Crocs, Cowboys and City Slickers is the fifth episode of Survivor: Guatemala.

Story[]

When pounding rain takes its toll on a tribe, one member voices frustrations by calling out some of the others. An incredible Reward is won after one castaway blazes through the Challenge. One self-absorbed Survivor annoys the tribe with endless stories of a glamorous life beyond Survivor.

—Episode Synopsis[2]

Night 11[]

As the new Nakúm tribe returns to camp from Tribal Council, a betrayed Margaret Bobonich confronts Judd Sergeant over crossing old tribal lines in voting out Brooke Struck. Judd, however, explains his actions by saying that it is a cutthroat game for a million dollars and he does not care what everyone else thinks of him after Tribal Council. Judd considers voting out Margaret next.

Day 12[]

The sun rises on Yaxhá, and Blake Towsley is sitting alone by the water, thinking about his time in the jungles of Guatemala. He feels secure in this new tribe after the tribe switch, due to there being himself and the three other tribe members who came from Nakúm. At camp, a large beetle lands directly on Amy O'Hara, which causes her to freak out and try to swat at it. Brandon Bellinger gives a confessional about in his daily life in Kansas, he's used to living with the hicks and rednecks that live on the farms, and not someone like Amy. Amy asks about how the process of growing wheat is done, which Bobby Jon Drinkard replies that the wheat seeds are placed in the ground and planted, and how the land is tilled. Asked about what brand of tractors and equipment they use, even the Ivy League student Brian Corridan pipes in with the other guys with John Deere.

Most of these people I probably wouldn't be friends with outside of the game. They come from different parts of the country. You know, I'm very New England, I'm very blue-state, and they're very Texas and, you know, from Tulsa, Oklahoma or...yeah, it's just not my style... You know, they're good people, so I don't dislike them at all, but they're just not the kind of people I'm used to hanging out with... Our tribe is a very religious tribe, we say grace before every meal, we pray before every challenge, we thank Jesus for everything, you know, and I'm not a religious person at all, but I'm not gonna object to it, that'd be stupid. You'd be stupid to say "Uh, you know what, guys? I don't wanna thank Jesus for this meal, thanks." because then they'd vote me right out, that's dumb. Even if I object to something, you have to grin and bear it. That's the strategy out here.

At the Reward Challenge, Jeff Probst informs Yaxhá of Brooke being voted out. Jeff talks about how hot it's been since the tribes first started playing, then goes over the rules of the challenge. Both tribes are excited to see margaritas, chips, and guacamole dip, but shocked when Probst adds in a floating croc-proof swimming cage. Brandon quickly flies through the first two ropes with a sharp stone. Bobby Jon is hacking away at the log with a machete, while Jamie Newton is still trying to cut away at the rope. Yaxhá races to the top of the platform, with a huge lead. Danni Boatwright chops the rope, and Yaxhá fly by on the cart while Jamie is still working on the rope. In particular, Bobby Jon throws his legs high in the air while on the cart, whooping and hollering, as it races down to the finish.

Returning to camp, Yaxhá is absolutely shocked to see how well constructed their swimming cage is, and they excitedly run towards it to inspect it. Amy in particular was blown away by the size of it, and the lounge chairs as well. Brandon feels good about winning this reward for his tribe, speaking in confessional about giving his 110%. Tribe spirits are exceptionally high at the moment, as Brian plainly states in confessional that Yaxhá is on cloud nine right now.

Brandon used that rock like an axe on that rope. We got a new superhero on our team, and, uh, I know Kansas is lovin' him, and so am I.

Over on Nakúm, Jamie is absolutely distraught and down on himself after losing reward for his tribe. Judd tries cheering everyone up, but it falls on deaf ears with Cindy Hall. Stephenie LaGrossa was not happy to see Bobby Jon celebrating like he did and wants to knock him out, talking in confessional about how his cheering like a girl grates her nerves. She does break down emotionally during the confessional, stating that she doesn't want to cry in front of her tribemates, and how much it sucks to lose. Torrential rain soaks Nakúm's camp as Stephenie continues her confessional that she feels constantly defeated and that she's always on a tribe that flat-out sucks, though she hesitates when she says that.

Night 13 & Day 14[]

Yaxhá are huddled under an umbrella while the torrential rain comes through, except Blake and Brian, who seem to be sleeping under a dry spot in the shelter. Amy talks about how the tribe talks about how Blake is a "golden boy" who's always got a great story to tell.

Brian has come up with a new game, called "Bait Blake", where he's simply poking at Blake to ask him about certain things that would make Blake sound like a fool or better than everyone else, and so far it seems to be working.

Tree Mail arrives at Nakúm, and Stephenie and Lydia bring it back to camp with her. An object is included that appears to be some sort of flail attached to a rope. Stephenie talks about how she badly wants to snap this losing streak she's on. Lydia Morales channels her inner Mighty Mouse, singing her version of "Here I Come To Save The Day", cutting up some food, and doing the "pancake dance" while trying to lift the tribe's spirits, and it appears to be working.

S11 lydia t
Lydia
So many things have been, you know, getting us down and out lately, and this morning I got up and I said to myself "You know, forget about all the crap about being down and out", you know, "I wanna be a motivator person today!"

At the Immunity Challenge, Probst talks about how important teamwork will be to win this challenge, where the first tribe that catches five balls wins the Immunity Idol. Brian and Lydia are the designated launchers. Yaxhá scores the first point in the challenge, but Nakúm steal a point from Blake. Lydia launches a perfect shot right into one of the Nakúm baskets for their second point, but Yaxhá ties the score at two apiece. Nakúm takes the lead again, and steal another point, giving them a 4-2 lead. Lydia launches another ball far to the left, and Nakúm barely manage to catch it, winning immunity. Jamie quickly gets back at Bobby Jon after the Reward Challenge on Day 12, screaming "Who's smilin' now!?", and Bobby Jon looks visibly angry at Jamie's taunting.

Yaxhá, not happy about the loss, are sulking around camp. Brian points out that there's four old Nakúm members to 3 old Yaxhá members, and he hopes that he won't be the odd man out when Yaxhá goes to Tribal Council later that night. Brian and Gary Hogeboom talk about wanting to get rid of Blake, and they quickly agree on it being the plan. Gary goes to Bobby Jon and talks about the idea of voting out Blake. Bobby Jon talks in confessional that he feels it isn't the right time to vote someone out to whom he gave his word. Gary later goes to Danni and Amy with the same idea. Danni thinks about it in confessional, and goes off to talk with Brandon about the tribe is beginning to think about voting Blake out. Brandon, however, openly tells Danni that he doesn't feel comfortable voting for Blake. As the day goes on, Blake tells another story about his life, which Danni feels is straight out of a college fraternity and she's slowly getting sick of it, and also in confessional, talks about hating being the swing vote as it's a part of this game she doesn't feel comfortable with being.

At Tribal Council, Probst greets Yaxhá and asks about the storm from the night before. Gary answers that it was a character building night, pointing out that Blake and Brian were still in the shelter sleeping while the remainder of the tribe huddled by the fire to try and keep it alive. As Blake is speaking, Amy shouts out "Golden Boy", and the tribe laughs. Blake confirms Probst's assumption that Golden Boy is his nickname around camp. Probst correctly points out that Blake was gasping for air after the 11-mile hike at the start of the game. Gary and Amy both talk about the tribe switch, simply stating that the numbers disadvantage doesn't exist to them and that they're going to be loyal to this new tribe. Bobby Jon answers Probst's question of how tough this vote will be, saying that every Tribal Council vote is tough on him, and that he doesn't want to end somebody's dreams, instead wanting to keep dreams alive. Probst closes discussions and the tribe votes. Blake may have been a huge help to the success of Yaxhá, but his obnoxious demeanor around camp would be his downfall, as he was blindsided in a 5-2 vote.

Challenges[]

Challenge: Slave To The Grind
Both tribes race to station 1, where one tribe member cuts a rope with a sharp stone. Once they cut through the rope, they will release two handles that they will take with them to the second station. At station 2, a different tribe member will chop through a log to a second rope, and once both the log and rope are cut, they will release two more handles. They take the four handles with them, then four different tribe members will race up a platform and put them into a turnstile and begin cranking it, bringing a cart up the hill. The six tribe members that have competed get into the cart, and the final tribe member cuts the final rope, releasing the cart down the hill. The first tribe to the finish wins reward.
Reward: Chips, drinks, and a croc-proof swimming cage
Winner: Yaxhá

Challenge: What's For Launch?
Each tribe divides themselves into two groups of three. Each group spreads out into the field, holding a Mayan catch net. The last member from each tribe will alternate launching balls for the groups in the field to try to catch. The first tribe with five catches wins immunity.
Winner: Nakúm

Voting Confessionals[]

Only Brian and Blake's voting confessionals were shown in the episode. Brandon and Gary's votes were also shown. Danni was shown writing a "B" on her parchment paper.

(voting against Blake) Blake, this is something I really didn't wanna do, but, even the way the votes are going tonight, you'd be going home anyway, so, therefore, the only thing I can do is stick with an alliance, and that's what you'd want me to do. That's what I want you to do.
S11 danni t
Danni
(voting against Blake) This was a really hard decision for me. You're a great guy, but I think that there's so many things you've experienced in life that others haven't had a chance to yet, and that's why I wanna give them the opportunity to play the game further.
S11 gary t
Gary
(voting against Blake) Blake, one or two many rich kid stories for me. I'm sure you'll turn out to be a great, young man once you get rid of your wild side. I just hope you start treating women as equal, and not as an object.
S11 brian t
Brian
(voting against Blake) You may be the Golden Boy, but I'm platinum. I'm just trying to keep my chances in this game alive. I hope it's you.
S11 blake t
Blake
(voting against Brian) Brian, you're an extremely compassionate kid, and, and you've been an amazing part of our team. Um, I did form a lot of bond with my original guys. You know, I think that of the three people on the original Yaxhá team, you're the weakest right now. Um, it's nothing personal. These things happen.
S11 amy t
Amy
(voting against Blake) I'm voting for you, Blake. Um, anything to deflect the heat off of me. I'm really gonna miss your stories, but I think some of your stories, your extravagant stories, made people think that you already have a lot of money. Good luck.
S11 brandon t
Brandon
(voting against Brian) Brian, don't take offense, man. I just had to keep my word to another person.

Final Words[]

S11 blake bw
Blake
I didn't see it coming. I don't understand the reason for why. That's what I am kinda perplexed right now. And I'm kinda angry. You know, I stepped it up in the few challenges and I think that they realize it's time to get out somebody strong. Why would you do that? That makes no sense but you know, you don't want all the strong players, I guess. Again, playing the odds, I don't understand why it happened.
