Burly Girls, Bowheads, Young Studs, and the Old Bunch is the second episode of Survivor: Vanuatu.
Story[]
Day 4[]
At Lopevi, the men talk about how cold the previous night was, and attempt to make a fire the way J.P. taught them. John P., Travis, and Chris. get a small flame, and attempt to keep it alive. Right then, it starts raining and the fire dies out.
Travis |
“ | Last night was freezing cold. The standing joke this morning was, "Well, how was your sleep this morning?" My answer was, "I slept like a baby. Woke up every three or four minutes and cried." (chuckles) It's not good. We need fire for heat and just for food, 'cause we're getting so drained. I want to eat something cooked so bad. | ” |
Chris |
“ | It's been pretty tough…a lot tougher than I thought it would be. Nothing positive's really happened for us. We need something to boost our morale. | ” |
At Yasur, the women seem to be holding up as well as the men. Some of the women support Lisa to help her climb a tree and cut down some plantains for the tribe. They attempt to cook the plantains, which do not taste good, and boil a coconut, but they find maggots inside as they are sharing it. Twila does not seem to care and decides to eat the coconut, despite al the maggots.
Mia |
“ | Day four. It's going rough. It's just getting unreal--the circumstances and our living conditions., and it's about 1,000 times harder than I thought this was going to be. | ” |
Eliza |
“ | It's just…horrendous. The beach is uncomfortable, the water's uncomfortable. It's freezing at night, everything is damp. Like you always feel wet and cold. I mean, it's beautiful, like, looking at it, but, like, to live here, it's just so miserable. I think someone was saying last night that being here is like being in prison because we do not have nearly enough food, and then we have these unripe, disgusting plantains that when you cook 'em just taste like burnt…mush. | ” |
Dolly starts to realize how intense Survivor is and gets emotional as she hugs Ami and Twila. Twila thinks the "sorority girls" need to toughen up and says they are "not mature enough", like Scout called them.
Dolly |
“ | Just not eating and not sleeping at night, and the…maggots…and it's just all sinking in. (tearfully) It's…it's rough. Like, I'm having fun. I'm not…I'm not complaining at all. I'm so happy to be here. I jsut am hungry and tired. | ” |
Twila |
“ | I don't know . These young ones--I don't know if they thought this was a joke. I don't know what they was thinking. If it comes down to eating maggots, I'm going to eat maggots. To me, if there was, they were cooked. They're good. Protein. Eat 'em. Shut up. Sorority girls, like…like Scout calls 'em--they're not mature enough. They're not physically strong enough. They just…they just wear me out. They just don't understand the game, I guess. if they want to be pampered, they need to go back to the Holiday Inn. | ” |
Back at Lopevi, J.P. asks Travis if his name came up at all before last night's Tribal Council. Travis tells him it did and that he is a dangerous threat, even claiming his gameplay is based on him having a wife and four kids. J.P. asks Travis if his outlook would be different if he himself had kids, and Travis tells him he would be playing the game different, which J.P. took as he would play the game like Travis.
John P. |
“ | Tribal Council last night was very intense, and it was en eye-opener. As of right now, it's myself, John, and Brady. We're kind of like the physical, young, vibrant guys in the tribe. Then you have the older crowd: the Sarge, Chad, Rory, Travis, and Chris. Those aer five guys. Right now, it's five against three. Those aren't good odds. | ” |
The tribes show up for the Reward Challenge. Brady and Eliza start trying to walk around their tribemates, but both fall into the water and have to start over. Eliza manages to get across the balance beam. As Brady is getting closer to finishing, Julie starts to walk across, but quickly falls off the beam. Brady and Julie both get across, and John Kenney starts, but ends up falling off and having to restart. Twila is next for the women, and takes awhile before eventually getting across, giving them a 4-1 lead over the men. Ami accidentally touches Dolly and Mia at the same time and has to start over, thought she manages to go quickly again, letting Leann and Dolly get across, giving them the win.
The men return to camp and Rory complains about Mia dancing her way to victory, calling her classless. Sarge is not bothered by Mia's dance, and talks to the other men about Rory defaming another player for winning, and they seem to agree that he is "wrong as rain."
Day 5[]
At Yasur, Scout and Twila are making fire and everyone is enjoying a new day. A few of them notice a chicken nearby and slowly follow it, and as soon as Leann catches up with it, she notices it is a female and is laying an egg. Twila catches up, ready to kill her, and Leann tells her to stab the chicken. She struggles to stab it as she gets ready, but as she aims for the stab, the chicken runs off and they try to grab her, but she gets away. Twila picks up the 5 eggs the chicken laid earlier, which they consider a blessing as they are boiling the eggs. Unfortunately, one of the branches in the fire gives out, and the pot falls in puts the fire out.
By this point, the women are split in two groups: older women and younger women, and Ami knows who is part of what group. Dolly tells Twila that she would have been voetd out if they went to tribal council first, but they see she is a hard worker and cannot vote her out. They agree the most expendable person is Eliza.
Ami |
“ | The good news about being a tribe of al women is that we care about each other, we want each other to succeed. We haven't had to start voting people off yet, and I think we can win the next challenge. But I definitely see groups forming. The two groups that were formed I think ar elike the older generation and then the younger generation. That diversity in age has really separated everybody. The younger group would be, um, Mia, Julie, Dolly, Eliza, and Lisa, which I think she likes being in the younger group. And the older group has been more like Scout and Twila, and I think Leann's more in the older group. | ” |
Dolly |
“ | Twila is just wanting to know that she is part of a majority group. That she's, uh, she's not on the chopping block. I think Twila knew that the five younger girls--and we had said that if we had gone to Tribal Council the first, uh, challenge that we would have voted for her. | ” |
Twila |
“ | If it comes down to alliance-wise and stuff, it's Ami and me and Scout and Leann. The only one we have to worry about is, uh, Dolly. Dolly's going to be the…she's the pivot person in the middle. I think she's in, but you never know. | ” |
At Lopevi, the men agree they need to try and win their first challenge. They also start to make more use of the spiritual stone, and Rory believes there is magic on Vanuatu, since it was clear weather all day, and then it got rainy again after they put the spiritual stone back on the pole.
Rory |
“ | The spirit stone, is, of course, the, uh, idol that we won on our first welcome to the island, and it's supposed to bring good luck to the bearer, but quite frankly, it has not worked for us. We haven't won immunity yet. | ” |
Chad |
“ | The stone is important for us. It started off, uh, as a stone at the ceremony. We just brought it with us to set up our camp, but then we started sort of neglecting it, and things weren't going our way, so, um, we started to give it a bit more respect. | ” |
The tribes show up for their second Immunity Challenge. With Yasur having one extra member, Dolly sits out of the challenge. Scout and Sarge are selected as the eyes. Sarge is quick to give J.P. and Travis military commands while Scout just tells them to go straight and turn around before they reach the puzzle pieces. Both tribes each get their first pieces and go back to gather more, with almost everyone bumping into each other. Yasur gains an advantage with 5 pairs compared to Lopevi's 2, but Lopevi advances to 8 pairs after coming back with more. As Brady brings back another pair for Lopevi, he bumps his shin onto the pair. As Yasur goes for another piece, they also hurt themselves by walking into it, and Lopevi is only 1 pair away as they bring their 11th. Yasur starts to catch up with pairs 9 and 10, but Lopevi soon comes back with their final pair and advance to the puzzle. Yasur brings their 11th pair, and Jeff tells Scout she missed one in the water, so they go get it. They are quick ot catch up with Lopevi as both tribes complete their first puzzle seconds apart. Both tribes advance to puzzle 2, where Loopevi gets their lead back as they quickly finish and advance to the final puzzle. Lopevi finishes the final puzzle while Yasur is still on pussle 2, giving them the win, sending Yasur to their first Tribal Council.
Day 6[]
At Yasur, Scout consoles Eliza as she is sad to have to vote someone off. Julie asks Dolly what the verdict is, and she says it is Eliza. Dolly also tells Julie she is not voting with anyone else, and voting Eliza because she is not sure who else to vote for, thinking they need Twila for her hard work.
Julie |
“ | Originally, we had Dolly secure, but I think, being as sweet as Dolly is, you know, she, uh, you know, kind of switched back and felt guilty. I don't think she's looking out for her best interests. I think she's looking out for everybody's interests, and it's just not possible in this game. | ” |
Julie throws Leann as a suggestion for not being as much of a hard worker as Twila. Dolly admits she hates being in the middle, but feels more loyal to the younger girls. Dolly talks to Ami about how herself, Julie, Mia, and Lisa are saying Leann for the vote. She also talks to Scout about voting Leann or Eliza, and Scout is on board with voting Eliza because she finds her to be irritating. Dolly mentions Mia and Julie and saying to vote Leann and get it over with.
Dolly |
“ | Yeah, my head is completely spinning, and I'm uh, I'm afraid, um, at this point, because I don't want to…I don't want to make the wrong choice. You know, it's…I'm already…I've got myself in a jam. It's a cluster…cluster you-know-what. | ” |
Scout |
“ | Dolly told me that she was definitely going to vote for Leann. (lisping) I nearly dropped my teeth. That just…(mimics explosion and slaps herself) what? | ” |
Ami and Eliza ask Leann about who she plans on voting for, but she is unsure. and Ami tells them Dolly said "We'll vote Leann now and save Eliza for later." After Ami says Dolly, Mia, and Julie are running the whole thing, and the 3 of them talk about voting Dolly, since she is playing both sides hardcore.
Eliza |
“ | I don't know what to base my vote on. I don't know whether I should vote for Leann, stick with my original alliance, and, you know, hope that they carry me through, or I should vote off the person who makes me really nervous, who I don't completely trust. Out of all those five girls in that alliance that we have, I trust Dolly the least. I think there is a possibility that she could vote me off. That she would turn on me. I just don't want the other four girls in that alliance to go blindsided. But then again, if I bering it up to them and I tell them, look, I'm thinking of voting out Dolly, they're going to say, we better just vote you out. So I don't know what the heck to do | ” |
Jeff welcomes Yasur to their first Tribal Council. he asks Scout if she feels like she could have done better the challenge, and she feels like she blew it. Jeff asks Eliza about workload, and she said everyone except Twila has their on and off days. Twila said she got help from Leann, Scout, and Ami while the rest worked hard in their areas. Leann said she slept better with the blankets they won, and says she gets a little quiet when she is tired or hungry. Jeff tells Leann withdrawing may work against her, and she knows she may be in danger. Dolly admits she is getting along too well with everyone, and it put her in the middle. Jeff calls them to vote, with Eliza up first. Julie and Mia cast their votes against Leann, but ultimately, Dolly was voted out over Leann in a 5-4 vote.
Challenges[]
Challenge: By the Numbers
One at a time, each tribe member must maneuver past the other players standing on a balance beam and get to the finishing platform. If one of them falls or touches more than one other player at once, they must start over. First tribe to get all eight members on the platform wins.

Additional Stipulation: If Lopevi wins, they would get fire in the form of flint.
Winner: Yasur
Challenge: Four On The Floor
One caller from each tribe must guide three groups of blindfolded tribemates (each tied together, in two pairs and one group of three) to retrieve twelve pairs of puzzle pieces on land and in the water, then work to assemble three puzzles on a set of scaffolding. The first to assemble the puzzles and climb the scaffolding wins.
Additional Stipulation: If Lopevi wins, they would get flint.

Julie |
“ | (voting against Leann) My vote is for Leann, because Dolly's pretty much running the show, but I do like her. | ” |
Mia |
“ | (voting against Leann) Leann, you seem like a great girl, just didn't have time to get to know you. And, um, it's purely so the five "young'uns", as you call us, can stick together and get through this. Sorry. | ” |
Final Words[]
Dolly |
“ | First of all, I have to say, phew, because this game is-is too much for me, I wasn't cut out for this. And I'm just a simple farm girl. I-I can't plot, plan, and scheme. And I'm not too good at reading people. I just kind of live in my own little world. And I'm way too simple. And I…I just belong on the farm. | ” |
