Ángel Cristo García, better known as Ángel Cristo Jr., is a contestant from Supervivientes 2024.

A semi-regular Telecinco personality, having appeared on chat show ¡De viernes!, Ángel hit tabloid headlines after a public falling-out with famous mother Bárbara Rey over his gambling addiction. Ángel's brash personality provided much of the early controversy on the show, refusing to take part in the first challenge and attracting many of the first votes to go out; yet his suffering from ankylosing spondylitis also put the rare condition in the spotlight and helped raise awareness.

Having started out being considered to be hot-headed and unforgiving of his mother, fan perception of Ángel improved over the course of the series as he softened and became more open, getting married on the island and even being tipped to win. However, his long-running feud with Aurah Ruiz took up much of the middle period of the series. Producers eventually removed Ángel from the island after he overstepped the boundaries of the island where contestants are allowed to be. While Ángel awaited his punishment, his final outburst at Aurah was perceived as sexist, and fans who were more undecided in their feud quickly sided against him.

Supervivientes[]

Ángel arrived on the island as a celebrity only really from his well-publicised familial disagreements, and the harsh reputation he had gained when these hit the headlines was something he was only too happy to keep up. Ángel refused to take part in the first challenge, due to ankylosing spondylitis affecting his back. While host Carlos Sobera reminded him that he knew what he signed up for, and that repeatedly sitting out challenges would threaten his place on the show, Ángel decided to sit the challenge out.[2]

Ángel also caused controversy by refusing to read a letter from home from his mother, saying "I don't need to hear any letters from my mother; I have nothing to hear from her." Sobera read the letter to viewers to fill them in - that she was willing to pay his fine for his gambling addiction as thanks for keeping her out of his situation. Ángel retorted, saying "That cannot be a gift, and I don't know why you accommodate a child abuser on this programme,"[3] stunning both Carlos and viewers, but giving other Telecinco chat shows, such as Vamos a ver especially, plenty of juicy gossip, in which many were critical of Ángel appearing to only go on the show to trash talk his mother.[4]

Ángel quickly became an enemy of Carmen Borrego, and their tension became known throughout the galas before she was forced to leave the game.[5] After this, Ángel calmed down considerably, and even got married on the show, offering all contestants a welcome break from the game.

However, Ángel's game unravelled after his marriage, and his new disagreements with Aurah Ruiz provided much of the drama of the middle of the show. Their seemingly endless rows made up much of the next few episodes, and an attempt to put an end to their disagreements on the Bridge of Concord failed greatly. Not long after, Ángel disappeared from the island for three hours, with producers having to send out the Honduran Navy as a search party. After returning, Ángel was suspended and separated from the rest of the cast at the Oracle, with whom he was given the opportunity to talk, mediated by Carlos Sobera. Despite Aurah being considered to have gone low in attacking his estranged relationship with his young son, Ángel's response that "trampling over people" was "the only thing you women know how to do" was perceived by fans and the other contestants to be extremely sexist. Fans who had previously supported Ángel or had been ambivalent towards the pair's disputes sided against Ángel, and he was removed from the game by producers.[6]

Post-Supervivientes[]

Ángel was invited back to the show on the Sunday night edition Conexión Honduras, where he said that when he left the boundaries, he just wanted to keep walking, until he couldn't find his way back. He accepted that he put his life and that of others at risk, and when asked by Sandra Barneda, said that he left to take a private moment away from the game.[7]
