Good and Guilty is the second episode of Survivor 42.

Story[]

Night 3[]

Ika returns to camp from Tribal Council emotionally exhausted but unified after voting out Zach Wurtenberger together. Tori Meehan thanks her tribe for keeping her, and Rocksroy Bailey tells her she never had anything to worry about. However, the hunger is taking its toll on her. Tori digs in to find the mental fortitude to carry on as Drea Wheeler laments that the days will only get harder.

S42 romeo t
Romeo
It was devastating voting Zach out. We were hashtag, you know, the Skinny Guys. But the good part about tonight's vote was we made Tori comfortable, and that's where we need to keep her. It'll be easier when it's time for her to go.
S42 tori t
Tori
I have so much to celebrate, yet there was a part of me that's actually sad that it was Zach that went home, which, like, that makes me wanna cry. 'Cause that just shows how hard this is, that I would, for a moment, think like, 'Dang it, why isn't that me that gets immediate comfort,' and, you know, I get to sleep on a real bed and have food. And it's only three days in, so I am kinda scared of what's to come but, I'm just really trying to get myself back to that mental space of realizing that I'm living my dream come true and I don't want to change it for anything.

Day 4[]

On Vati, Chanelle Howell and Jenny Kim look for food. Though they find no breadfruit, they come across a live crab. They freak out at first, but overcome their fear to catch it and bring it back to cook.

S42 jenny t
Jenny
We found some hermit crabs. They were way bigger than I've ever seen! It startled me at first, I didn't wanna touch it to be honest. I'm a city girl, I'm still trying here.
S42 chanelle t
Chanelle
I don't love the wilderness, I don't love the jungle, I don't like spiders or mosquitoes. I thought that there would be someone who could be a provider, and, uh, it looks like I might have to be that person.

Chanelle cooks the crab, likening it to a New Orleans seafood boil. Chanelle tells Mike Turner that he can eat the crab legs and claws. The tribe enjoys their first family meal together, and are surprised by how the crabmeat tastes. However, Hai Giang's veganism forces him to sit out of the meal. He fears that this will weaken him and cause him to be seen as a liability by his tribemates. Meanwhile, Mike is eager to be eating "real food" and burgers in 24 days, and apologizes to Hai when he realizes he mentioned meat.

S42 hai t
Hai
Being a vegan out here on the island is very tough. So as my tribemates were enjoying the crab and having a good time, I was happy for them, but I'm struggling because a part of me feels as though I need to eat it to sustain myself and not be seen as a liability. Being in the elements without food, starving, is tough. And it all just came on top of me like a ton of bricks at once.

Chanelle and Daniel Strunk console Hai. Hai grapples with his morals and principles, realizing that the lack of rice forces him to eat meat. Thus, he believes that he can make an exception for Survivor just to give himself the strength to continue in the game. Chanelle and Daniel hug Hai before they walk back to the shelter. Hai gives in and eats the crabmeat, the first food that he has had in five days. He admits that he feels "good and guilty".

S42 hai t
Hai
When Jeff said there would be no rice, I knew I would have to make a conscious decision whether or not I would eat any fish or crab or sea life that we catch. I came out here to discover more about myself beyond just winning the money. As someone who loves animals, I obviously want to stay true to myself out here, but I'm not gonna be able to sustain myself on coconuts alone. So, any opportunity that I have to strengthen myself for the longevity of the game, I need to take it. I think the universe will understand in this one nuanced instance and eventually I'll be able to forgive myself for eating meat out here.

At Taku, patience for Maryanne Oketch's unfiltered ebullience is wearing thin, especially with Marya Sherron. Maryanne uses the machete to hack a log, causing Jonathan Young to move his seat away from her before she screams "Here's Maryanne," referencing The Shining. She then waves the machete around like a wand and announces "You're watching CBS," referencing Disney Channel, before singing the Survivor theme. She picks up a stick insect, and Omar Zaheer jokes that it probably wants her to put it down.

S42 marya t
Marya
Maryanne is on a hundred all the time, there is no downtime until we're sleeping.
S42 lindsay t
Lindsay
She's a really sweet girl and I do enjoy her, she's just very young, and she's excited about a lot of things, but at the same time, that's exhausting after a while. Not everyone can be that 'on' the whole time, so I think that does start to kind of rub people the wrong way.

Omar shares about his religion with his tribe. As a Muslim, he says he will be doing daily prayers and assures his tribemates that he is not looking for idols. Maryanne offers to weave a palm frond prayer mat for Omar, and Omar opens up to questions from any of his tribemates that wish to learn about his religion. Jonathan reciprocates, offering to share about Christianity. Lindsay Dolashewich admits that she is not "a great Jew".

Omar talks about his faith. As a devout Muslim, he is glad that his tribemates are equally devoted to their own religions, but are also open to accepting him and his religion. He thanks Maryanne for the prayer mat and does a morning prayer.

S42 omar t
Omar
Since 2001, the world has changed a lot and the perception of Muslims, we always have to worry about what other people think about us. But, I'm just a regular person who happens to have these beliefs, and I wanted them to know about me because you need to be your most authentic, genuine self in this game and in life, because if you don't understand where people come from or why they do things, you can't become accepting of people outside of your inner circle. Being a Muslim, it's so important for me. I've never taken a sip of alcohol, you know, I don't do drugs, I don't eat any pork, and I don't have sex before marriage. I am a 30-year-old virgin, I don't wanna be a 40-year-old virgin, but for me that is important and it's so nice to be around people who are so strong in their faith and are so supportive of me and mine.

At Ika, Rocksroy tends the campfire as Drea sits in the smoke to ward off the flies. Drea and Rocksroy consolidate their plan to vote Tori out next. In a confessional, she runs through her options: she is currently aligned with Rocksroy and Romeo Escobar, but believes that a women's alliance could be the way to go instead. She approaches Tori and Swati Goel with her idea, and uses her Extra Vote as leverage to seal the deal. Though Swati and Tori tell her they are in, Swati sees Drea's social game as a threat and considers blindsiding her instead. Seeing Swati as her number-one, Tori agrees.

S42 drea t
Drea
Last night at Tribal, when I got my Extra Vote, I was like Ahhh! Having the Extra Vote and the Amulet that I got on Day 1 with Hai and Lindsay is freaking awesome. But the game playing never stops. Right now, I have an alliance with Rocks and Romeo, but a potential girls' alliance could open my options more, and I know my Extra Vote gives me leverage. (laughs) Straight up!
S42 swati t
Swati
I love this possibility of a girls' alliance happening, but here's the thing: Drea is really, really good at pulling people in. She has so much sway and influence, and on top of that she has this Extra Vote advantage, and to me that's too much power in this game.
S42 tori t
Tori
I was maybe gonna go home in the last Tribal Council, I had terror, I had doubt, I had paranoia, and now, people wanna go after Drea. The game is shifting, and so for me, it's just this huge sigh of relief. I see the way forward now—and that's to get Drea out.

At Vati, Mike and Jenny are breaking wood for the fire. As Mike collects wood for camp, he makes it a point to search for Hidden Immunity Idols. He comes across the Beware Advantage. With little hesitation, he opens the package and learns that he has to say a phrase at an Immunity Challenge to activate his idol. He also discovers that, until then, he has lost his vote. He realizes he has to amp up his social game to protect himself. Before he returns to camp, he buries his package somewhere in the jungle.

S42 mike t
Mike
The game I'm playing right now is work hard around camp and lay low. But as I collect wood, as I collect coconuts, as I collect palms, my eyes are everywhere, looking around for a Hidden Immunity Idol. But I gotta tell you, it's much harder than you see sitting in your living room. This is dense, it- it's really like looking for a needle in a haystack. [...] It's incredible, I found the idol! Oh, my God! You know, it's a first, I can't believe, one of my bucket list items. Something in me said, 'Don't leave it.' I came to this game saying go big or go home, and I'm going big. How bad could it be?
S42 mike t
Mike
So my phrase is 'There is such grace in the game of soccer, it makes me cry.' I don't like soccer! As a matter of fact, when I coach my football teams, I told my kids it wasn't even a sport! But, I will cry for soccer, in this instance—never again. I found an idol, but I lose my vote, so there's a blessing and there's a curse. But no matter what, I'm stuck with this. So it's about adapting to the situation. Because of this, I need to focus more on relationships—it's the only way I can survive without a vote.

Back at Taku, Jonathan sees Omar struggling with a coconut and offers to teach him how to chop a coconut. Omar thanks him for his help. Jonathan then offers to make Omar a bracelet and a necklace. Omar confesses that he has never peed standing up until he was an adult, making his tribemates laugh. Jonathan and Omar see that they complement each other's differences, and agree to work as a pair. Jonathan considers his relationships on Taku: he is close with both Lindsay and Omar, and enjoys Maryanne's presence. However, he is unsure about Marya.

S42 jonathan t
Jonathan
Me and Omar, man, we're so different in almost every way. But being different can help you in this game.
S42 jonathan t
Jonathan
I can look in Omar's eyes and I see that he trusts me.
S42 omar t
Omar
Jonathan is my meat shield, and I'm his brain shield. So, am I going to Jonathan and saying, 'We ride or die, baby?' Yea, it's the odd couple.
S42 jonathan t
Jonathan
He's way more funny than I am, and every thing that he's good at, I'm not as good at, and vice versa. Together we make, like, the perfect human.
S42 jonathan t
Jonathan
We have me and Lindsay, who are very close to how we think and being super strong. And I love Maryanne and how much spunk she's got. The only one I'm not connected with is Marya.

In a group chat, Marya shares that her purpose for playing Survivor is to honor her brother, who passed from COVID-19 near the start of the pandemic. She talks about her brother and wants to find closure through Survivor, which has been difficult to do as a stay-at-home mom. Marya shows the tribe her necklace which has his face etched, and tells them she plans to bury it on the island.

S42 marya t
Marya
James was the first healthcare worker to die of COVID in the United States. He was a nurse in New York doing what he wanted, which was helping people, but I have not processed his passing, like we haven't had closure.
S42 marya t
Marya
Losing him is indescribable. I've been holding my breath for a year because my kids are home. You know, I'm tryna be this strong mom that keeps it all together, so being here on Survivor is about closure, and for me, that would be worth it, more than a million dollars.

Back at Vati, Mike tells Jenny that he has found the idol. Mike also decides to align with Daniel, hoping to use his strategic thinking to figure out what to do with the idol. He explains to Daniel that the idol is a "tri-way" Immunity Idol, but it has not been activated yet. When Mike leads Daniel to where he buried the idol, he realizes he cannot find it. Daniel is amused by what he sees as sloppy gameplay. Mike gets worried, especially because he cannot recall his activation phrase.

S42 mike t
Mike
Coming into this season, I swore to myself that I would not tell anybody if I found an idol. But me not having a vote, it changes everything. So I decide to tell Jenny, because she's my strongest ally out here right now, my number-one. I also wanna try and gain an ally, somebody smart, to help me, and I think Daniel is a no-brainer.
S42 mike t
Mike
When I found it, I buried it quick 'cause I didn't wanna get caught. And now I can't find it! I can't lose the idol, and what do I do? I mean, I don't even remember the phrase right now!
S42 daniel t
Daniel
Mike buried it where two trails intersect. And there's like 20 million trails here. I am mortified at this gameplay!

After scouting several forks in the road, Mike recovers the idol and tells Daniel that he cannot vote until the idol is activated. Daniel enjoys the twist, and intends to use this knowledge to his advantage. He convinces Mike that he is safe for the time being and does not need to activate his idol yet.

S42 daniel t
Daniel
Mike has lost his vote. That's a pretty, pretty big deal, but I have the mind for the numbers I think, between the two of us, and so I'm basically gonna help him figure out how to play this. There's a lot of moving parts to this idol, but I might be the true winner, because I have all the knowledge without any of the penalty right now.
S42 mike t
Mike
Daniel's got a great idea. At the next Immunity Challenge, I don't say the phrase, so nobody knows I have the idol except my alliance. It's perfect.

Daniel shares with Chanelle that Mike has lost his vote. They agree it would be best for their game that the idol is never activated; they could either vote Mike out or keep him convinced to not say the phrase. Chanelle is open to use this information against Mike should Vati have to attend Tribal Council.

S42 chanelle t
Chanelle
I love how aligned me and Daniel are. He's my number-one in this game, and we both agree, Mike's idol is a massive liability. And so the fact that he talks to Daniel is great. We can use that against him if we have to go to Tribal Council.

Day 5[]

The tribes enter the Immunity Challenge. Taku and Vati welcome Ika in, seeing that Zach has been voted out, to Maryanne's dismay. Maryanne reveals that Zach is "every type of white guy that [she] has a crush on", and Zach's elimination has prevented them from meeting. Maryanne jokes that she has been rejected by every guy she has ever liked, but Jeff Probst encourages her to "keep hope alive". Jeff takes the idol back from Vati, and Omar pulls back on Taku's idol, amusing his tribemates. Jeff then explains the mechanics of the challenge: Can't Find My Way Home. The tribes will also be playing for fishing gear as reward, and Jonathan is determined to win it. Ika will also be playing to earn their flint back. Vati sits Daniel out, and the tribes start the challenge.

Cant find my way home

Drea, Lydia, and Jonathan were selected as callers for Ika, Vati, and Taku respectively. Amidst the noisy cacophony, the tribes are evenly matched, though Vati gets their first two bags of puzzle pieces first. However, Jonathan's distinctive growls allow Taku to retrieve all their puzzle pieces first, and he leads his tribe to the puzzle station. Ika is narrowly behind, entering second place as Lydia struggles to see what is happening with Chanelle and Jenny at the spool, putting Vati in dead last. Rocksroy hits his groin against an obstacle, prompting Daniel to comment "You gotta protect the balls, Rocksroy." from the sit-out bench.

Finally, Vati has all three bags of puzzle pieces, and Lydia rushes to lead her tribe to their station. The tribes begin working on their puzzles. While Ika and Vati start from the outside going in, Jonathan opts to work from the inside out, but the tribes remain evenly matched. Lydia pulls off a comeback, allowing Vati to place first and win immunity. Within seconds of each other, Tori puts the last piece in for Ika and narrowly defeats Taku to win immunity.

Jeff congratulates both Ika and Vati, and tells them their fishing gear will be waiting for them at camp. He then takes the flint back from Taku before telling them he will meet them at Tribal Council. Maryanne likens her impending first visit to Tribal Council to a bad first date and hopes for the best.

S42 maryanne t
Maryanne
Tonight's Tribal, it's like going on the worst first date ever. You show up with the person you like, and in the end, they leave and you never see them again. And, hopefully, after Tribal Council, my heart isn't broken.

Returning to camp, Jonathan and Omar affirm their alliance with each other and look at their options. Omar believes that, in the long term, Maryanne is less trustworthy, but in the short term, will be more helpful than Marya. Regardless of their decision, they have to make both Marya and Maryanne feel safe to avoid a Shot in the Dark from messing up their plans.

S42 jonathan t
Jonathan
This is not an easy task. Marya is so wise and she's a mom, you know, she's got it more put together. Maryanne is still getting everything figured out, but I love Maryanne, like, I connect with her. When you play the Shot in the Dark correctly, you get immunity, so… whoo, you have to look at both of these women in the eyes and go, 'I am not going to vote you out.' No matter what, we have to bold-face lie, and right now, one of those two are gonna get their hearts broken.

Jonathan and Omar assure Maryanne that she is safe. Lindsay and Omar meet Marya in the ocean, and Marya proposes getting rid of Maryanne because of her frenetic energy, which she thinks is too much to live with for 26 days. Maryanne tells Jonathan she knows it is her and Marya on the chopping block, and Marya tells Omar and Lindsay the same. Both women plan to go against each other tonight. Marya feels there may be something amiss, and resolves to bring her die to Tribal Council.

S42 marya t
Marya
We all, on the surface, seem to be in-sync with who it should be, but I could be a huge fool, like maybe they're hiding something; there's something more there, so I'm bringing my Shot in the Dark to Tribal, no question.

Maryanne attempts to control her paranoia, but is nervous that she may have lost her vote at the summit on Day 2. Thus, she hunts for an idol, and is caught by Lindsay and Marya, who see through her lie that she was looking for flowers. Lindsay is unsettled by Maryanne's frantic behavior.

S42 maryanne t
Maryanne
I'm terrified, plus, there's a chance I have no power at all. On Day 2, I risked my vote to either A, get an Extra Vote, or B, lose my vote at this Tribal Council. Literally, my life isn't even in my hands, and they could just kick me in the dirt. So what do nervous people do? They look for idols.
S42 lindsay t
Lindsay
She cannot control herself! I feel like Maryanne does get flustered under pressure, like one of the things I look for in an alliance is, they don't panic and like, burn to the ground and take me down with them.

Jonathan, Lindsay and Omar strategize, and Omar says he values people who will gel together socially. Lindsay and Omar agree that Marya's loyalty may be an asset. However, Omar believes Maryanne's energy may be crucial to tribe morale and challenge performance. He jokes to Lindsay and Marya that Maryanne may find romance at Ponderosa with her crush Zach. As Taku walks to Tribal Council, Omar laments that this family of five is about to lose a member.

S42 omar t
Omar
It would be so difficult to see Marya go when we've connected so strongly, because she's lost her brother and she's seeking closure out here, so my heart is literally breaking because she might be going home tonight. I actually trust her more than Maryanne—she's a ball of energy, she's a wildcard. But, Maryanne brings life to the camp and she has the hustle that we need to battle two other tribes, because now Taku's down to four people after tonight. Up until now, we have been a family, but the sun's gonna set and someone's dream is gonna get crushed.

Jeff welcomes Taku to their first Tribal Council and gets the members to light their torches. Jeff comments on Omar's excitement at attending Tribal Council, but draws attention to the truth that Tribal Council is a ceremony where "death happens". Marya agrees with Omar that Taku has become a tight family over the past five days, and it would be difficult to cut anyone off. Omar invokes Darwin's theory of evolution as an analogy: because of the Shot in the Dark, everybody has to think that they are safe, but not everybody can be safe. Jonathan thinks that strength in Survivor comes in numerous forms—physical, mental, and social—but all of them are necessary for success; Lindsay agrees. Jeff remarks that not all five Taku members can be correct in their assumption that this vote will make them stronger, and Lindsay replies that it does get tricky when it comes to balancing paranoia and trust.

Jeff then asks about how the Shot in the Dark has impacted strategy. Maryanne concurs that it adds more complication to the game, forcing alliances to consider multiple "subsections" to their plans. Maryanne pleads her case, wanting to learn more and spend more time with her tribe; she jokes that does not want to be sent to meet Zach. Jeff comments that, even in the danger of Tribal Council, Maryanne still has love on her mind. She replies that she is insecure from being a 23-year-old who has yet to have a romantic relationship. Even though her end goal is to win the game, she wants to be able to stop and smell the roses, enjoying the little things along the way.

Conceding that it would be hard to boot Maryanne, Marya explains her strategy in the game. She wants to withdraw from being the "mom" like in the real world, putting herself first instead of falling into the caretaker role. Lindsay admits that the vote will be difficult either way; it will be hard to balance personal relationships and optimal gameplay without having one overshadow the other. Jonathan concludes the discussion by saying that there is a line between emotions and the game—"it's that simple".

Marya snuff s42e02

The tribe goes to vote, and Maryanne discovers that she has received an Extra Vote from her gamble at the summit. She pockets it and returns to her seat after casting her vote. Omar steps up to vote, and is shown writing "Mary" on the parchment. Jeff then tallies the votes and returns to the podium.

When prompted, Marya steps up and hands Jeff the Shot in the Dark scroll. Jeff opens it to reveal that Marya is "Not Safe". Jeff then reads the votes, and Marya is voted out unanimously, 4-0. On her way out, she wishes her tribe good luck, and Jeff sends Taku back to camp.

Challenges[]

Reward/Immunity Challenge: Can't Find My Way Home
One caller for each tribe must guide two pairs of tribe members around a series of obstacles to retrieve three bags of puzzle pieces. In order to do this, each tribe must perform three tasks while blindfolded: unscrew a handle to release one bag; unspool a rope from a winch to release a second bag; and dig through sawdust to retrieve a final bag. Once all three bags have been returned to the caller, the caller will lead their tribemates to a puzzle station. The caller will guide their still-blindfolded tribemates to complete a circular jigsaw puzzle. The first two tribes to finish win.
Reward: Fishing gear
Additional Stipulation: The losing tribe must forfeit their flint, though they can win it back if they win the next Immunity Challenge.
Winners (in order of finish): Vati and Ika

My brother would tell me that he's very proud and shake it off and keep living, you know take risks and push myself outside of my comfort zone. I had a lot of fun playing Survivor, I got a lot in five days. Survivor is like parenting; it's super hard and yet I love it in every possible way.
