this game. | ” |
Rocksroy explains the instructions to the mechanic. Separately, Lydia and Rocksroy weigh their decisions against the little information they have gathered about each other. Rocksroy is compelled to risk his vote, but assumes that, since Lydia said she was on the bottom, she may "risk it for the biscuit". Not wanting to overplay his hand, he steps down and protects his vote. Meanwhile, Lydia argues that opportunities to gain advantages are scarce, but she cannot afford to lose her vote at a critical Tribal Council, so she also protects her vote.
Rocksroy |
“ | Coming from Vegas, don't gamble often. But when I do, I know that, when I'm up on the house, walk away. So, I'm gonna use my brain, and I'm gonna protect my vote | ” |
Lydia |
“ | It is so hard to get advantages in the game, but I- I think it scares me more to not have a vote going into a really important Tribal. (protects vote) | ” |
Lydia returns to Vati beach, content with her decision. She explains that the summit went down as Jenny Kim and Chanelle had previously recounted it, and told her tribemates that she protected her vote, to their approval. She then talks to Chanelle and Daniel separately to figure out what happened while she was gone, and promises each of them that they are on their side, even though she wants each of them gone for different reasons. With little time before leaving for Tribal Council, she touches base with Hai to make a decision together. He assures Lydia of her safety before asserting the criticality of this vote in determining his trajectory in the game.
Lydia |
“ | I'm very glad that I protected my vote. If circumstances were different, I definitely think I might have risked it for my own personal gain. But we're not in individual yet, we're going to Tribal tonight as a tribe and I just don't feel comfortable giving away the most important thing I have in this game. But now, I really wanna touch base with everyone to give me a rundown of what happened at camp. | ” |
Lydia |
“ | Daniel and Chanelle, definitely, they're very nervous, but they both think it's the other person going home. Chanelle, I don't fully trust her, and Daniel is a liability and at our last Tribal Council, he was tryna get me out. But, clearly, me and Hai are definitely running this vote. | ” |
Hai |
“ | Lydia gets back and I have to scramble to get some alone time with her because we are about to head to Tribal immediately. The merge is coming up any day now, so tonight's Tribal Council is monumental because not only does it affect the rest of my game, it's going to affect how the merge is going to play out.. I'm just nervous, because whether it be Chanelle or Daniel that goes into the merge with me will determine how well I do in this game. | ” |
At Tribal Council, Mike begins discussions by saying that Vati will remain solid even after losing a member. Daniel empathizes with his team-oriented approach to the game. Hai concedes that at least one member of his tribe is being lied to. Daniel jokes that Mike probably intends for the Vati family to stay united, literally until he passes on. He replies by joking about his old age.
Chanelle interprets Daniel's joke as an appeal to Mike's soft spot and does not buy the spiel. Daniel clarifies that he was being genuine in his comment, then reveals that he was a leukemia survivor to be open with his tribe. He analogizes deception in Survivor to Muhammad Ali's boxing career: as Muhammad Ali does not punch everyone he sees on the street, so do Survivor players not lie in their everyday lives, only out of necessity as part of the game.
Lydia attributes tonight's vote to loyalty and trustworthiness under the speculation that a merge is around the corner, leaving each tribe with only four representatives in a scenario where no tribe has the upper hand. Hai concurs, calling back to Vati's previous Tribal Council where everybody left blindsided. Daniel concedes that he is not one of the greatest players ever; Chanelle nods sardonically in agreement. He expects the average player to be burned at least once, and should he be the one that "burns" someone else, that he would ask for forgiveness. Chanelle agrees with Jeff's summary that the least trustworthy person will go home tonight. Mike hopes to be friends with whoever leaves tonight, but will put his feelings aside in the interest of playing the game. With that, the tribe proceeds to vote.
Jeff tallies the votes, and no advantages are played. He reads the votes to reveal a 2-2-1 tie; Chanelle and Daniel are tied, with Mike receiving a stray vote. Mike looks to see who cast the stray vote, and Chanelle shakes her head in denial. The tribe then proceeds to revote. Jeff reads the revote, and Daniel leaves heartbroken following a unanimous 3-0 vote. Before Vati returns to camp, Mike repeats that he kept his promise, and is angry about the lone "Mike" vote.
Challenges[]
Reward/Immunity Challenge: Ramplified
Four members of each tribe must work together to climb over a net obstacle. Once they have reached the other side of the net, one member must unbraid three ropes to release a key. The key would unlock a machete they would use to chop a rope, releasing sandbags. They must then use a slingshot to launch the sandbags and attempt to knock down two targets. The first two tribes to knock down both their targets win.
Reward: Large tarp and rope (1st place); Tarp (2nd place)
Additional Stipulation: The losing tribe must forfeit their flint.
Winners (in order of finish): Ika and Taku

Final Words[]
Daniel |
“ | I got totally blindsided. I would've preferred to execute the blindside, but at least I got a form of blindside, that's part of the Survivor experience. If I could've scripted my life, I probably wouldn't have given myself leukemia, right, and if I could've scripted Survivor, I probably would've had myself winning, but the beauty of life is that it's unscripted, that's how we find meaning in it. | ” |
