Create a Little Chaos is the fourth episode of Survivor: Philippines.

Story

Night 8

At Matsing, the three remaining tribe mates are trying to light a fire, as it is pouring rain and their fire went out. Russell is busy planning the greatest comeback with Denise and Malcolm, and he's not quitting yet.

Day 9

At Kalabaw, the rain has finally let up and everyone gets busy doing chores. Since Jonathan has the hidden Immunity Idol, Jeff decided to align with him and Carter to ensure his safety in the game. Meanwhile, the women are looking forward to the merge so they can bring more people on to their side and increase their numbers.

At Matsing, Russell is a little suspicious of Malcolm and Denise because they haven't talked about what happens next with their tribe. In the meantime, since he has the clue for the Immunity Idol, he is still searching for it because he's certain he is going to need it.

Denise caught Russell covering something up with a banana leaf and is wondering if maybe he found something that he is trying to hide. Denise confides in Malcolm and while Russell is at the beach, and they go through his belongings but find nothing.

There is a argument between RC and Abi-Maria because RC broke her trust over the hidden Immunity Idol clue. Meanwhile Pete is hoping the rift continues because he wants RC gone since she is a strong player. Lisa is happy, since the heat is off her.

Day 10

At the Immunity Challenge, one at a time the tribemates have to carry two pots or rice, once they are collected they have to put them on posts and smash the pots with a wrecking ball, the first tribe to finish wins a steak BBQ, and the second tribe to finish wins a few veggies and a wok to cook it in. Because there are only three people left on Matsing, the other tribes have to sit out three people each, they decide to sit out the women.

Tandang has the lead with Matsing behind them, Kalabaw is desperate to catch up. Tandang wins immunity and steak reward, Kalabaw wins immunity and reward, and Matsing loses for the fourth time in a row. Russell is pissed and starts talking to God in front of everyone, and Jeff tells him that he's not a superhero. Russell replies with telling Jeff that he was made with God's hand and he is excellence, he is not supposed to fail.

At Matsing there is disbelief, frustration and Russell is really worried that he is going to be voted out. Russell tells Denise that he is pissed that they lost – he then goes on to confide in her that he got beat up as a child and used to go to school scared, long story short, he caught one of the guys that used to beat him up and punched him right in the face. Russell didn't like the way the other boy looked at him and from that day forward he didn't want to cower from anything.

Malcolm and Denise have Russell convinced that he is the swing vote and they want to vote each other off.

At Tribal Council, everyone has there bags packed and claim they are unsure who is going home. Jeff does the rounds and asks everyone why they should stay in the game and they all have their reasons why they are the best to stay in the game.

Time to vote, Russell votes for Malcolm and Malcolm for Russell, it's all up to Denise's vote. The fourth person voted out of Survivor Philippines is Russell.

Challenges

Reward/Immunity Challenge: Swing Break
Tribe members would transport clay pots using a yoke. They would then carry the yoke to a muddy course and bamboo obstacles and set the two pots on pedestals. The player would then go back to the starting mat, crawling under the bamboo obstacle. Once all pots have been set, one tribe member must swing a wrecking ball, attempting to smash the pots. First two players to smash all their pots would win the challenge for their respective tribes.
Reward: Tribal immunity for the first two tribes to finish; plus steaks, vegetables, and spices for first place, and vegetables and spices for second place.
Additional Stipulation: Both winning tribes may trade their reward items for a tarp.
Winners (according to finish): Tandang and Kalabaw

Voting Confessionals

(voting for Malcolm) I'm only making this vote because you're just gonna be too big a threat going forward, but you are a great kid.

Russell

(voting for Russell) Sorry, brother.

Malcolm

Final Words

Right now, it's just utter shock. I was just completely blindsided. It's been a rough ten days, weather-wise, dealing with my tribe, which was definitely dysfunctional in so many different ways. And so, this is just the straw that breaks the camel's back. And it's obvious me and Survivor don't get along, so I think I'm done with this.

Trivia

Behind the Scenes

Other

  • This marks the first time since "The Great White Shark Hunter" that a starting tribe dwindled down to two members.
    • Coincidentally, both of these tribes, Ulong and Matsing, were blue tribes.
  • This is the first episode since "Apple in the Garden of Eden" where a tribe goes to Tribal Council for the fourth consecutive time.
  • Russell's vote for Malcolm at this episode's Tribal Council made Denise the last Matsing tribe member with no votes against them.
  • Russell's vote for Malcolm marks the first time he did not vote for the person voted out.
  • With Russell's elimination, he became the first Survivor contestant to play more than once and not make the merge/jury in any his seasons.
  • This episode ties the record for highest percentage of people immune; 80 percent of the people remaining were either on Kalabaw or Tandang. The other episode with 80% immune was "Neanderthal Man", where Stephenie and Bobby Jon faced off in the infamous fire-making challenge.
  • Russell's prediction about Denise winning at Tribal Council eventually comes true, as she wins against Mike and Lisa at the Final Tribal Council, earning 6 of 8 votes to earn the title of Sole Survivor
  • Denise is the only woman to participate in the challenge.
  • This episode was nominated for Outstanding Cinematography for Reality Programming at the 65th Emmy Awards.[2]
  • The episode title comes from a line spoken by Pete in one of his confessionals, referring to his strategy to cause chaos on the Tandang tribe.
