Expedition Robinson 1997 is the first season of Expedition Robinson and the first season of the Survivor franchise.

After surviving 47 days in Tengah Island, Malaysia, police officer Martin Melin defeated tourist guide Kent Larsen in a 6-2 jury vote to become the franchise's first ever Sole Survivor.

Production

SVT first bought the rights to the show in late 1996, and after casting opened in February 1997 nearly 7,000 people applied. Filming took place in Tengah Island, Malaysia, began in May 1997 and finished in June of the same year. The show was hosted by Harald Treutiger, a Swedish journalist and TV presenter.

Format

• Game Length: The game lasted 47 days.
• Tribe Composition: The sixteen castaways were divided into two tribes of eight.
• Merge: The tribes merged on Day 22 with ten contestants remaining.
• Sole Vote at Final Four: The winner of the final four individual Immunity Challenge was the only player eligible to vote at Tribal Council.
• Final Tribal Council Format: Two finalists faced a jury comprised of the eight most recent castaways to be voted out.
• Tiebreaker: In an event of a tied vote, a revote would take place. If a deadlock occurred, the tied players would have to draw lots to determine who would be eliminated.

Trivia

• As the first reality show in Sweden to make it to TV, the show received negative publicity after the suicide of Sinisa Savija, the first contestant to be voted out. The show's remaining episodes were edited slightly after it, however there is some evidence the publicity may have actually helped, rather than hindered, the format's success.
• The series cost over 27 million SEK to make, and was Swedish television's most expensive show ever at the time of its premiere.
• The ratings for the final attracted over half the Swedish population.
