María del Carmen Borrego Campos is a contestant from Supervivientes 2024.

A well-known Telecinco personality, Carmen split viewers and often angered hosts for her perceived reluctance to do challenges and her difficulty in adapting to castaway life. She left the show on Day 21 on medical advice, returning to Spain and becoming a frequent guest on the show from Madrid.

Carmen Borrego

Supervivientes[]

Carmen mostly stayed under the radar for the first episode, yet attracted ire from host Jorge Javier Vázquez after initially deciding to sit out the second challenge, to which he reacted with "'I know I'm not going to do it well' - that's a losers' excuse and is not the spirit of the show." After that, she decided to play, yet quit halfway through, at which Jorge was less than impressed. After being voted as the contestant with the best helicopter jump, she got to choose which tribe she joined.[3]

Carmen quickly found an enemy in Ángel Cristo Jr. and formed an alliance against him with Kike Calleja, Miri Pérez-Cabrero, Claudia Martínez and Mario González.[4] She also refused to play the reward challenge in the second week due to dizziness (the challenge was Sumo at Sea), and thus gave the Red Tribe (Playa Olimpo) victory.[5]

By the third week on the island, Carmen was struggling to eat and was starting to faint, causing her evacuation by medical staff. She found a friendship with Arantxa del Sol, who had previously tried to vote against her, yet in doing so gained the ire of Pedro García Aguado, who was being targeted by Arantxa's alliance. She returned to the game after a day under medical supervision, yet was later removed once more from the game after she continued to feel unwell.[6] On Day 21, host Jorge Javier Vázquez said to Carmen that the medical team had advised that she quit the game due to her heightening anxiety. She was allowed a conversation with her husband José Carlos before returning to Spain.[7]

Post-Supervivientes[]

Fans of the show questioned the merits of casting Carmen so soon, given her well-publicised grief over the recent passing of her mother, popular journalist María Teresa Campos. A critic in El Mundo suggested a more sympathetic argument that, while she may have wished to go on the show to legitimately prove to herself that she could overcome it, ultimately she and Telecinco should have realised she wasn't capable of doing well on the programme. In concentrating on Carmen's personal difficulties, many fans believed she received a disproportionate amount of screentime and upset the balance in what was generally a much stronger cast than usual.[8]

Another twist in Carmen's participation came after her departure from the show, in that her son gave a controversial interview to a tabloid magazine while she was in Honduras, blaming her for the breakup of his marriage. Telecinco asked her sister María Terelu Campos to give her the news, which she rejected as a set-up against her and criticised him for delivering a blow knowing full well she couldn't respond (and host Jorge Javier Vázquez agreed).[9]

Fans were divided also over her personality as a castaway - some found her diva style endearing and enjoyed her consistent refusals to take part in challenges; while others believed she hogged much of the screen time and took the focus away from the rest of the cast. Her well-publicised family issues, including her son's disastrous magazine interview, also provided an influential subplot for much of the rest of the series.

On 9 April Carmen left Supervivientes 2024 for good, saying "I would prefer to have a breakdown at home, not on a set."[10]
